NOTES FROM THE BOARD
Your Board of Directors has been busy. We’ve adapted a procedure for receiving dues
payments. We created and approved a new Membership Application form. But, our
focus has been on preparations for Oktoberfest (September 24) and German American
Day (October 7). – Bob Scheetz
I want to thank all of the volunteers that have offered their time to assist with this year’s
Oktoberfest. We could not have done this without you. You embody the true spirit of the
Gold Country German American Club. However, we are short of volunteers for our
German-American Day meeting October 7th. I need volunteers to prepare red cabbage,
to prepare potatoes, to help with bartending and to help with set up and cleanup.
Contact me if you can pitch in. – Leslie (707-738-6132)
Don’t forget to RSVP to Leslie about Oktoberfest!

He was, as certain congressmen said, "So darned affable!" And, if you're a
German-American, he's the president that gave you your special day. In
1983, Ronald Reagan proclaimed October 6 as German-American Day to
celebrate the 300th anniversary of the date that 13 German families from
Krefeld, near the Rhine, landed in Philadelphia and later founded
Germantown, Pennsylvania. Following Reagan's lead, Congress enacted a
joint resolution to designate October 6 as German-American Day, and
Reagan signed it into law on August 18, 1987. Ronald Reagan's nickname
was "Dutch," but it could have easily been "Deutsch."

German-American Ancestry Map
Are you of German ancestry and feeling as though you are all alone? Consider this:
The U.S. Census Bureau's most recent map (from 2000 census) showing which ancestry has the largest
population by county and by state is shown below. The light blue areas, such as shown for every county except
one in the state of Nebraska, indicate primarily German ancestry. If you look closely, you can see that Nevada
County also is primarily of German ancestry. The same is true for Placer County. So, oh German descendant,
you are not alone! But the question is, "Why isn't our club larger?"
It comes as no surprise that the southern states are mostly of Mexican and African ancestry, but look at Florida!
What a surprise! And Germans in Alaska? Yep! Or should we say, "Jawohl!"

Well, actually, Germans do play Scrabble!
However, in the German version of Scrabble, the
letter distribution is different from that of English.
There are tiles for Ä, Ö, and Ü, and there are
more E's in the German tile collection. The point
value for each letter is inversely proportional to
that letter's usage in the language. In English, a
"Z" is worth 10 points; in German, it is worth 3.
In English, a "Y" is worth 4 points; in German, it
is worth 10.
