The Transitive Verb Patterns
(New Patterns)
A transitive verb requires one or more objects; something is done to
something else. For example, when writing, “I complete the grammar
packet,” the verb complete is transitive because it has a direct object, a
noun or pronoun that receives the action of the verb. One cannot just
complete; one must complete something (in this case, the grammar packet).

their assignments.
Example:
The dog bit me on the leg.
The dog is the subject of the sentence. Bit me on the leg is the
predicate. Bit is the verb. Me is the direct object (the object of the
action of the verb).
DIRECTIONS: For each of the following sentences (1) divide the sentence into subject and
predicate, (2) circle the verb, (3) bracket the direct object (4) label the direct object DO.

An indirect object is the part of a sentence most typically associated with
the goal or recipient role, representing to whom or what the action (verb)
was carried out upon.
Example:

My girlfriend is the subject. Gave me a new watch is the predicate. Gave
is the verb. A cobra is the direct object. Me is the indirect object.
DIRECTIONS: For each of the following sentences (1) divide the sentence into subject and
