The drivers
Kamui Kobayashi is the whippersnapper on the
BMW Sauber F1 Team. Coming from the TOYOTA
talent factory, the Japanese native has only driven two Formula 1 races – but his performance
was so convincing that Peter Sauber hired him on
the spot. Pedro de la Rosa joined Formula 1 in
1998. He mainly filled the role of test pilot and
has driven in nine F1 races over seven years. The
Spaniard is a seasoned pilot and wise counterpart
to the young Kobayashi.

owner in order to preserve his life
work – and thus the Hinwil facility.
With the C29, he presented a racing
machine this year that may harbour
additional potential in terms of
sponsor area but represents absolutely outstanding technology. The
uncertainties of the transition never affected development of the
new vehicle. Preparations for the
new season proceeded according
to plan, the return to the Ferrari
motors and gearboxes was practically seamless thanks to earlier
years. The result is a sleek, long

The opportunities
A starting position for the BMW Sauber F1
Team was only confirmed in December 2009.
Before Peter Sauber buys back the racing team,
BMW has the thankless task of giving notice to
some of the employees. The financial future of
the team can only be assured on a smaller basis.
Not the technology but marketing is the greatest challenge. How can leading sponsors be
found in the short term? What about the existing partnerships? Many smaller sponsors and
official suppliers stayed on board, continuity is
assured.
The new FIA rules affect the appearance of the
race cars. Probably the most important point is
that refuelling during the race isn’t allowed
anymore. This doubles the fuel tank volume and
affects the centre of gravity, driving characteristics and vehicle length. The front wheels become narrower and demand a shift in weight
towards the rear. The nose of the C29 is noticeably high; the long undercut where the chassis
meets the underbody serves to optimise airflow
to the double diffuser and therefore the downforce.
The BMW Sauber F1 Team does not want to put
pressure on itself with (excessively) high goals, and
is working towards holding sixth place in the constructors classification. The team with the proven
mix of an experienced pilot (Pedro de la Rosa) and
a young whippersnapper (Kamui Kobayashi) respects the long season with 19 grand prix races.
Short pit stops thanks to speedy Sauber mechanics
are considered a plus. A factor that becomes even

When the Formula 1 models for
the new season are unveiled and
the race cars stand gleaming in the
spotlight, admiring comments can
be heard about the technology,
engineering and the wind tunnel
– and perhaps a few less flattering
remarks about the new rules or diverging association interests. The
fact that each and every race car is
a masterpiece of material technology, vehicle construction, precision engineering and plastics technology hardly seems worth
mentioning. Yet it takes more than
two hundred highly trained specialists to implement what, from
the paper to the initial test, hasn't
driven as much as a meter: The
brand new C29 of the BMW Sauber
F1 Team!
A “real” factory
Striding through the wide, immaculate halls of
the Hinwil company and casting surreptitious
glances through the door windows into various
work rooms always seems a bit mysterious. Workers are moulding, bonding, sanding, screwing,
milling, measuring, re-measuring, coating and
assembling for all they are worth. The entire
building was strictly designed for short paths and
optimised workflows.
The production facility concept
The ground floor is home to the lorry hall. Next
to that is space for large production equipment
such as the portal milling machine. Mechanical
fabrication and the autoclaves are also found
here. The EDM machines, quality control and
storehouse are located on the first upper floor.

On the second upper floor, the centre section is
designed as an atrium which is open to the
third upper floor. This is where the race cars are
maintained. The second upper floor is also
home to the carbon fibre department, vehicle
construction, the hydraulics section and rapid
prototyping. Administration, the engineering
office and the electronics department are
above that.

Real funny
Wind tunnel and supercomputer
65 metres long, 50 metres wide and 17 metres
tall, the building that holds the wind tunnel is
located right next to the new building. This is
where the entire aerodynamics department is
found. The supercomputer “Albert 3”, mainly
used for aerodynamics analyses, is closely linked
to the wind tunnel.
