Peggy Young ’62
Peggy became a snowbird this year – what a good winter this has been to be in
Florida! She met many new people – friendly and from many states. Her family
is glad they have a place to go to when it’s snowing in Wisconsin. She has a
granddaughter who will be visiting with some college friends next year, when they
have a spring break. That sure will be FUN!
Honorary Alumni
Pictured is Sue Taylor with members of her former kindergarten class

2014 Honorary Alumni and were honored at graduation.
Kip Whitlinger ’63
Kip, former XHS basketball standout, will be inducted into the Wisconsin Basketball
Coaches Association 2014 Hall of Fame on September 27, in a ceremony to be held
in Wisconsin Dells. Kip is Xavier’s all-time leading scorer and his #22 jersey has
been retired and hangs in his honor in the Torchy Clark Gym. Congratulations Kip!
James Bohren ’66
James was re-elected to the City of Sheboygan City Council. Jim is starting his fifth
two-year term. Other than his alderperson position, Jim is retired, having sold his
Beltone Hearing Aid practice in Sheboygan in 2006. Jim and his wife Marilyn like to
travel as much as possible and spent 16 days in February in Vero Beach, Florida.
Beth Rippl ’74
After retiring from Xavier High School in June 2014, Beth is following her dream of
opening a gift shop. Fresh Expressions is located in the former Glass Onion store
on College Avenue. The shop is full of many different kinds of gifts: serve ware,
wooden bowls, glass bowls, vases, tote bags, frames, children’s blankets and lovely
games, botanical lotions and soaps, scarves, cards, necklaces, bracelets, felted wool
bags and trivets......just to name a few. She also has a large selection of specialty
beads for those who miss the Glass Onion. Stop by and say hi!
Sister Mary Ann Spanjers ’77
Franciscan Sister of Christian Charity Sister Mary Ann Spranjers, OSF, friend of
Brother Shamus J. McGrenra, TOR for 14 years, aided him on his third charity ride
5 states in 5 days July 22-25, 2014. Sister Mary Ann’s reasons for participation are
personal and spiritual. “My dad died of cancer a number of years ago. He was a
very kind man with a deep faith. Brother Shamus’ faith and trust in God’s love in
the midst of the suffering and pain brings back memories of my dad’s journey.”

In July 2013, Christopher opened the doors to Helen’s House, a four-bedroom home
on the north side of Appleton. Helen’s House provides individualized personal care
and nursing services to four residents. Christopher opened the home as a tribute
to his mother, Helen, a lifelong resident of Appleton who recently passed away. An
experience towards the end of her life inspired Christopher to change his career
path. He has since opened another house in Kaukauna and has two more in process.

Doctorate in Orlando, Florida. He will pursue his career in Florida.
Tiffany Woelfel ’07
Tiffany, a current student at the University of Wisconsin Law School, was named
to both the Wisconsin Law Review and the Wisconsin Moot Court Board for 2014
- 2016. The Law Review is a student-run journal of legal analysis and commentary,
and sponsors an annual symposium at which leading scholars debate a significant
issue in contemporary law. Moot Court is a competitive mock appellate advocacy
experience that helps law students develop key practice skills. Tiffany is one of only
12 students to be selected for these dual honors and one of two XHS graduates.
Katie Schmidt ’08
Katie graduated in May from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music with a Masters
in Music. This summer she will sing in the Midwest Institute of Opera’s Carmen and

Xavier Catholic Schools Update
The 2014-2015 school year kicks off the new structure of the St. Francis Xavier
Catholic School System. We are pleased to welcome our new and returning
leaders for our schools. Xavier Elementary School is comprised of two
campuses that will educate our pre-kindergarten through grade four students.
Our Marquette Street campus will be led by Laura Barnett as principal and
our McDonald Street campus by Carol Wilant as principal. Xavier Middle
School will be educating students in grades 5 – 8 with Dave Callan (XHS ’73) as
principal. Xavier High School welcomes Mike Mauthe as the new principal.

educators. His parents were both teachers in the local public school district.
Todd comes to us from Austin, Texas where he was principal of St. Ignatius
Martyr Catholic School. He brings a vast amount of experience in instructional
technology, school accreditation, and strategic planning.
Our new website was launched in June (xaviercatholicschools.org). Please
check it out to read about what is happening within our schools throughout
the year and keep up to date regarding alumni activities.

Faculty Feature: Linda Schraufnagel
Linda Schraufnagel was a woman who
dedicated her life to education and to
her faith. She began her career as the
Religious Education Coordinator at
Sacred Heart Parish in Oshkosh in 1978
and moved into teaching full time as an
elementary educator at St. Patrick’s in
Ripon (1979-1984). She joined the Xavier
community in 1986 when she became a
freshman and sophomore religion teacher
and went on to become a member of the
World Languages department, teaching
Spanish.
Linda’s love for teaching was evident to all those around her. She
understood the mind of a teenager and, in her imperturbable way,
would teach Biblical history in ways that captured and kept her
students’ attention. She wasn’t one to “teach to the test.” Many of her
exams offered students the opportunity to add what they learned in
her class – things that weren’t necessarily on the test – because to her,
learning was the goal.
Not one to get rattled, if anyone acted up during class, all it took was
a look and maybe a few stern words from Linda to regain control. She
gave her all to her students who knew that they could call or email her
anytime for help. She even took phone calls and answered emails from
her students while she was on vacation.
Never one to stop learning, Linda returned to school in the fall of 2000
to become certified as a Spanish teacher. She went to Cuernavaca,
Mexico, even before taking classes to make sure she was fluent in
Spanish because she wanted to give her students her very best.
Her involvement at school extended beyond the classroom. During her
early years at XHS, she was the coordinator of the school’s Flag Squad
and Dance and Drill Team and, in later years, she oversaw National
Honor Society. She also mentored a group of students who offered
their painting skills as an item up for bid at Celebrate and accompanied
them to the winner’s home where she made sure the painting was
done well.
For some of us, she was also our good friend’s mom and she and her
husband, George, always made us feel welcome in their home. The
Thank you!
Thank you to everyone who attended Food Fair and stopped
at the Alumni Tent on May 4th! It was another fun and
successful event.
Many thanks to the alumni who supported the St. Francis
Xavier Fund during 2013-2014! Alumni who made a gift
between July 1, 2013 and June 30, 2014 are listed on the
following page. The St. Francis Xavier Fund is THE best and
most important way to ensure that our Catholic school system
continues to provide quality education that is strongly rooted

Schraufnagel house was a safe and comforting place, a house of
love and lots of activity. With two teenage daughters, lots of friends,
exchange students, and her and George’s busy schedule, something
was always happening, some kind of drama was always unfolding and
in the midst of it all, Linda would stay on keel, ever calm, and make sure
business was taken care of. As one of her daughter’s friends would say,
“A train could come through the Schraufnagel house and it wouldn’t
phase her in the least.” Linda would open her house to us any day of
the week, cook for us (who could forget the pizza egg rolls!), talk with
us, and even look the other way when we got into a little trouble.
Linda’s generosity continued beyond our high school years. When
a former student’s mom could not make it back to Appleton to help
her daughter with wedding planning, Linda stepped in and took her
shopping for her wedding dress. She had a whole itinerary of shops to
visit and made no bones about her opinion on which dresses looked
good, and which didn’t.
In fact, with Linda, you always knew what she was thinking, you always
knew where you stood and you always loved her for it.
We lost Linda much too soon and are grateful for her 28 years of
service to Xavier and a lifetime of the love, laughter and memories she
brought to everyone whose lives she touched.
