It is an artificial threshold designed to prevent false positives, below which the calibration won't report a value. Limit of Detection (LOD) is the smallest concentration which can be detected. In this document LOD is specified for various matrices in three sigma 99.7% confidence level and 180 second analysis time per phase (dual phase calibration). Individual elemental LOD's improve as a function of the square root of the analysis time. Detection limits are specified for real samples in close to ideal conditions where only few elements are present in a sample. For samples which contain significant amount of other overlapping elements, LOD for specific element can be significantly higher than reported. Limit of Detection is dependent on several factors, such as: Matrix Interferences, Overlapping elements, Level of statistical confidence and Testing time.
