December 2016 - Harrisonburg Rockingham Free Clinic

December Newsletter
A Message from the
Executive Director
Yesterday, I took my turn ringing the
bell at a local business for Salvation
Army donations. Each year while
doing this, I’m inspired by the
generosity of people in our
community. This same spirit of
generosity is demonstrated by Dr.
Richard and Elaine Stoltzfus who serve
one day a week at the Free Clinic. They
moved to Harrisonburg five years ago,
after Dr. Stoltzfus retired from a
medical practice in rural Kentucky.
Today, Dr. Stoltzfus provides
physician services for patients and
Elaine provides patient health
education during one-on-one
appointments. The Stoltzfus’ health
mission began
serving at a
clinic and
hospital in rural
Kentucky and
continues today
serving at the
Free Clinic.
“Volunteering at
the Free Clinic
has been a
blessing to us in many ways," Dr.
Stoltzfus says. "We particularly
appreciate being able to use our
knowledge and experience in helping
people improve their health. Also, it’s
good to work alongside such a friendly
group of staff and fellow volunteers.”
The Stoltzfus Family is a great
example of the Free Clinic tradition of
“Compassionate Care. Extraordinary
People.” that has developed over the
past 25 years. This message is
demonstrated everyday as strong
“family” relationships develop among
patients, volunteers and staff. Yes, we
promote better health for patients but
we also strive for better health on
behalf of everyone who calls
Harrisonburg and Rockingham County
“home.”
As the year draws to a close please
include the Free Clinic in your yearend giving. Your gift provides
important health care that treats the
whole person and provides hope for
the New Year.
Blessings,
Keith Gnagey

Compassionate Care
A Volunteer Mission Moment
Lab volunteer Jordy Wilkinson of Hinton noticed that one of her Home Instead
clients had a large quantity of unused yarn. “I asked her if I could make scarves
from the yarn and she said that would be fine,” said Jordy.
As a child, Jordy learned to knit and crochet from her
grandmother. A lifetime of experience and nimble
phlebotomist’s fingers allowed her to produce two scarves
in a week. She donated a dozen scarves to Home Instead
and the Free Clinic.
“I volunteer at the Free Clinic because I’m doing something
helpful,” she said. “I also see old friends from my days as a
hospital IV therapist and make new friends.”
Jordy has her sights set on another helpful project. She’s
planning to create an afghan incorporating the colors of the new Free Clinic
logo. The afghan will be offered as a raffle prize with the proceeds going to
support “Bernie’s Purse,” a fund to assist patients with transportation costs and
membership and medicine co-pays.
