Every 3rd year, the theme of ‘Preaching’ is the focus of the QSR Annual Theology Conference. When this happens, both the Mumford Memorial Lectureship Fund of Eglinton St. George’s United Church in Toronto, and the Hilliker Preaching Lectureship Fund of Chalmers United Church in Kingston, give strong financial support to the Conference. These particular Funds were established to honour the engaging preaching ministries of the Rev. Dr. Robert Mumford and the Rev. Dr. C. Wayne Hilliker. Generous gifts, such as these ones, are gratefully received. These gifts serve to assist the cost involved in bringing widely respected preachers and workshop leaders to the Conference. 121st Queen’s Theology Annual Conference How I’ve Changed My Mind About Preaching Queen’s School of Religion October 21st-23rd, 2013 Sponsored by: The Queen’s Theology Alumni/ae Association The Buttars Fund Mumford Memorial Lectureship Fund Hilliker Preaching Lectureship Fund Speakers Workshops The Rev. Dr. Kate Crawford Workshops The Rev. Dr. Kate Crawford is an ordained United Church minister, serving at First-St. Andrew’s United Church in London, Ontario. With her doctoral work in Medieval England, and most of her ministry in Atlantic Canada, she brings a diversity of context to the rich and rewarding task of preaching within the community of faith. In three lectures, she will invite us to ponder the fullness of our own gifts for proclamation (‘Hello In There!’); the complexity of the world in which we dare to speak (Casting About); and bring a medieval mystic’s wisdom into our conversation (Love Was His Meaning). A. Challenges of Preaching Today: A Conversation with Orville James C. Listeners of sermons come in all shapes, sizes and stages of development. Developmental psychology and ‘Stages of Faith’ theory suggest that people hear and interpret in different ways. During research at Princeton Seminary, Orville tested deductive, inductive and narrative homiletical structures to see what type of sermon best communicated with various faith stages. Orville James serves at Wellington Square United Church in Burlington, ON, a congregation striving to proclaim and serve in Jesus’ name. Nancy Wilson has held the role of worship leader in multi-point pastoral charges (PEI & Ontario) and a Presbytery position focused on Mission, Evangelism and Church Development (Winnipeg, MB). These roles have given her the opportunity to experience preaching as both the deliverer of the message and the receiver of the good news. Come and join the conversation as we share observations and insights on preaching methods of the past and opportunities to speak to a new generation of church-goers. Rev. Dr. Pamela M. S. Holmes B. D. Challenges of Preaching Today: A Conversation with Brian Cornelius Rev. Dr. Pamela Holmes has been teaching at the School of Religion since 2003 in the areas of spirituality, theology and practice of ministry. She also directs the Field Education program and coordinates the Flora Jane Baker Clergy Sabbatical Fellowship. An ordained Pentecostal pastor, she was involved in congregational ministry and church planting. Her presentation will focus upon her research in the intersection of feminist critical theory and Canadian Pentecostal ministering women. Challenges of Preaching Today: A Conversation with Prof. Bill Morrow I have been preaching professionally for 35 years. Maturing as an expository preacher has meant learning that conflict negotiation is the essence of the task—not only in terms of exegesis and application but with my personal responses to the text. At the same time, a basic motivation of biblical writings is to surprise their readers and challenge their constructions of reality. How to negotiate the conflicts so one can still be surprised by scripture? Challenges of Preaching Today: A Conversation with Nancy Wilson After 25 years in congregational ministry with a relatively traditional approach to preaching, Brian is reconsidering and reworking his preaching style. In recent sabbatical studies and travels, Brian has explored the techniques of "narrative therapy" and its potential impact on the preaching experience as well as its impact on using Biblical texts in preaching. E. Challenges of Preaching Today: A Conversation with Larry Doyle Mix Spiritual nudges, Transformational themes, Progressive theology, Biblical focus, Expository form, Evangelical style, Prophetic passion, and Media-rich expression. Press blend and preach. Larry Doyle (Musician. Minister. Mystic?) is in ministry at Faith United in Courtice, ON, and is currently pursuing a D.Min in Spirituality.
