Enchanting Wild Taiga 14 - 17 January 2017
Pre Tour
This fascinating winter tour takes you to north-eastern Finland, to
Wild Taiga, to enjoy enchanting winter scenery and dark night skies
with no light pollution. On the tour, you will be presented winter
safaris with guaranteed departure dates, addressed to individual
clients and groups, as well as information about our summer
programmes. Tour highlights: world class chamber music, Europe’s
best wildlife photography sites, home of the Finnish identity,
national epic Kalevala, local lifestyle, small businesses and New
National Park Hossa, opening in June 2017 as part of the
celebration of Finland’s 100 years of independence.

Afternoon flight from Helsinki to Kuusamo. Reception of the pre tour
group by your tour host at the airport.
Transportation to Hossa (appr. 1hour)
Accommodation in the Jatkonsalmi log cabin in shared rooms.
Dinner and followed by sauna with ice hole swimming
Sun 15 Jan
Breakfast at the cabin.
After breakfast presentation of the Wild Taiga area and products.
An introduction to a variety of winter activities by Upitrek tour
operator incl. fat biking, snowshoeing and setting a campfire.
Reindeer sleigh ride in Hossa Reindeer Park followed by a lunch and
introduction of the Hossa Visitor Centre.
At dusk transfer along the Via Karelia travel route towards south, to Kuhmo.
Check-in at lakeside Hotel Kalevala in single rooms and dinner.
Possibility to relax at the wellness department of the hotel.
Mon 16 Jan
Breakfast at the hotel.
Morning hours with a cultural programme: visit to Petola, Information Centre
for large carnivores and visit to The Juminkeko Information Center for the
Kalevala and Karelian Culture where you will learn about the significance of
the epic Kalevala and Karelianism – the Finnish national romantic movement
of the 19th century – to the Finnish national spirit. A presentation of the
international Kuhmo Chamber Music Festival at the Kuhmo Arts Centre,

followed by lunch.
In the afternoon, tuition in cross-country skiing on the skiing arena next to
Hotel Kalevala followed by sauna and bathing in a lakeside bath barrel under
the starry sky.
Dinner at the hotel.

Flight from Kajaani to Helsinki.
(If afternoon flight at 13.35, then visiting en route the Vuokatti Husky farm for a
short sleigh ride and coffee break.)

Food
In case of any allergies/dislikes, please inform those in advance, while
meals are pre-ordered. In Finland the tap water is good quality and drinkable
even from the tap in the hotel bathroom.
What to take with you
To get an idea what the weather holds for the visit, we suggest you check the
website www.weather.fi (Suomussalmi, Kuhmo). We recommend you to wear
casual clothings, and take comfortable and warm clothings including a hat and
gloves, and a fleece/pullover is good to have also. And of course swimming
suit if you wish to try hotel’s spa or wellbeing facilities.
