Modern Standard Arabic is the official written language of the Arabic speaking world. It also doubles
up as a universal spoken language to enable peoples of different Arab nations and regional dialects to
easily communicate. As the official written form, it usually follows strict rules of grammar with special
case endings (as in Latin), but as a spoken language these endings can be, and often are, left out,
which is good news for the initial learner.
The earworms approach here has been to record the language as it might be spoken in the simplest
possible, most useful way. The phonetic text we have included follows (as far as is possible) the
original Arabic intonation heard in the recordings. An interesting method for internalising the Arabic
alphabet has been treated separately and is available on the earworms website.
