Provides long lasting control of many weeds
Formulated in an easy-to-use pellet
Can be used under a wide range of ornamental trees and shrubs
Recommended for many berryfruit types
General Information
PREFIX-D is a soil-acting herbicide, containing 67.5 g/kg dichlobenil in the form of a pellet, which is highly
effective against a wide range of broadleaf and grass weeds. Applied as directed, PREFIX-D will give longterm weed control (up to 6 months) depending on application rate, soil and climatic conditions. The higher
the application rate the longer the period of control. Weeds with some degree of resistance (e.g.
established couch and mature docks) can be spot treated when they reappear. For best results application
of PREFIX-D should be restricted to the colder, wetter times of the year (April-September), and before active
plant growth commences.
PREFIX-D is suitable for the selective control of weeds in established perennial crops such as forestry
plantations, cane fruit, bush fruit, pipfruit, around certain ornamental trees and shrubs, and for total residual
weed control on or around industrial areas, farmyards, buildings, fence lines, paths, driveways, leisure areas,
play grounds, and prior to laying concrete, asphalts and paving.
Mode of Action
The roots absorb dichlobenil, the active ingredient in PREFIX-D, with rapid translocation throughout the
plant. In susceptible species PREFIX-D inhibits actively growing meristems of both roots and shoots,
germination of seeds and damages rhizomes. It has no effect on cell respiration or photosynthesis, but
inhibits cellulose synthesis.

Apply PREFIX-D granules evenly to the area being treated. For cracks in
concrete and bitumen and joints in paving sprinkle on PREFIX-D and
brush in, then water in thoroughly with a fine mist spray. If treating slopes
or watering in, be careful that the pellets are not washed onto lawns or
areas where susceptible plants are growing.
Prior to sealing:
190-380 kg per
treated hectare
(19-38 g/m2)
Evenly apply PREFIX-D granules after formation of the area to be sealed
and prior to the application of bitumen. The granules may be incorporated
by mechanical means, or light overhead watering, in conjunction with the
final compaction.

Sprinkle PREFIX-D evenly onto the bedding sand before laying paving.
Following lying, but before compaction, mix PREFIX-D with dry sand and
sweep into the joints. Water in with a fine mist spray.

Raspberries,
Boysenberries,
Blackberries,
Loganberries,
Youngberries,
Dewberries
80-110 kg per
treated hectare
Apply as a band (at least 60 cm wide) over the row to established crops
prior to sucker emergence. If application is delayed until after bud burst
some sucker suppression on early raspberries will occur. Boysenberries,
loganberries and brambles are unaffected. Early application (prior to
August) is recommended in the case of raspberries to avoid this problem.
Blackcurrants,
Gooseberries
80-110 kg per
treated hectare
Apply as a band treatment. Treat only established bushes (at least two
years old). Apply prior to August.
Pipfruit
90-170 kg per
treated hectare
(9-17 g/m2)
Apply as a band along the row or encircling each trunk of mature trees (at
least 7 years old). Applications must be made prior to growth occurring
(before August). Younger trees may be safely treated in the season of
planting provided the soil around them is well settled. Some marginal
yellowing of foliage may occur (without affecting extension growth or yield)
where high rates are used on light soils followed by irrigation or when
drought follows application. Do not treat Golden Delicious apples or
grapes with PREFIX-D.
Ornamentals and
hedges
50-110 kg per
treated hectare
2
(5-11 g/m )
Light soil incorporation to a depth of 1cm is an advantage. Large areas
should not be treated without first establishing plant tolerance under local
conditions. Do not use PREFIX-D under azaleas, cotoneaster species,
escallonia, fuchsias, non-woody perennials or where seeds or seedlings
of annual plants are to be grown during the next two years.
PLANTS THAT MAY BE SAFELY TREATED INCLUDE: Abelia, acacia,
ash, banksia, bottlebrush, beech, birch, camellia, cedars, conifers,
cupressus, Erica, elms, grevillia, hakea, hebe, hibiscus, juglans nigra,
junipers, liquid amber, maple, magnolia, poplars, protea, rhododendrons,
manuka, viburnum and willow.
Note: Roses should only be treated during the dormant season.
Pasture weeds: Docks
Ragwort Thistles
Approximately
1/4 teaspoon
Apply as a spot treatment to the crushed centre of each plant.
Weeds Controlled:
Some of the common weeds controlled by PREFIX-D under temperate climatic conditions include:
Amaranthus, annual poa, barley grass, barnyard grass, black nightshade, bracken, bristle grass,
Californian thistle, Canadian fleabane, catsear, chamomile, chickweed, cleavers, cocksfoot, comfrey,
couch, creeping bent, creeping fog, dandelion, docks, fathen, fescue, fumitory, groundsel, hawkesbeard,
nettles, nutsedge, pale persicaria, plantains, poa pratensis, ryegrass, shepherd’s purse, sorrel, sow
thistle, speedwell, spurrey, summer grass, thistles, wild carrot, yarrow and Yorkshire fog.
Resistant Weeds:
Field bindweed, giant, creeping and bulbous buttercup, rushes, silverweed, sweet vernal, and white
clover. White clover and field bindweed can be controlled by spot application with a high dose.
Application:
For best results application of PREFIX-D should be restricted to the colder, wetter times of the year (AprilSeptember), and before active plant growth commences. Delayed application can reduce effectiveness
and control. In selective use situations the recommended dose rates and timing of application for
PREFIX-D must be strictly followed. As PREFIX-D is volatile it is advisable to either lightly incorporate or
irrigate treated areas if rain does not fall soon after application. For best results the ground should be
weed free and moist.
Apply PREFIX-D evenly by hand, shaker, Weed-A-Metre, or a suitable mechanical spreader. Apply only
to established crops. Ensure that granules do not fall, blow or get washed on to other areas than those
intended for treatment. Prevent granules from lodging on crop leaves or in axils. For this reason
treatments should NOT be carried out when rain is falling or the foliage is wet. Avoid local overdosing.

Drains:
Application to drains, ditches and irrigation channels must only be made when these waterways are dry,
and at least 2 months is allowed to elapse before the channels are used for carrying water.
Caution:
Apply only to established fruit trees and ornamentals. Prevent granules from lodging on crop leaves or
leaf axils. Do not use near grapes, citrus, stonefruit or in or near a glasshouse.
Rainfall/ Irrigation:
Rain or irrigation is required following treatment to move the chemical from the granules into the soil. As
PREFIX-D is volatile it is advisable to either lightly incorporate or irrigate treated areas if rain does not fall
soon after application.
Ornamental Trees, Shrubs and Hedges
PREFIX-D is absorbed primarily through the roots. Established trees and shrubs are generally not affected
because their roots are below the level to which PREFIX-D penetrates. Before treating large areas,
establish plant tolerance under local soil and climatic conditions by treating a small area as a trial plot. As a
GUIDE ONLY, the following plants have been established as tolerant to 44 kg per treated hectare
chlorthiamid [which converts in plants and soil to the herbicidally active dichlobenil (PREFIX-D)] in trials
conducted at Massey University.
