HAZEL CREEK CEMETERY ADAIR COUNTY, MISSOURI This cemetery brought to you by Twyla Located on west side of BB, northwest of Kirksville about three miles. There is an active Church there. The old part of the cemetery is north and behind the Church, the new part lies south of the Church. Rows start on west side of cemetery, in the NW corner. Information was furnished by Mrs. Thomas May of Kirksville, copying of stones by Elizabeth Laughlin and Bess Mercer; family information, additions, and corrections by Mrs. Cleve (Juanity) Adams, Route #2, Kirksville. History of Hazel Creek Union Church and Cemetery A quit claim deed was made on the 25th day of January 1895 AD by and between William F. Link and Mary E. Link, his wife, of Adair Co., MO for the public for Church site and grave year purposes for the sum of one dollar. Commencing at the Southwest corner of the Northwest 1/4 of the Northeast 1/4 of the Southwest 1/4 of the Section No. 36 in Township No. 64 of Range No. 16 West and running thence East 24 rods, thence North 13 1/3 rods, thence West 24 rods, and thence South 13 1/3 rods to the place of beginning. Containing in said tract 2 acres ore or less. This deed is given and accepted with the understanding that there shall be erected on said premises a building to be used as a Union Church. A Church was built that year with Peter Voelker as Head Carpenter. It faced the South, but in later years, was turned around and now faces the East. While men were clearing the land for the cemetery, Samuel Scott made the remark that he’d be the first one buried there and, sure enough, he was. On August 14, 1896 he died. Cause of death was an overdose of drugs given by a drunken doctor. Samuel had typhoid fever. On December 16, 1896, a meeting was called and C. G. Young was elected to serve as Chairman and W. E. Seirts as Secretary. Trustees elected were Peter Vollker and Jacob Newcomer. They, in turn, appointed D. C. Scott as the third Trustee. The three Churches represented were Presbyterian, Methodist, and Free Will Baptist. Charter members were William Dictmairs, Charley Young, Jacob Sevits, Dan Sevits, Frank Sevits, William Sevits, Charles Sevits, Charles Stokesberry, George Gardner, Charles Newcomer, Richard Byrd, Aus Filkins, Frank Miller, G. W. Felker, D. C. Scott, Jacob Newcomer, Sherod Law, William Law, Fred Scott, and Peter Vollker. In 1950, 8 acres and the house on it 1/4 miles from the Church were purchased from Hershel Sevits to be used as a parsonage. This land is South of the Church. In 1968, members of the Church bought a new unfurnished house trailer and attached it to the back of the Church to be used as classrooms for Sunday School, etc. A quit claim deed was made on the 5th day of September 1968 by Cyrus Seirts and wife, Sylvia Seirts, to the Hazel Creek Union Church for 2 acres of land for cemetery ground that joins the Church on the South. The first grave in the new part was that of Douglas Paul Filkins. He died May 28, 1971. He accidentally shot himself. The upkeep of the cemetery is by donations only. It is still a very active Church and Sunday School with a full-time pastor. The seats and bible stand that Peter Vollker made in 1896 are still in use. Information from Mrs. Juanita Sevits Adams.
