Introduction
This document describes the installation and use of the DynaVox EyeMax for eye tracking.
The EyeMax enables a user to make selections by fixing his or her gaze at specific objects on
the device screen. Once the EyeMax is properly connected and calibrated, conversation,
environmental control, and even email and the Internet are only a blink (or gaze) away.
Be sure to read through the step-by-step instructions in this document to learn the proper
installation methods and ways to customize the software to best suit the needs and
capabilities of the device user.

Chapter 1: Introduction
SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
In order to use the EyeMax properly, you must have the following:
•
DynaVox speech generating device. The EyeMax connects to two different models of
speech generating device:
•
DynaVox Maestro
•
DynaVox Vmax+ Dual Core
NOTE
See the picture on the previous page for reference.
•
DynaVox Series 5 Software: No matter if you use a Maestro or a Vmax+, your speech
generating device must be running version 1.07.2 (or later) of the Series 5 Software.
•
Mounting system. The EyeMax System (EyeMax + speech generating device) is not a
hand-held system. It must be securely mounted for proper positioning.
ABOUT THIS USER’S GUIDE
This document contains descriptions of and instructions for performing the basic operations of
your EyeMax. Throughout the text, you will find the following kinds of comments:
NOTE
This document offers notes on making the most of your communication system. These notes are
designed to highlight features that can be used to make the device a better fit for an individual
user, or point out other important considerations.
CAUTION
You should always be sure to read the notes beside the caution symbol. These notes contain very
important information to help you use your DynaVox hardware safely, and to prevent device
damage and loss of information.
REFERENCE
Many of the topics in this document are explained in more detail in the Series 5 Searchable Help
that can be launched on your Maestro/Vmax (or the CD and/or DVD that came with your Maestro/
Vmax). The reference notations include a key word or phrase that can be used to quickly find the
topic in the Searchable Help.

Chapter 1: Introduction
EMERGENCY USE (INTENDED USE OF THIS PRODUCT)
The Maestro/Vmax and EyeMax are intended for everyday communication situations. They
should not be relied upon as a means of communicating emergency medical information. We
recommend having multiple ways to communicate information during a medical emergency.
CAUTION
The EyeMax emits infrared light, which may interfere with infrared-controlled devices. Do not use
the EyeMax in the same room with any infrared-controlled device if device failure could affect the
safety or health of the user.
PHYSICAL STRAINS
There are two types of strain that can occur from using any kind of eye tracking device: neck
strain and eye strain. This is true for using computer monitors as well. Recommendations for
alleviating such ‘monitor eye strain’ may be found by browsing to this Web site:
www.mayoclinic.com/health/eyestrain/WL00060.
If, at any time, you notice discomfort, pain, or fatigue in either your neck or your eyes, stop
using the EyeMax and rest until you feel well again.
The length of time that the EyeMax can be used before feeling strain or fatigue will vary from
person to person. You should listen to your body and rest when it tells you.
Trying out the EyeMax may initially be fatiguing to new users. This may be because they tend
to strain their eyes to reach and concentrate upon each target. A typical user will quickly grow
accustomed to the eye tracking process, and use of the system will soon become less
fatiguing.

Chapter 1: Introduction
LIGHT EXPOSURE
The EyeMax contains light-emitting diodes (LEDs) that emit light in the near-infrared spectra.
This type of infrared (IR) light occurs naturally in sunlight and also in light from incandescent
lamps.
Several national and international organizations provide guidelines for human exposure to
optical radiation, and recommend exposure limits for the eye and skin. The most prominent
are: the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH)1-2 in North
America, and the International Commission for Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP,
1997). In the European Union, there is an Optical Radiation Directive that employs the ICNIRP
exposure limits in the workplace. Other organizations recommend product-safety emission
limits (ANSI, 2005, 2000, 2007; CIE, 2002; CENELEC, 2002; IEC, 2007; CDRH, 1995).
Currently, there are two sets of product safety standards that apply to the use of lamps—
including solid-state lamps (LEDs) worldwide. These are:
•
The CIE Lamp Safety Standard: CIE Standard S009/E-2002, Photobiological Safety of
Lamps and Lamp Systems.
•
The EN 60825-1 Laser Product Safety Standard
The maximum level possible with the EyeMax in any setting never gets close to the emission
limits set by these standards. A person using the EyeMax during regular operation is exposed
to less than 0.1% of the accepted long-time exposure according to EN 60825-1/A1-A2. This
exposure is also well within the safety guidelines given in the book, 1996 TLVs and BEIs, by
the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists.

Chapter 2: Hardware Overview
PRODUCT CARE & HANDLING
To clean your Maestro/Vmax and EyeMax, first turn the Maestro/Vmax off and then wipe all
the hardware gently with a damp cloth or soft paper towel. You may dampen the towel with a
mild window cleaner to remove fingerprints, food particles, and dust.
Do not use tape or stickers on the Maestro/Vmax touch screen or on any of the plastic cases.
Additionally, do not cover the glass over the EyeMax camera or either of the infrared
transmitters. They are difficult to remove and may damage the device surfaces. Tape, stickers
and other sticky materials can damage the touch screen and interfere with the operation of the
devices.
Be sure to avoid getting any of your DynaVox devices wet. Never submerge them in water (for
example, in dishwater). If your devices accidentally get wet, shut them down immediately and
allow them to dry thoroughly. If after 24 hours you find that the devices seem to function
normally, there is probably no damage. If the devices fail to function or behave abnormally,
contact DynaVox Technical Support:
•
US and Canada - Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. (Eastern Standard
Time): 1-800-344-1778.
•
UK and Ireland - Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. until midnight: +44 (0) 1926 516250.

Installing/Replacing the Vmax Battery
When your Vmax is shipped, the battery is not installed. Before you can turn on your Vmax,
you must install and charge the battery.
NOTE
You may also follow the steps below if you need to replace the battery in your device with a new
battery from DynaVox Technologies. If the battery in your Vmax becomes unable to maintain
power after being charged, it could need to be replaced. You can order a replacement battery by
contacting DynaVox Customer Service/Sales Support.
To install (or replace) the battery in your Vmax:
1. If you are replacing a battery, turn the device off and, if necessary, disconnect the charger.
2. Lay your device face down on top of a soft cloth on a flat surface. You should be looking at
the support leg and the battery door on the back of the device.
3. Extend the support leg to uncover the battery door.
4. Using a flat-head screwdriver (or a coin), loosen the two screws that hold on the battery
door by turning them to the left (counter-clockwise). The screws cannot be removed
completely; when they are loose, they will spring up slightly from the battery door.

and attach the replacement battery door with the EyeMax.
After the battery door is in place, you can then make the necessary cable connections
between your EyeMax and your Vmax.
These instructions pick up where Installing/Replacing the Vmax Battery on page 13 left off.
To continue:
1. Place the EyeMax battery door on your Vmax and tighten the screws by turning them
clockwise (to the right). You should only have to turn them a quarter-turn or half-turn.
NOTE
After you replace the battery door, make a note of both your Vmax’s serial number, and the
EyeMax’s serial number. They are printed on the label on the battery door. Pull the Vmax+ Quick
Start guide out of the Vmax shipping box, and write the two serial numbers in the space provided
on the last page. This information will be handy if you ever need to contact DynaVox Technical
Support about your Vmax or your EyeMax. You will also need to write the Vmax serial number on
the registration card. Set the registration card aside. You can fill it out while the battery is charging.
2. If you plan to keep the EyeMax connected to your Vmax for an extended period, complete
this step. (If you plan to disconnect the EyeMax after a brief period, proceed to step 3.)
a. Use the supplied Allen wrench to loosen the black plastic “feet” that hold the support
leg in place on the back of the Vmax.
b. Remove the feet and set them aside.
c. Lift the support leg away from the Vmax and set it aside.
d. Place the supplied metal handle in the grooves that originally held the support leg.
e. Replace the black plastic “feet” to hold the handle in place.
f.
14
Unclasp the nylon handle on the bottom of the Vmax, and remove both halves from
the strap attachment points (once the EyeMax is installed, this handle is not needed).

Chapter 3: Installation & Setup
CHARGING THE BATTERIES
Each of the DynaVox devices (Maestro/Vmax and EyeMax) has an internal battery, and they
must all be charged. It can take up to 4 hours to completely charge the batteries. There are
three things to remember about these batteries:
•
They will both charge at the same time.
•
You cannot overcharge the batteries. You can leave the charger plugged in continuously,
and this will not harm the batteries in any way.
•
You can still use the EyeMax system to communicate while the batteries are charging.
When your Maestro/Vmax battery begins to run out of power, the low battery icon will appear
on the right side of the title bar on the touchscreen (refer to the picture below). If you see this
icon, you should plug in your device to conserve the remaining power, and you should
recharge the batteries as soon as possible. The icon will remain visible until the batteries are
recharged.

If the EyeMax battery begins to run out of power, the charging indicator LED on the left side of the
EyeMax will blink (see Left Side on page 7). You should recharge the batteries as soon as
possible.
If the batteries completely run out of power, your DynaVox devices will automatically shut
down. Any unsaved programming will be automatically saved before the devices shut down.
You will need to either charge the batteries or plug in the charger before you can turn the
devices on again.

Chapter 3: Installation & Setup
MOUNTING THE EYEMAX SYSTEM
The EyeMax System (Maestro/Vmax and EyeMax) must be mounted at the appropriate
distance from and angle to the user in order to work properly.
NOTE
If you are connecting your EyeMax to a Vmax, you should remove the support leg from the back of
the Vmax if you intend to keep the EyeMax attached to it for a long time. Refer to Installing/
Replacing the Vmax Battery on page 13.
Proper Mounting Position
The following specifications describe the “proper mounting” of the EyeMax System:
•
Distance: 17 - 28 inches from the user’s face (20 - 24 inches is the “optimal distance”)
•
Angle: parallel to the user’s face
•
Tilt: tilted to match the user’s head position
NOTE
The number of different head positions the user has throughout the day should be an important
consideration when considering mounting components and options.
To set the proper height for the Maestro/Vmax: imagine a line, perpendicular to the user’s
face, extending out from the user’s eye. This line should intersect the top of the Maestro/Vmax
touch screen. Refer to the diagram below.
GUIDELINES FOR PROPER HEIGHT, DISTANCE, AND ANGLE SETTINGS
Make sure that the user’s eyes are approximately 17 - 28 inches away from the Maestro/Vmax
touch screen. This is the acceptable distance for proper focus of the EyeMax (20 - 24 inches is
the “optimal distance”).
18

Chapter 3: Installation & Setup
NOTE
If the user is wearing glasses, positioning the MaestroVmax below the user’s eyeline may help to
reduce the possibility of glare reflecting off of the glasses’ lenses. Refer to the alternate angle
diagram below as a guideline. You should adjust the height and the tilt of the device to best suit
the user’s needs.
ALTERNATE ANGLE FOR USERS WITH GLASSES
For users leaning to the side, it is helpful to tilt the EyeMax System sideways as well. Rotating
the EyeMax System to match the user’s head angle will greatly increase the allowed head
movement.

NOTE
The mount that you choose should be easily adjustable for situations when the user or the
EyeMax System frequently need to change position.

Eye Track Status Window
The Series 5 software provides an Eye Track Status window that dynamically displays if the
EyeMax System and the user are both positioned properly for optimal use. An example of an
Eye Track Status window is shown below.
EYE TRACK STATUS WINDOW (EXAMPLE)
The green plus signs represent the user’s eyes. The Navigator Dashboard (see Dashboard
Popup (example - EyeTracking Dashboard Main) on page 47) contains an Eye Track Status
window. You may also use the Page Editor in the Series 5 software to create an Eye Track
Status window on any custom page.
NOTE
You may toggle the image in this menu to display either the live camera image or only the eye
glints (green crosshairs that signify the pupil of each eye). To toggle the image, select the
triangular button in the lower right corner of the viewing field. When the image is displaying the live
camera feed, the button symbol will be green crosshairs. When the image is displaying only the
eye glints, the button symbol will change to an eye.
REFERENCE
The Eye Track Status tool is part of the Message Window tool set in the Tools palette of the Page
Editor. For more information, launch the Searchable Help and perform a keyword search on
“Message Window Tool.”

Mounting Options
The DynaVox ConnectIT Mounting System is the primary mounting system for the EyeMax
System. There are also several other mounting options available. Because of this range of
options, mounts are not included in the EyeMax kit that you received from DynaVox. For more
information about the mounting options available from DynaVox, please contact DynaVox
Customer Care and Sales Support.
If you purchase a mounting system from DynaVox or directly from another company - such as
Daessy or CJT - the specific device mounting plate required can be obtained through those
same channels as well. If you purchase a mount from a company that does not specifically
serve the AAC market, you may need to obtain a matching mounting plate from DynaVox.
There are a large number of desk and wall mounts - such as an Ergotron mount - in the
general market that are primarily intended to mount display screens. If you are considering
such a mount, please keep the following in mind:
•
A DynaVox VESA-75 Plate is typically required to attached the device to such a mount.
•
The weight of the EyeMax System (EyeMax/Maestro) is 6 pounds, 5 oz.
The weight of the EyeMax System (EyeMax/Vmax) is 9 pounds, 2 oz.
•
The ability to properly and easily position the system to match the user's most comfortable
position is critical.

Series 5 Software Settings
This section provides instructions for modifying the Series 5 software settings (on your
Maestro/Vmax) to match the user’s preferences and capabilities, and optimize the
performance of the EyeMax System.
ADJUSTING THE EYE TRACKING SELECTION METHOD SETTINGS
The Series 5 software provides an Eye Tracking selection method, which enables users to
make selections on the Maestro/Vmax screen by directing the onscreen cursor (or highlight)
with the EyeMax. Objects can be selected by blinking, dwelling on them for specified amounts
of time, or by using an external switch. This unique selection method allows the user to make
immediate selections instead of waiting for a scan to highlight the individual items, or without
touch.
NOTE
The software default settings may differ from those that were determined as “ideal” during the
user’s trial session with the EyeMax. It may be helpful to contact the person who led the
evaluation session, to obtain those software settings. These software settings can also be
modified over time, as the user gains experience with the EyeMax, or as the user’s access
requirements change.
To activate and customize the Eye Tracking selection method:
1. Select Main Menu > Setup > Setup Menu. The Setup menu will open.
2. Use the Selection Method drop-down menu to choose the Eye Tracking selection
method.

software takes the calibration reading of the user’s eyes, select the Calibrate with Switch
check box. When this check box is selected, the calibration process will pause when each
new target is displayed. The calibration reading for the current target will not be taken until
the user activates the external switch.
NOTE
This feature is helpful for users who have difficulty maintaining position (or attention) throughout
the duration of the calibration process. They can rest or re-position themselves while the target is
paused, and can use the external switch to take the calibration reading when they are properly
positioned and prepared to continue.

Chapter 4: Series 5 Software Settings
USING HOTSPOTS
A “hotspot” is a button that appears on the outside edge of the touch screen of your Maestro/
Vmax. Hotspots provide immediate access to an important page or feature of the Series 5
software.
There are three hotspots available:
•
Dashboard Hotspot - Selecting this hotspot will open a popup (or onscreen keyboard)
that you defined as the “Dashboard.”
•
Pause Selection Hotspot - Selecting this hotspot will prevent the software from
registering another selection until the hotspot is selected again. This provides a “resting
place” for the selection method.
NOTE
The Pause Selection Hotspot is only available when the current selection method is set to Mouse
Pause or Eye Tracking, and a pause (dwell) setting is active. In Eye Tracking, Gaze Pause is
available when blink is active.
•
Zoom Hotspot - The Zoom hotspot works in conjunction with the zoom feature (see
Modify Zoom Settings on page 29). When you select the Zoom Hotspot, the next spot
you select on the touch screen will become the center of the zoom area. From there, you
can use the zoom functionality to magnify the button (or object) that you want to select.
When active, hotspots are always shown “above” the buttons on the current page. They are
always accessible. The following example screen shows all three hotspots, active around the
touch screen.
NOTE
The example shows all three hotspots at their largest size. Hotspots can be sized smaller, so that
they do not occupy as much room on the screen.

Chapter 4: Series 5 Software Settings
Using the Dashboard Hotspot
The Series 5 software allows you to assign a popup (and an onscreen keyboard) that will
always be accessible with only one selection. This popup (or onscreen keyboard) is referred to
as the “Dashboard.”
The Dashboard is opened by selecting the Dashboard Hotspot, which is a button that appears
(when enabled) along the outer edge of the touch screen (you may choose its position). The
Dashboard Hotspot is included in scan patterns, and is always visible on top of the current
page.

Selecting the Dashboard Hotspot will immediately open the popup (or onscreen keyboard) that
you have designated as the Dashboard. The Dashboard will open on top of the current page
or popup. If you are using an onscreen keyboard, selecting the Dashboard Hotspot will open
the Dashboard in place of the current onscreen keyboard.
NOTE
If Eye Tracking is the current selection method, and Show Calibration Hint is active in the
Assistance Settings menu, the Dashboard Hotspot may display a yellow circle in the middle. This
would indicate that the user may need to improve their eye tracking calibration. Refer to Modify
Eye Tracking Assistance Settings on page 34 for more information.

Chapter 4: Series 5 Software Settings
Using the Pause Selection Hotspot
When the Pause Selection Hotspot is turned on, the Series 5 software will not accept any
selections on your device (other than touch enter) until the Pause Selection Hotspot is turned
off. This allows you to take a break from making selections, and prevents any accidental
selections from being made during this time.
NOTE
The Pause Selection Hotspot is only available when the current selection method is set to Eye
Tracking or Mouse Pause, and a pause (dwell) setting is active. In Eye Tracking, Gaze Pause is
available when blink is active.
The Pause Selection Hotspot can be positioned any of several places around the perimeter of
the touch screen (see Using Hotspots on page 44). This hotspot contains an icon that shows
the current selection method (see the following picture).
EYE TRACKING PAUSE SELECTION HOTSPOT (EXAMPLE)
To activate the Pause Selection Hotspot, simply select it. A large pause icon will briefly appear
in the middle of the touch screen, and then fade away, and the icon in the center of the Pause
Selection Hotspot will turn red. Refer to the following example.

Chapter 4: Series 5 Software Settings
NOTE
You can prevent the icon from showing by clearing the Show Fading Icon check box in the Hotspot

When the icon in the Pause Hotspot is red, the pause is enabled. The software will not accept
selections again until you select the Pause Selection Hotspot again. Then the large icon will
re-appear, and the Pause Selection Hotspot icon will return to its normal color (blue).
NOTE
If Gaze Pause is currently active, you can turn it off by either selecting the Pause Hotspot on the
touchscreen, or by looking at a point below the EyeMax camera (typically right between the two
LEDs).
Using the Zoom Hotspot
The Zoom Hotspot works in conjunction with the zoom feature. When you select the Zoom
Hotspot, the next spot you select on the touch screen will become the center of the zoom area.
The Zoom Hotspot can be positioned on either the left or right sides, the bottom left or bottom
right corners, or the bottom middle of the touch screen (see Using Hotspots on page 44).
When this hotspot is active, it will contain the Zoom icon (a plus sign).
ZOOM HOTSPOT (EXAMPLE)
To activate the Zoom Hotspot, simply select it. The icon in the center of the Zoom Hotspot will
turn green. The next location that you select on the touch screen will become the center of the
zoom area. You can then use the zoom settings to magnify the portion of the touch screen that
you selected (see Modify Zoom Settings on page 29).

Calibration
The EyeMax should be properly calibrated in order to accurately track the user’s eyes and
make the desired selections on the Maestro/Vmax screen. The following sections describe the
process for calibrating the EyeMax. The first method uses the default Dashboard popup, and
the second method uses the Eye Tracking Settings menu (available from the Setup menu).
While both methods will successfully calibrate the EyeMax, the first method is recommended
for eye tracking users who will independently perform the calibration, because it is more direct
and it allows the user to select larger buttons throughout the entire process.
GENERAL CALIBRATION NOTES
When you are calibrating the EyeMax System, consider these general points:
•
It is important to stay relaxed during the calibration process. If your body is tense, or if your
gaze is more intent than normal, this could negatively impact the calibration. You should
stay as relaxed as possible, in your normal position, and allow your eyes to gently follow
the targets.
•
Make sure that all of the options in the Eye Tracking Settings menu have been set to meet
your needs and abilities (refer to Adjusting the Eye Tracking Selection Method
Settings on page 23 for more information).

Troubleshooting
The following table provides suggestions for coping with several kinds of situations that could
be experienced with the EyeMax. We recommend that you take the steps outlined here to see
if they solve any problems you might have before contacting DynaVox Customer Service/
Sales Support.
CALIBRATION ISSUES
Frequent need to recalibrate: general
•
Increase or decrease the distance between the user and the device (move the device, not
the user). Although the optimal distance is 20 - 24 inches, you can change that distance if
doing so results in better calibration.
•
Reassess the tilt and angle of the EyeMax System and adjust it as needed (move the
device, not the user).
•
Adjust the lighting and block sunlight coming into the room from directly behind the
EyeMax System.
•
Check the Eye Track Status menu (or the Eye Track Status tool in the Eye Tracking
Dashboard) to ensure that the device is positioned properly and that the eyes are in view
of the EyeMax camera. There should be a large green “+” mark on each pupil, and two
smaller green “+” marks below each pupil. If there is a bright glint in another location (e.g.,
on wire-rim glasses rims), you may need to reposition the device or the user.
•
Use the Eye Tracking Settings menu to adjust the blink/dwell time and other settings (see
Adjusting the Eye Tracking Selection Method Settings on page 23).
Frequent need to recalibrate: inability to blink
•
Rub the user’s closed eyelids in a circular motion.
•
Gently press a clean, soft cloth against the user’s closed eye to remove excess moisture.
•
Use artificial tears to moisten the user’s eyes.

Chapter 7: Troubleshooting
Frequent need to recalibrate: hard contact lenses
•
Recalibrate as needed. The EyeMax lights may reflect off of the hard contact lenses
instead of the user’s eyes. Hard contact lenses can move around on the user’s eyes,
which will throw off the calibration (this is not an issue with soft contact lenses).
•
Consider increasing the button and font sizes.
•
Ask if the user can stop wearing the hard contact lenses, or switch to soft contact
lenses.
Frequent need to recalibrate: glasses
•
Try positioning the device below the user, and angling it up toward the user’s eyes (see
Proper Mounting Position on page 18).
•
Make sure that there are no reflections from metallic glasses frames or from the nose
bridge (wire-rim glasses can be problematic). See if the user can switch to different
frames, or use masking tape to cover some of the reflective surfaces.
•
Try tilting and angling the device so that any reflections of the EyeMax lights on the
glasses are as far away from the user’s pupil as possible.
•
Any reflective coatings on the lenses can interfere with proper calibration. See if the user
can switch to different glasses without any coatings.
•
Ask if the user can wear “blended” bifocals (instead of “hard-line” bifocals).
•
Consider increasing the button and font sizes or asking the user to stop wearing the
glasses.
The user is unable to keep his or her body steady during the calibration.
•
See if someone else can perform the calibration on the user’s behalf. If possible, find a
person with facial features (shape of the eyes, distance between the eyes) similar to the
user’s.
•
You may also want to consider purchasing a comfortable head brace that allows for limited
movement, but does not completely lock user’s the head in place. This may help the user
maintain his or her gaze on the Maestro/Vmax touch screen.
The user is unable to follow the calibration targets.
68
•
Point to each target as it appears (position yourself so that your arm does not obscure the
user’s eyes from the EyeMax camera).
•
Connect a switch to your Maestro/Vmax and select the Calibrate With Switch check box
in the Calibration Settings menu.

Chapter 7: Troubleshooting
GENERAL ISSUES
NOTE
Each time the EyeMax cannot locate the user’s pupil(s), it considers that a "blink" (even if the user
may not have actually blinked). Dwell may therefore be a better selection method setting for users
with excessive head movement.
The system is accidentally selecting the wrong buttons.
•
Switch to a page set with fewer targets and larger buttons.
•
Adjust the blink and/or dwell settings in the Eye Tracking Settings menu (see Adjusting
the Eye Tracking Selection Method Settings on page 23).
•
Use the Highlight Rules menu to turn on and/or adjust the “fill and drain” settings (see
Modify Highlight Rules Settings on page 32).
The user has a droopy eyelid that covers part of the pupil.
•
Mount the device higher so the user is looking up at it. This makes it easier for the camera
to locate and track the user’s eyes.
The user has difficulty accessing buttons on the edges of the screen/page.
•
Move the device screen a few inches farther away from the user.
•
If there are buttons on the edges of the screen that will be used frequently, consider
swapping them with buttons closer to the middle of the screen that are used less
frequently.
The user has either horizontal OR vertical eye movement only (not both).
•
Program the user’s pages to accommodate the available eye movement.
The user has head movement.
•
If the user had previously used a head switch, he or she will have to “unlearn” that muscle
movement in order to effectively use the device.
•
Try using the Dwell setting in the Select With drop-down menu in the in the Eye Tracking
Settings menu (see Adjusting the Eye Tracking Selection Method Settings on
page 23). The Dwell default time is three times slower than the Blink default time.
The user cannot wear glasses due to a BiPap breathing machine.
•
Ask the user’s physician/respiratory therapist/pulmonologist about switching to a BiPap
mask with nasal and mouth interfaces that are compatible with eyeglasses.
•
Increase the button and font sizes and do not wear the glasses.

Chapter 7: Troubleshooting
The user’s eyes get tired after using the eye tracking system for a time.
70
•
Encourage the user to take occasional breaks (at least once every hour).
•
Encourage the user to make a conscious effort to blink more often.
•
Use artificial tears to moisten the user’s eyes.
•
Typically, this fatigue will decrease in a few days.
