Education Joint Affinity Group Meeting: The Acculturation of
International Students
Embassy C
As business and education become more global, many business
schools are welcoming increasing numbers of students from outside
their countries. This creates new challenges for faculty and staff
who work with the students on a daily basis while they are studying.
Each school has its own approach to how to prepare the students for
the local education culture and environment and for both the local
and global business cultures and environments. We will hear about
the approaches that several schools have taken to prepare their nondomestic students and discuss lessons that each of us have learned
and how we might all work to better prepare and train business
globalists at our institutions.

Breakfast Bonus Session: Building a Collaborative
Research Enterprise
Embassy CD
Developing an effective and collaborative college faculty is one of the
most important responsibilities of an associate dean. This has become
more challenging as faculty members’ backgrounds have become more
diverse. One prominent trend is the addition of scholarly practitioners
to business school faculties. Scholarly practitioners’ limited research
background coupled with scholarly academics’ skepticism of the
“scholarly practitioner” concept can impede collaboration between these
groups. This session will explore the use of case research as a means
to integrate scholarly practitioners into the college research enterprise
while helping refine their understanding of the craft of teaching,
collaborating with scholarly academics to build mutual respect, and
connecting with business leaders and advisory board members in a way
that deepens stakeholders’ engagement with the college.

CONCURRENT SESSIONS
(C1) A Partnership-Driven Approach to Internationalizing
B-Schools
Embassy AB
Traditionally, b-schools have an internationalization formula that
revolves around international students. The formula goes something
like this: Bring in more international students + plug them into joint
academic experiences with domestic students = internationalizing the
b-school. The partnership-driven approach, on the other hand, is based
on a platform of intentionally focusing on areas of mutual gains based
on the internationalization trends. Internationalizing the b-school is not
a goal but rather a byproduct of the process. This approach broadens
the scope of internationalization beyond international students. First,
it ensures that the b-school internationalization process is self-funded.
Second, it ensures that integrating the cultural nuances happens
through strategically designed curricular and co-curricular activities.
Third, it includes more stakeholders, such as students, faculty, staff,
advisory board members, local industry, and governments.

(C2) How to Motivate Faculty
Embassy CD
This session will consider what motivating factors will create
better teachers, researchers, and business school faculty members.
Attendees will have the opportunity to hear about the development
of two strategies linked to the motivation of faculty. The first
example is based on the development of a vision, mission, and
strategy to support and develop staff using a holistic approach that
encompasses a sense of well-being in staff. The second example will
consider the University of Denver’s model and approach to supporting
and motivating tenure- and non-tenure-track staff that includes
long-term career paths. The final part of the session will engage
attendees in an interactive exercise to collectively generate a list of
ideas for motivating tenure- and non-tenure-track staff that could be
implemented after the conference.

Online programs are now ubiquitous in business schools, and
program ranking methodologies like those used by the Financial
Times and US News assess capabilities including program delivery,
online interaction, and student engagement. While there are no
precise definitions for these capabilities, there remains a stigma that
online offerings need to aspire to be like on-site counterparts. For
example, US News states, “Quality online MBA programs promote
participation in courses, allowing students opportunities to readily
interact with their instructors and classmates, as is possible in a
campus-based setting.” The session addresses this enduring stigma
and will explore how online program delivery, interactions, and
engagement can set new standards for student success.
