Each year over 28,000 children
participate in youth development
programs at the Y such as summer
camp and early learning programs.
The Y’s summer day and resident
camps have curriculums that prevent
summertime learning loss and
strengthen academic skills in science,
technology, engineering and math
(STEM) .
The Y’s camps help build critical
character building skills like honesty,
respect, caring and responsibility.
There is so much a child can gain
through participating in youth
development programs at the Y.
The Y prepares your child for the
future so register your child today
for summer day or resident camp.

FREQUENTLY ASKED
QUESTIONS ABOUT
SUMMER CAMP
I completed my camp registration
online. Is my registration complete?
No. Please complete the registration forms
located on our website. Your registration is
not complete until these forms are completed,
filled in and returned to the Y. You can email
them to [email protected] or mail
them to the following address:
YMCA Arlington
Attn: Camp Forms
3422 N. 13th Street
Arlington, VA 22201
What time do I pick-up and drop-off
my camper if they do not participate in
Extended Hours?
Please drop your camper off between
8:45am–9:00am and pick them up between
4:00pm–4:15pm. Travel and Outdoor campers
should not be picked up until between 4:30pm4:45pm.
4
What is the schedule for before and
after care?
Campers will be split up and provided different
low key, age appropriate activities. Part of the
time in after care is spent on activities that
combat summer learning loss.
What information will I get before
camp?
In addition to the parent handbook, a precamp email is our courtesy communication
tool to inform you of the week’s schedule of
activities as well as answer any questions you
may have. If you sign up for a camp ThursdaySunday the week before camp, you will not get
a pre-camp e-mail. If you do not receive a precamp email, please confirm your email address
with the Member Services desk.
How can I get a camp schedule?
Camp schedules are available at the sign in/
sign out desk, from camp staff and at the
Member Services desk two (2) weeks prior to
the beginning of camp, The camp schedule
provides you with information on what your
child will be doing during his/her time at camp.
Please note that these schedules are subject
to change. We do our best to provide you with
information early so you can plan ahead, but
summer camp is full of surprises, and we are
often forced to make changes. This schedule
also gives you information on what to bring.
What should my camper bring to
camp?
All campers must bring a healthy, nut-free
lunch, plenty to drink and two snacks to camp
daily. Please send only non-perishable foods
because refrigeration is not possible. Campers
should also bring their own water bottle to
stay hydrated during the day. Send your child
to camp with a backpack to keep all of the
belongings together. Swimsuit and towel. A hat
for sun protection.
*See checklist on page 3.
What to bring for travel camp?
Please label all items with name and phone
number. Campers must bring a healthy, nut
free lunch, 2 snacks and plenty to drink each
day. Campers should not need, nor should
bring large sums of money. Trips are subject to
change, so campers should bring a backpack
with swimsuit, towel and sunscreen each day,
regardless of the schedule. All campers should
wear comfortable and appropriate attire, such
as T-shirts, shorts and tennis shoes. Please do
not wear sandals or flip flops.
Should I pack water for my child?
Yes. Though we fill coolers for the kids and
our staff make regular trips to the restrooms
and drinking fountains, parents are ultimately
responsible for sending their child with plenty
of fluids for the day.
What should my campers wear to
camp?
Children should wear clothing suitable for an
active day at camp. Appropriate items would
include shorts, t-shirts, light jackets (for chilly
mornings), and athletic shoes (no sandals).
Please label all items sent to camp with the
child’s first and last name. Our camps use
discovery and play as a major part of our camp
program, thus we encourage you to dress your
child in clothing that you do not mind getting
dirty or stained with art materials in the course
of your child engaging in a fun activity.
SUMMER CAMP 2017 | YMCA of Metropolitan Washington | 1.800.473.YMCA |
Is there a dress code for CITs?
Counselors-in-Training, Leaders-in-Training,
and LGIT should dress just like the staff,
wearing black or khaki shorts or pants and CIT
shirt each day. While swimming, girl CITs should
wear a modest one piece suit and boys should
wear shorts-style suits. Sneakers should be
worn daily.
When will my camper swim?
All Aquatics and Traditional campers will swim
daily. All other campers may or may not swim.
Schedules will be sent 2-4 days prior to the
beginning of camp and will be available on the
first day. Some campers may swim on Mondays,
so please bring your swimsuit daily. This does
not include the Gymnastics Academy Camp that
will not be swimming during their camp day.
Should my campers bring money to
camp?
What happens if my child is late for
Travel/Outdoor Camp?
Unfortunately, we cannot hold the bus for a
camper who is running late. We will accept
them into a camp at the branch or offsite
location that piques their interest. You may
also drop off you camper at their field trip
destination.
What happens when my child needs to
be picked up early?
No problem! Please contact the Y prior to pick
up to ensure that your child is ready.
I am running late. What should I do?
Please contact the Y as soon as you know you
or your authorized pick-up person will be late.
We do charge $1 per minute you are late after
the designated pick-up time.
No. Camp fees include all day trip admission
fees. The only exception is on extended
trips where campers may want to purchase
souvenirs, designated Pizza Fridays, or special
camp carnivals.
What if my camper loses something at
camp?
We know that sometimes things just get lost.
Please label all of your child’s belongings. The
best way to prevent the loss of property is to
leave it at home! There will be a designated
Lost and Found at each camp location. Please
check for your child’s items. Lost and found
items are kept at the YMCA for one week after
camp and then disposed or donated to charity.
The YMCA is not responsible for camper
possessions that are lost or stolen.

At the Y, we help youth set and achieve their
personal and educational goals. They gain confidence as
they recognize the Y as a place where they belong and can
feel comfortable exploring new interests and passions. A
unique program designed especially for teenagers and a
careful balance of program components has been created to
foster creativity, adventure, peer interaction, leadership skills,
values clarification and friendships that will last a lifetime.

LEADERS-IN-TRAINING
The Leaders-in-Training program provides middle and high school youth with
opportunities for leadership training and service learning experiences with the
goal to create a team of young people that will better service their community
and the Y as they encourage one another to make a positive impact for present
and future generations. Leaders-in-Training begin to learn practical leadership
skills, participate in teambuilding activities and spend time working hands-on
with a group of traditional campers. Combined with traditional camp activities,
field trips and more, Leaders-in-Training transition seamlessly from camp to
Counselors-in-Training!
COUNSELORS-IN-TRAINING
Counselors-in-Training is a teen program specifically designed for our
future leaders. This two-phase program first sends your teen through a
week of training in First Aid, CPR, working with 5-12 year olds, camp songs,
games and crafts. After successfully completing training and achieving CiT.
status, participants will be assigned to assist our talented day camp staff
with the daily operation of the traditional camps. This program provides an
excellent opportunity for these teens to learn hands-on job experience and
responsibilities, while still under the supervision of our camp staff team.
LIFEGUARD-IN-TRAINING
Our Lifeguard in Training Camp combines the leadership aspects of the
Leaders-in-Training and Counselor in Training Programs with a hands-on
experience for campers interested in learning about the responsibilities of
keeping people safe around water. First Aid and CPR, water rescue techniques
and other topics related to lifeguarding are provided by trained and certified
staff. Not only does this valuable experience build self-confidence and skills
for life, it focuses on the skills and training those participants will need to be
successful YMCA Lifeguard candidates once they reach an age to be certified.
Please note: This week long camp is NOT a certification course.

Get creative and learn how to make a variety of crafts. Tie-dye a
t-shirt, learn what boondoggle is, stamp a leather key chain, and use
beads for more than just jewelry (maybe a sun catcher, or to design
a creature)! Leather, beads, baskets, and more are just some of the
materials you’ll use to make creative crafts in this custom camp.
Parents are invited to the Parent Café each Friday at 3pm to
sample their campers creations.
THEATER CAMP
Campers will learn all the aspects of theatre from character creation
to costumes, and set design to performance. Improvisation, make-up,
songs, props, and characterization are just some of the techniques
to be practiced. Through creating, writing and performing their own
play, campers will gain the self-esteem and confidence to make their
Broadway debut. Campers will learn the many different aspects of
theatre including the basics of singing, acting, staging and
choreography as they work toward a final Friday performance.

HORSEBACK
An introduction to riding basics, horse care, and
responsibility taught in a safe and fun environment!
Campers will go to the stables for 2 hours each day to
learn what it’s like to own and ride their own horse. Riders
will learn basic horse care skills, such as grooming, hoof
cleaning, tack care, barn chores, and how to maintain the
well-being of horses, while learning to be safe around the
barn. The emphasis of this camp is on safety and respect
for the horse and his care. Campers will ride each day
and learn basic position on the horse, including steering
and control with individual attention while riding. As an
introductory camp, the riding is taught by an experienced
instructor with riders on the horse one at a time. The
instructor stays with the child while on the horse and helps
him/her maintain proper position while guiding the horse.
Campers are organized into groups of no more than 6
and rotate through four 30 minute stations: grooming,
riding, horse chores and a craft activity teaching
horse care. Please wear the following: Long pants, sturdy
boots (or sneakers) and a riding helmet. Riders may borrow
a helmet from the stables if they don’t have one. Additional
registration form and waiver form is required for all
campers participating in Pony Camp!

CAMP LETTS
CAMP LETTS
FOR OVER 100 YEARS, CAMP LETTS HAS BEEN THE SUMMER PLAYGROUND
FOR CAMPERS FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD. EACH DAY AT CAMP YOU WILL
EXPERIENCE SOMETHING NEW: A NEW ACTIVITY, A NEW FRIEND, A NEW
CHALLENGE. WHATEVER IT IS, WE KNOW THAT EACH NEW THING YOU
DISCOVER WILL BE MORE EXCITING THAN YESTERDAY’S.
HOW DO WE KNOW? BECAUSE EVERY YEAR HUNDREDS OF CAMPERS
TELL US THAT THEY DISCOVERED SOMETHING NEW AND CREATED GREAT
MEMORIES AT CAMP LETTS.

ACTIVITIES FAIR
MEALS
Overnight Camp starts on Sunday
between 1:00pm and 3:00pm. During
your first evening, you will attend the
Activities Fair. Here, you will choose
the activities that will become your
morning schedule for the rest of the
week.
Have you seen anyone join The
Order of the Oar? Have you ever
eaten hands free cake on Super
Hero Monday? Or nearly forgotten
to eat* because lunch time suddenly
became an impromptu dance party?
It’s almost impossible to describe the
noise and fun of meal times.
Three times a day, your cabin
will shout and sing as you try to
outperform your rival cabins, all

of whom are competing for extra
points towards the Crew Cup, all
while eating food that seems too
good to be “camp food.” Many meals
have themes so make sure you pack
something pink, a pair of knee high
socks, and a tie-dye t-shirt.
*Don’t worry, our staff will make sure
you don’t forget to eat!

CAMP LETTS
OVERNIGHT
CAMP
AGES 6-16
At Camp Letts we have 3 goals for every
camper: try something new, make a new
friend, and have fun! We believe if a
camper can do the first two, having fun is
guaranteed.
MORNING ACTIVITIES
Your three morning activities are your
chance to acquire and master a new skill. So
try not to choose something you do every
day; pick something different and you might
discover a talent you never knew you had.
Programs are instructed by our diverse
staff. Selected from all over the world for
their experience and expertise, they will
help you learn, grow and have the time
of your life. In fact our great staff is the
reason many campers come back year after
year.
AFTERNOON CABIN AND
CREW ACTIVITIES
The afternoons are your chance to explore
all that camp has to offer. After Siesta, you
will go to activity period 4. Every day you
will be able to do something different.
The rest of the afternoon is spent in Cabin
and Crew activities. You will meet back
up with your cabin and catch up on your
morning activities before doing activities
together as a group.
Only time and imagination limit what you
and your bunk mates can achieve. It might
be jewelry making in arts and crafts,
kayaking on the river, building shelters in
the woods or exploring “Monster Island.”
The afternoon’s activities at Camp are
designed to be fun and recreational, and
an opportunity to get to know your bunk
mates.

EVENING ACTIVITY
When the sun starts to set, Camp
comes alive. We hold a camp-wide
activity or game each night, which ties
in to the weekly theme. It also uses as
many parts of camp as we can, so you
really get a chance to explore. Evening
games help your crew earn points
towards the Crew Cup.
TRY OUT OVERNIGHT CAMP
AGES 6-8
Specially designed for first time campers, this
two night, three day stay at camp is a great way
to explore all of the fun we have to offer.
Let your counselors take you and your bunkmates on a tour of just about everything we do.
Canoe, kayak or sail the Rhode River, try a pony
ride, learn a new sport and design a masterpiece
in Arts and Crafts. We’ll take you sea-sledding,
for a polar bear plunge at the pool, teach you
campfire songs, reveal the secret of making the
perfect s’more; all this while you make great
new friends!
