Israel Celebrates Its 25th Birthday
Seq
The shaded part of the map
above shows the territory
that Israel occupied as a
result of her wars with the
Arab nations.
All unmarried girls of the age of 18
or older must serve in the armed
forces. The Arab-Israeli conflict
is an important part of everyday
.life in Israel.
The Bedouins are shepherds. Many live today much like t heir ancestors
did back in the days of the Bible. They live in the desert raising, sheep,
camels and goats.
I t has been said that the Israelis built their
country with a plow in one hand and a gun
in the other.
Israel declared itself an independent nation
in 1948, 25 years ago. Its founding was the
result of a long struggle for members of what
was called the "Zionist Movement." Zionists
wanted to set up a national homeland for the
Jews.
Israel was created out of the country that
had been called Palestine. The Arab nations
did not like this. They felt that Palestine was
Arab land.
'
The Israelis have had to fight three wars
'in order to save their country from Arab attack. The Arab-Israeli conflict is a part of
everyday life. All men over the age of 18 must
serve in the armed forces. The country must
be able to defend itself at a moments notice.
The progress that the Israelis have made
has been remarkable. The problems of han- ,
dling- many immigrants with different backgrounds is a big one. The Jewish population
of Israel has grown from 760,000 in 1948 to
2,384,000 in 1968.
Today, Arabs account for about 10 per cent
'Of the Israeli population. Most of them are
farmers. They have equal rights with Jews,
but they cannot serve in the armed forces.
There are some Arabs who are members of
the Israeli parliament.'
When the State of Israel was founded in
1948, it was an agricultural, underdeveloped
country where most of the manufactured
products were made for local sale. Today, the
country has many new factories that produce
goods for export to other countries.
The Israelis have made great progress in
turning dry desert land into cropland. By
using advanced methods of farming, they
have tripled the amount of cropland.
.
Jews from all over the world have contnbuted money to help make many of these improvements possible.
According to Prime Minister Golda Meir,
the country has been concerned with four
main efforts: to defend itself and survive as
a nation; to become a homeland for Jews
from all over the world; to develop a society
that preserves the ancient Jewish values; and
to develop resources to give the people a
better quality of life.
Israel has come a long way in 25 years. It
is hoped that the future will bring peace to
the troubled area.
