Hi guys, today we are going to see the chapter The
Blue Whale In this chapter, we are given details of blue whale. Its
weight is over 1,30,000 kg. It can be 33 meters long. Its tongue is
three meters thick. Some of its arteries are so big that children can
swim in it. Though it has a huge body, it can swim at a great speed of
30 kms per hour. It can eat upto 4000 kilos of food in a day. A baby
blue whale is about 8 meters long and its weight is around 10000 kg.
The blue whales often sing and we can hear their song from the
distance of 400 kms. Surprised! Now, lets go in detail.

Mammals are intelligent
animals. They have well-developed brains. So
they can learn to do many things. For example,
dogs can be trained to help blind people.
Elephants can be trained to carry heavy loads.
Moreover, they send messages using different
sounds.

Mammals have many
things in common. They have warm blood.
They all have hair or fur on their bodies.
They have two pairs of limbs like arms and
legs. Mammals use their limbs in different
ways. The antelope and zebra have long
limbs. They can run fast. Monkeys have
limbs like ours. They can climb up trees and
run fast. Whales and seals can swim fast.

The Blue Whale is the
biggest mammal in the world. A blue whale
can grow upto 33 metres and weigh over
1,30,000 kg. It is more than the weight of
2500 people. Its tongue is three metres
thick. The tongue itself is heavier than an
elephant. Children can swim in some of the
arteries ! A blue whale is an extremely
strong creature. It can drown a huge ship.
Even with such a huge body, a whale can
sometimes swim at a great speed of 30 kms
per hour!

A whale can eat upto 4100
kilos of food a day. But it has no teeth. It
swallows a huge quantity of water. Then it
throws it out through a sieve of bones in the
upper jaw. The sieve is called a “baleen”.
Some whales have teeth, too. They eat fish
and other sea creatures. They even eat
small whales.


A blue whale has a tail like a
fish, therefore some people think that it is a
fish. But it is not. The blue whale breathes
air. It can stay under water for an hour. Then
it comes to the surface to breathe. When it
breathes out, it blows out water. From
distance, this looks like a fountain. Secondly,
the whale is a warm-blooded creature but
the fish has cold blood. The blue whale has
a thick layer of fat under its skin. Therefore,
even in ice-cold water it can live. Thirdly the
fish lays eggs, but the whale gives birth to
young ones. Therefore, we call it a mammal.
At the time of birth, the young one is about
8 metres long and it weighs around 10000
kg.

In some ways, whales are like human
beings. For example, they live in families.
The young whale lives with its parents. for
about 15 years. Further, the blue whales
often sing in their own ways. One can hear
their songs even from he distance of 400
kms.

The whale is an interesting
creature. We do not know many things
about it. Yes, we know one thing very well.
Their number is decreasing very fast. Soon
there may be no whales. Men hunt and kill
them because all the parts of a whale are
useful. All the nations should come together
to protect such a wonderful sea creature.

Read this poem aloud
I wonder why the grass is green,
And why the wind is never seen.
Who taught the birds to build a nest,
And told the trees to take a rest?
And , when the moon is not quite round,
Where can the missing bit be found?
Who lights the stars, when they blow out,
And makes the lightning flash about?
Who paints the rainbow in the sky,
And hangs the fluffy clouds so high?
Why is it now, do you suppose,
That Dad won’t tell me, if he knows?
