The Red and White Plum Blossoms, a national treasure
and museum collection Rinpa works
February 1 (Friday) ~ March 20, 2013 (Wednesday/a national holiday)
National Treasure: RED AND WHITE PLUM BLOSSOMS Ogata Kō rin〔fig.1〕
MOA Museum of Art honorably presents a national treasure, ‘Red and White Plum Blossom s’, by
Ogata Korin, which is a renowned masterpiece of Japanese art, together with other museum collection by
Hon’ami Koetsu, Tawaraya Sotatsu, Ogata Kenzan and Sakai Hoitsu will fascinate you with our
outstanding Rinpa works.
The Kano school and the Tosa school were led by members of each family who inherited their position.
On the other hand, Rinpa, the leading school of decorative art during the Edo period, was also a style of
painting that developed through the inspiration and influence gained from oth er artists rather than the
hereditary system. Rinpa was originated in the early Edo period by Han’ami Koetsu and Tawaraya
Sotatsu and the style was continued by Ogata Korin and Ogata Kenzan.
About 100 years later in the
Bunka, Bunsei period, Sakai Hoitsu ,who were inspired by Korin, revived the style and popularity of
Rinpa.
Rinpa works feature themes from natural motifs and classical literature and they were not only applied
to paintings but also to other decorative works such as ceramic vessels, lacque rware containers, or
kimonos, adding color to the life of the upper class in the period.
Please spend a moment in early spring to visit our museum and enjoy the outstanding Rinpa works by
which we still find ourselves fascinated over time.
