EQUIPMENT NAMING CONVENTION OVERVIEW This Equipment Naming Convention gives mechanical and electrical designers an understanding of the University's naming philosophy. It provides building acronyms that are used in the building automation systems and it provides accepted acronyms for both systems and system components. It is highly recommended that designers approach the UofA's F&O Design & Technical Services department ([email protected]) early in their design process to obtain the correct starting points for establishing their nomenclature. Upon that initial point of contact, we will provide the designer with a 'snapshot' of the existing relevant systems and components to enable the designer to choose their next available sequential numbers. D&TS can assist with the process of assigning nomenclature if requested. It is important to follow up with D&TS on the chosen nomenclature to ensure numbering reservations can be made in the UofA's asset database. When making that initial point of contact, please provide the following information: - Project Name - Building Name - UofA Project Manager Name - Components being used in the design (eg: pumps, air handling units). Quantities of these components are not required at this point - Systems being designed (eg: lab cold water, lab exhaust, heating water, chilled water) All new equipment shall conform to this naming convention. Existing tags on existing equipment shall be left as is for the life of that equipment. New tags may be applied to existing equipment on an as-needed basis. This convention is used by inhouse University staff and external consultants to the University on both capital and renovation projects. Diagrams have been provided at the end of this Equipment Naming Convention to help the designer understand the application of this convention. The following guidelines apply when using this Equipment Naming Convention: The equipment naming convention will have up to three identifiers in this order: BUILDING IDENTIFIER - SYSTEM IDENTIFIER - COMPONENT IDENTIFIER Sequential numbers given to components shall be reused where applicable. For example, if an old pump P33 is being replaced with a new pump and it serves the same function, the new pump shall bear the same sequential number -P33. The barcodes for the old and new pumps, however, shall be different. Systems are identifed as either "main" systems or "sub-systems" but not both. In general, main systems refer to systems that encompass multiple zones. Sub-systems provide the HVAC requirements for a unique zone. Some systems and sub-systems could be regarded as pieces of equipment, but for the purposes of this convention, they have been identified as systems. Components are pieces of equipment that make up the system or sub-system. Equipment shall be named by the building where they are physically located. All new systems and sub-systems shall conform to this naming convention. Over time, if an entire system or sub-system gets demolished, that system's sequential number shall not get reused. UofAEquipNamingConvRev5 EQUIPMENT NAMING CONVENTION BUILDING IDENTIFIERS The following acronyms are the accepted central University building automation system (BAS or RCMS) acronyms. Optional.} + {D=> Device Designator. Alphanumeric and multi character acceptable but single numeric preferred (although redundant 'B', 'E', & 'S' encouraged for Backup, Emergency, & Standby system devices, e.g. "EPWR6-PNLE1"); must be unique to floor in that device class or building if floor locations are not used for that device class.; CDPs and PNLs are considered one class for this purpose.} X => Not an official part of device designation but represents breaker positions, lighting switch ccts, or MCC cells when identifying upstream device. Separate by commas for multiple poles and, due to space limitations, only use "[F]D" for wall plate identification of upstream panels. They will also be classifed under the mechnical system they control.
