Free time
What do British teenagers do in their free time?
• British teenagers often stay at home in their free time. And what do they do?
They watch TV, play computer games and surf the Internet. A survey says that they
spend 20% of every day in front of televisions, games consoles and computers.
• After-school clubs are also popular. Most secondary schools in the
UK have after-school clubs. The activities include dance, drama, music,
computing, cooking and sport. There are also some unusual activities, for
example, tai chi, yoga and photography. The clubs are usually free.
• Sport is a popular free-time activity. Swimming is the favourite free-time
sport for girls and the top sports for boys are football and skateboarding.
• At weekends, young teenagers sometimes go to stay at a friend’s house.
This is called a sleepover and it’s particularly popular with girls.
On weekdays, I usually meet my friends after
school and we go skateboarding. I go to Kids’
Cookery Club once a week after school. A chef comes
to the school and we learn to cook. I really enjoy it!
We make pizzas, lasagne, biscuits and other things.
The lessons are free but we pay £1 every week for the
ingredients. After the lesson, we eat the food, so I have
my dinner at school on Mondays! That’s really cool!

I don’t go out very often in the week but I go
to CC4G (Computer Club For Girls) after school
on Wednesdays. I like the club because it’s really
interesting and we do great things. At weekends, I
often have a sleepover. My best friend, Amy, comes
to stay at my house or I go to her house for the
night. We usually watch Smallville and Lost on TV
and we sometimes watch a DVD. When we go to
bed, we always talk for hours. It’s brilliant!
