Mike Medina - Angevine Middle School

Dear Angevine Community,
August 2016
We are hopeful everyone has enjoyed a pleasant summer break! As we plan for the return of 730
delightful middle school students we are pleased with several changes at Angevine. The
community passed a bond to improve all schools in BVSD. The bond work will be completed in
three phases, the schools with the greatest need and new schools are phase one. Angevine was
designated as phase three therefore we won't see the planned improvement for a couple of
years. Currently they are working on phase one projects. We did get a new soccer and football
field and a six lane track. The finishing touches on the north field are close to be completion.
First Day of School for 6th Grade: The first day of school for 6th grade students is Thursday,
August 18th. Students will report to school at 8:40 and meet their Bobcat 360 Leaders and
teachers outside the main entrance. This will be a fun day of orientation to middle school. The
day will end at 3:40. Students will need to bring a sack lunch or they can purchase lunch in the
cafeteria for $3.75. Buses will run for 6th grade students on their first day of school. Students do
not need to bring backpacks or school supplies.
First Day of School for All Grades: All grades will report back to school on Friday, August
19th. The school hours are 8:40 to 3:40.
We have hired several new and talented teachers at Angevine. You can meet these new staff
members and all other teaching staff on August 24th during Back to School Night. The
evening will begin outdoors at 5:45 pm with food and drinks being served. More specific
information will be sent home and shared electronically during the next week.
We look forward to seeing you soon.
In Partnership with Community,
Mike Medina

TO ALL BVSD PARENTS AND GUARDIANS:
It is time to complete your family’s Annual Data Update (ADU) in preparation for the 2016-17 school year.
This online ADU system has replaced the paper registration process throughout the district. The ADU will
allow you to review the data we currently have for your student(s) and household. You will be able to request
changes and updates if needed. This process also allows you to electronically complete and submit the
Parent/Student Sign-Off Sheet from the Student Rights and Responsibilities Guide. Note--Angevine may
have other site-specific forms that you may be asked to complete. Note--the Free and Reduced Lunch (FRL)
application process is also being switched to an online format for 2016-17 that will be accessed through the
Infinite Campus Parent Portal.
If you have already set up your Parent Portal in Infinite Campus, you can go complete your family’s
Annual Data Update in the system now:
1. Log into your Infinite Campus Portal with the account you previously created.
2. Select the link on the left-hand column titled “Annual Data Update ADU.”
3. A new window will open and you will be directed through the process. Some requested
changes to information may require documentation. Please refer to the help boxes as you
proceed. Make sure to complete all fields marked with a red asterisk (i.e. required information).
If you have NOT yet set up your Parent Portal in Infinite Campus, you should have received an email
recently with a Campus Portal Activation Key and instructions. If you do not have a portal yet and you did
not receive the email with activation key, please contact our Registrar at: [email protected] or 720-561-5800 for assistance.
electrónico: [email protected] or 720-561-5800 para recibir ayuda.

Extended Learning Opportunities (ELO), sometimes referred to as Zero-Hour Classes, are offered before school starting at 7:30

Support and Jazz Band. Each class meets 2 to 4 days per week; none meet on Wednesdays. Many ELO classes allow students
to miss some mornings (e.g. miss one day of Engineering to attend Jazz Band), but policy varies by class. All Angevine families
receive emails as classes become available. If you are interested in a class but unsure about the schedule, do sign up. The first
sign up is to express interest – not make a firm commitment – and you may miss out on important information if you don’t get your
name on the list.

the coach – in most cases you may still join the team. All Interscholastic sports require a sports physical. It is
recommended that sports physicals take place during the summer months for the physical to be valid the entire school year.

have the route number and stop name from your bus schedule when you call.
How do I Pay My Students School Fees? Fees are collected at the beginning of the school year for the BVSD board

AMS WEBSITE
http://anm.bvsd.org/ is a useful tool for keeping up to date on school
activities. The website is updated on a regular basis with current sports
and academic activities and schedules. You will also find staff bios, the
school calendar and information on AMS programs. Contact Susan
Montoya for more information at 720-561-7107 or
[email protected].
IMPORTANT ATTENDANCE INFORMATION
As a part of our on-going efforts to improve academic
achievement, we are focusing on student attendance at AMS.
We want to stress how important it is to attend school
consistently. High absenteeism can have a negative impact on your
child’s ability to succeed in school. Studies show that students who
attend school regularly are more invested in school and more successful
overall. We are committed to your child and your child’s academic
success. When a student is in the habit of attending every day and
arriving on time in middle school the child will have the pattern of
behavior engrained when they reach high school.
We need your help. The state of Colorado has a compulsory
attendance law that requires students age 6 through 17 to attend
regularly. If your child is absent, please call the attendance line at 720561-7102 or notify the attendance secretary, Susan Montoya, at 720-5617107 to inform her of the absence. Doctor’s notes are very important for
absences due to illness and appointments. Also, if you know ahead of
time of a prearranged absence, please call to make arrangements to
receive the prearranged absence form.
Angevine Middle school has a consistent attendance policy and
will contact parents of any students that have 2 or more unexcused days
or 8 or more undocumented, excused days. If you have any questions
regarding the attendance policy please call Susan Montoya at 720-5617107.
BVSD SCHOOL MESSENGER
BVSD uses SchoolMessenger to send various communications from the
district and schools to parents and staff. This includes attendance calls,
meal account balance notices, emails from the superintendent, and
emergency notifications. Your contact information as it appears in
Infinite Campus is uploaded into the SchoolMessenger system every
night, so it is very important that your information is correct in Infinite
Campus. If it is not correct, please contact your school to have your
information updated.
SchoolMessenger has a feature called “Contact Manager” in which
parents can set preferences for which telephone numbers or email
addresses are used depending on what sort of communication is being
sent. Cell phone numbers can be added to receive text messages. If you
do not set your preferences in Contact Manager, SchoolMessenger
automatically calls ALL telephone numbers in the database for you in
case of an emergency (even if you answer the first one that it dials). To
create your account in Contact Manager, you will need to know your
child(ren)’s BVSD Student ID Number(s). (This number is the same as
your child’s lunch account number. It also appears in Infinite Campus
and on your student’s report card.) You will also need to be able to use
one of the phones associated with your child’s student record in order
to activate your account. You can learn more about it in the parent
section of the BVSD website at
http://www.bvsd.org/parents/Pages/default.aspx.
Changes in contact information
Parents/guardians please contact Sonia in the registrar’s office at 720561-5800 if there have been any changes in your address, phone, or email. All school information including weekly announcements,
newsletters and special announcements are sent to parents via email.
Please submit current information via Parent Portal.

IMPORTANT IMMUNIZATION INFORMATION!
Starting July 1, 2016 parents/guardians seeking non-medical (religious or
personal belief) exemptions for children in kindergarten-12th grade must
submit non-medical exemption forms annually. Medical exemptions only
need to be submitted once and require the signature of your child’s doctor or
advanced practice nurse. To submit a non-medical or medical exemption, go
to www.colorado.gov/vaccineexemption and follow the instructions. Children
with an exemption may be kept out of school during a disease outbreak.
About one year ago, Colorado Board of Health changed its school
immunization requirements to be in compliance with the Advisory Committee
on Immunization Practices (ACIP). Changes in the immunization
requirements take some time to be integrated into Infinite Campus (which is
independent company not linked to the state health department). Your
student may have been shown as having all necessary immunizations. Now
that the new state requirements are loaded, Infinite Campus may show your
student’s requirements have not been met. Frequently, it is a timing issue –
the last vaccine was given too early to give the best immunity – and a booster
vaccination is needed. In the fall you may receive notice of such noncompliance. If you have any questions regarding your child’s immunizations
please contact Darcie Wein in the Health Room at 720-561-7109 or
[email protected]. You can also access the immunization schedule at
this link- http://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/who/teens/downloads/parent-versionschedule-7-18yrs.pdf
Welcome New and Returning TAG Families!
We hope you had a restful and rejuvenating Summer break! You will find a
familiar face as well as a new one in the TAG department. Kim Klein is
returning to AMS again this year but will be your friendly TAG Coordinator!
Our new TAG Advisor is Kathy Kohler and, while she is new to our
department, she was here all last year in the Special Education program. We
are super excited to have Kathy on board!
Please stop by the TAG room (409) during Back To School on August 24th to
introduce yourselves and your student, ask questions, or find out more about
opportunities for your child.
Regarding TAG at Angevine, there are a few things that families and students
can take advantage of this year:
●
More information will be coming soon regarding
National Junior Honor Society. Look for an email being sent to
families of 7th and 8th graders who meet the minimum GPA
requirement.
● Clubs, clubs and more clubs! NXT Robotics, Drama,
Club Mestiza, Geography Club, Yearbook Club, Chess, Bon
Appetit, Student Council, and more!
● Our website is undergoing some updating but we will
send out the link as it is established. Keep an eye on it for TAG
information, competitions in the district and community, as well as
other opportunities for our students.
● Community TAG email list – Contact
[email protected] to get on this valuable list to learn
about more resources as well as weekly updates on the latest in
research and issues of interest. This list is open to all regardless
of TAG identification.
Please let us know if you are interested in sharing your time and talent with
our students. Through your help, we can offer additional opportunities
including Destination Imagination. We will also be needing volunteers for
Spelling Bee, Spanish Spelling Bee, Geography Bee, Battle of the Books,
and other offerings here at Angevine.

EMERGENCY INFORMATION:
It is extremely important that the Emergency Information
page be returned to school on the first day. Please complete the
entire form and be sure to sign the bottom. If there is ever an
emergency, this is the information we use to contact you and
provide to emergency personnel for treatment. Include
information on any medications prescribed for your child,
whether or not they are given during the school day. Also
describe any health conditions which may affect your child’s
school routine or performance. Please do not leave anything
blank. Please indicate if something is not applicable. It is
important that two emergency contacts are listed and let them
be aware they are on the list. Be sure to notify the office with
any changes in emergency information and phone numbers:
both home and work. If your child is ill, he or she may be
released to only those listed on the Emergency Information
card.

Attention all 7th and 8th grade Honor Roll Students!
We are looking for new members to induct into the AMS Chapter of
National Junior Honor Society. NJHS is a nation-wide organization that
recognizes students who demonstrate excellence in the following
categories: Scholarship, Leadership, Service, Citizenship, and Character.
If you have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher, and you have some
history of community service, you are qualified for NJHS. Community
service could be volunteering with a youth group, mowing the lawn for
a neighbor, babysitting for your cousins, or any work that was helpful
for which you were not paid. Our AMS Chapter worked last year to
coordinate the Frank Shorter Race 4 Kids' Health, serve dinner to the
homeless with the Boulder Bridge House, and support student council
in creating Thanksgiving bags for our community. In high school,
members of NHS are eligible to receive many different college
scholarships.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN INTRAMURAL & INTERSCHOLASTIC SPORTS?
The intramural program provides an introduction to athletics with an emphasis on participation and enjoyment of physical
activity while participating on a team. The program offers approximately three weeks to practice and learn, and it concludes
with a culminating activity with other Boulder Valley intramural teams.
The Interscholastic athletic program provides a transition between the intramural programs of the 6 th and 7th grade levels
and the more competitive high school program. The program offers continued emphasis on participation and enjoyment of
physical activity while allowing increased attention to coaching and skill development, with six to eight contests with other
schools.
Is Your Child Ready to Participate in Middle School Sports?
Is your child planning on participating in Interscholastic sports during the next school year. All Interscholastic sports require
a current physical (within one year) in order to participate. Physicals are recommended for Intramural sports but are not
required. Physical forms are available to download on the CHSAA website.
$85.00 fee, $405 family cap, physical and parental consent required.
Athletic Registration is now ONLINE!
Links to athletic registration are available on the AMS website at https://angevine.revtrak.net/tek9.asp?pg=rw_athletics.
Parent/Guardian(s) and Student-Athletes will need to complete the online registration together. (There are places for both parents and
students to sign and agree.) In order to participate on the first official day of practice, all fees must be paid (credit, cash, or
check) and registration paperwork must be completed. Online registration and payment receipts (or signed registration paperwork
and payment) must be submitted to Michele Peel in the office along with a current physical for Interscholastic sports. (Physicals are
recommended for Intramural sports but not required.) If you have specific questions, contact Michele Peel at 720-561-7106 or email
[email protected]. Families who do not have internet access at home may register on a school computer or may pick up a hard
copy of the athletic registration packet in the office.
FEES:
Participants in athletics are assessed a fee per sport. Middle Level Intramurals are $45.00 per sport; Middle Level Interscholastics
are $85.00 per sport. If you have multiple student athletes or children playing at both the high school and middle level in BVSD, there
is a combined family cap of $405.00. Once you have reached combined max, please make copies of your receipts and present them to
the school when requesting the next sport waiver. Athletic fees are waived for students with free or reduced lunch status and in cases of
financial emergency: contact the school for an application and/or additional information.

Fundraising at Angevine Middle School
 Check Writing Campaign – All families, friends and relatives are welcome to
support AMS through our Check Writing Campaign which is exactly what it says;
write a check out to AMS for any amount any time throughout the school year.
Our goal this year is to raise $30,000 which breaks down to $48 per family. All
donations made directly to the school are 100% tax deductible.
 King Soopers Gift Cards – King Soopers Gift Cards are available in the AMS
office for $5. They are pre-loaded with $5 and you will add more money prior to
your grocery or gas purchases. AMS receives 5% from all purchases made with
the King Soopers gift cards.
 Safeway Gift Cards – Safeway Gift Cards are available in the AMS office for
$5 and work just like the King Soopers Cards. AMS receives 5% from all
purchases made with the Safeway Gift Cards.
 Albertsons Community Partner Cards – AMS has partnered with
Albertsons Community Partner Cards. There is no money involved. All you do is
scan your Albertsons Community Partner card prior to check out and AMS will
receive up to 5% from all sales. Cards are available in the front office.
 Milk Caps for Moola – Longmont Dairy gives AMS five cents for each
Longmont Dairy beverage cap.
 Take Charge of Education with Target - Every time you shop with your
REDcard , Target donates up to 1% of your purchase once you designate AMS as
your school.
 Box Tops for Education – Student Council collects Box Tops for Education
throughout the year and sponsors Box Tops collection competitions a few times
during the school year. Each Box Top is worth ten cents! Box Tops can be turned
into the front office.
Angevine Middle School has redirected our major fundraising efforts from selling products to requesting monetary donations in the
form of a check writing campaign. These checks can be made directly to the school. By doing this, 100% of the money will go
directly to fund our school activities and materials that are not paid for by BVSD. Example of things your generous contributions
provide: Technology Resources, Student Reward items, Bobcat Television, Student Supplies, Field Trips, Class Set Books, Wall
Maps, ROAR/PBS Programs. Our goal is to raise $30,000, which breaks down to approximately $50 per family per school year.
Thank you parents for your awesome support! Remember, donations made directly to the school are 100% tax deductible!
