Student Author Celebration!
By Karen Foos, Herman Avenue Elementary School
Students work hard as writers all year long with teachers
asking them to edit and revise and sometimes have to
write and rewrite several times to get it just right. They
work on building creative thoughts into detailed writing
pieces. This comes easy to some students, but for others,
writing is a difficult task. In Ms. Foos' Second Grade
class at Herman Avenue Elementary, all their efforts are
proven to be worth it at their end of the year Student
Author Celebration. Each student is allowed to invite one
guest to come visit and students enjoy sharing their
writing pieces that they have created during the year with
their guests. One of the writing pieces was the studentcreated computer slideshow of their animal research
projects. Students got to go to the computer lab to share
their slideshow and share with their guest how they
created it. Our guests this year included parents,
grandparents, siblings, and friends from other
classrooms.
To add to our celebration, students also brought in
a piece of fruit (or container of fruit) so that we could
make a Friendship Fruit Salad. Students enjoyed

AJHS Students “Keep in Touch”
by Sarah Parisi, Home & Careers Teacher
Just when you thought adolescents were
completely egocentric, they show you that,
deep inside, there is a tremendous
appreciation for their elders. It takes a little
teaching and training, though.
Ms. Mary Armstrong, older adult of Cazenovia,
NY, wrote in the Post Standard: “What is going
on? Are our younger folks preoccupied with
Seventh
themselves, too busy making a living or living
Grade
beyond their means, keeping up with their
students in
Home and
peers, chasing all the latest technological
Career Skills
gadgets, etc? Have they forgotten the
class made
importance of their elders…?” She goes on to
handsewn
teddy bears
say that older people need “attention,
to send off to affections and interactions with younger
the “Seniors”
people.”
in their lives.
It was in this spirit that students in 7th grade
Home and Career Skills class learned about the various
developmental stages of life, how to accurately write out a
note card and envelope, and how to hand-sew a gift. While
kids’ communication devices seem wired to the their hands, it
would seem it’s so easy to keep in touch with their elders. But
some are just not trained in the way to go about this, leaving
their loved ones a little hurt and perhaps lonely for
appreciation and connection. Some say the art of letter writing
is from a bygone era, but in order to connect with people of
importance, this type of texting still needs to be taught.
Ethan Hickman, 7th grade, writes a heartfelt note to his Grandma.

Crepes in the
Classroom
The third graders in Mrs. Siddall’s
class at Herman Avenue have been
learning French all year. They have
not only learned the language, but
they also conducted research on the
culture of France, including the
cuisine.
On June 10, Nick Pennella, father of
third grader Carly, visited the class to
teach them about French cooking and
served them strawberry crepes. Mr.
Pennella is a chef at the Springside
Inn, and he shared his education,
experience, and knowledge about his
profession with the students. They not
only were treated to his amazing
crepes, but they learned about a very
creative and exciting profession that
involves a lot of reading and math, as
well as science. As a result of his
presentation, many third graders are
now considering the culinary arts as a
career! Merci, Monsieur Pennella!

Diaper Drive Donation!
Mrs. LaFrance's 7th grade homeroom won the
Diaper Drive Contest! They brought in the
most diapers to help the Auburn Rescue
Mission! In addition to the diapers, The AJHS
SGO raised almost $100 through a hat day and
name the courtyard duck contest that was
donated to the Rescue Mission to purchase
more diapers. In return the Rescue Mission gave
everyone a “I Made a Difference” T-shirt.

Auburn Community Baseball
While professional baseball in Auburn, NY dates back to the late 1870s, the current incarnation of the team traces its roots
back to 1957 and the formation of Auburn Community Owned Non-Profit Baseball Association Inc. Auburn Community
Baseball, as the company is commonly known, began operating the Auburn Yankees of the New York-Penn League in 1958.
The team was renamed Doubledays in 1996 in honor of Civil War general Abner Doubleday, who spent his childhood
in Auburn.
Congratulations Luann Phillips!
Luann Phillips, a rising junior at
Auburn High School, was
recently presented with the
President’s Gold Volunteer
Service Award for performing
over 100 hours of community
service last year. She is a
former Genesee student who
has never stopped giving back
to her elementary school, as
well as volunteering for her
community. She was presented
with a plaque and signed letter
