Arts Strategy Update: The arts strategy sub-committee has met several times. The following points were discussed: The aim of the strategy is to build on what is currently here and to engage with the community and enable strengthening of existing bonds. The strategy will attract visitors from Hobart and the broader community to come to New Norfolk with a view to them also visiting shops while here, boosting the economy of the town. New Norfolk Business Alliance is a Special Committee of Derwent Valley Council When bedded down the strategy may act as a trigger for people to move to the area, capitalising on the ‘quirky’ nature of the town and surrounds. May also lead to new businesses e.g. arts supply, opening in the town. It is a positive strategy aimed at strengthening existing bonds, not competing for resources. Strategy revolves around creating a calendar of monthly events, to be published in advance. In this instance the term ‘art’ is used in the broadest sense and may include performance, creative arts, installations and even produce and value added products local produced. Start small and slowly build up, all events must be of a high quality. Activities must be well resourced. Next steps: Subcommittee will develop ideas further Subcommittee will develop indicative costings to allow the committee to budget for activities. Christmas promotion expenses: Jess ensured that Cr Triffett was reimbursed $1093.24 for expenses previously agreed to by the NNBA. Ray advised that the total cost of the Christmas promotion was $2699, this included print advertising in the Gazette, Valley Vouchers (Derwent Dollars) prizes, the cost of the creation of the ad etc. Discussion took place regarding the process for payment and incurring expenses. The motion was put that: The New Norfolk Business Alliance pay the invoices for the above mentioned activities to a total of $2699 (excluding the $1093.24 already reimbursed to Cr Triffett) and that the Regional Development Officer be requested to take the steps necessary to make payments. Moved: Roz Seconded: Tammy Carried. Review of Business Levy: Jess advised that a recommendation was being put to the next Council Meeting regarding the review of the Business Levy, if approved the levy would be reviewed pursuant to the Local Government Act 1993. The NNBA will be kept informed of the progress of the review should the Council approve it. Tammy submitted comment directly to DST as discussed at the previous meeting. Handouts for businesses: Carried over until next meeting, Nicola was looking at this. Business Information Forums: Carried over until next meeting, Jess was looking at this. Television Advertising: Thanks to James and Ray for sourcing quotes for this. There was a lengthy discussion regarding the information contained in the quotes. The Committee decided that MG Marketing (Ian McInerny) provided the best value for money in terms of spread of advertising for cost. The motion was put that: After seeking three quotes for the provision of television advertising, the committee of the New Norfolk Business Alliance has appointed MG Marketing to provide television advertising until 30 th June 2018. This does not prevent the committee (or members of the committee through the committee) reviewing this appointment in the intervening period. Initial advertising will be undertaken in March and May with further advertising blocks to be subject of a further decision of the committee. It was noted that the committee may wish to review the advertisement at some point prior to the 30 th June 2018, if this were to occur the committee will seek 3 quotes for the creation and airing of a new advertisement. Moved: Tammy Seconded: Roz Carried. In order for the installation to go ahead, power outlets are to be installed at a cost of approximately $1,600 to Council. After discussion the motion was put that: The NNBA provide funding of up to $1,600 to support the Council in the installation of power outlets on businesses in New Norfolk, aiding in the implementation of the Safer Streets grant. Moved: Tammy Seconded: David – Carried. Town Entrances: Ray bought the committee’s attention to concerns regarding the town entrances. In discussion it was recognised that this has been a point of discussion within the Council and in other forums. The NNBA committee indicated that they would like to be included in this, and that the committee would continue to monitor the situation.
