Dear Family,
In this topic, one of the concepts your student will be learning about is how
to change a mixed number to an improper fraction and an improper fraction
to a mixed number. A mixed number has a whole-number part and a fractional
has a numerator that is greater than or
part, like 21
3 . An improper fraction
11
equal to the denominator, like 4 .
Change 21
3 to an
improper fraction.
Change 11
4 to a
mixed number.
1
21
3=2+ 3
11
4
1
=6
3+3
=7
3
7
So, 21
3 = 3.
4 3
=4
4+4+4
=1+1+3
4
= 23
4
3
So, 11
4 = 24 .
To strengthen these skills, you can play the following game.
Fraction Frenzy
Materials: 1 number cube (labeled 1–6)
Step 1 Each player creates either a mixed number or an improper
fraction by tossing the number cube three times. For example,
if 1, 5, and 6 are tossed, 1 56 or 15
6 can be represented.
Step 2 Change the mixed numbers to improper fractions and the
improper fractions to mixed numbers. The player who gets a correct
answer first scores one point.
