Through hands-on activities, small class sizes, and challenging curriculum, students will gain new academic skills and confidence while enjoying their summer. This program is for students (male and female) entering the 7th or 8th Grade. The Holy Ghost Prep Summer Program welcomes all students regardless of race, color, religious beliefs, sex, or national or ethnic origin. Topics will include: word problems, operations, series and sequences, and certain algebraic and geometric ideas. Students will be able to select an advanced Math option. This is meant for students who already take honors or advanced math and are accustomed to a faster paced curriculum. Students will learn to use their computer as a resource for their education. By incorporating technology into each of their academic subjects, students will understand useful applications for the internet, word processing, web pages, databases and spreadsheets while learning the basics of computer programming. SCIENCE The Science Program is designed as an introductory laboratory experience. Through hands-on projects, students will learn important scientific theories while exploring the physical world around them. Basic biology and chemistry will be highlighted during these five weeks. ACTIVITIES The summer is not all work! Each day students will be given the opportunity to get outside and enjoy themselves in a variety of team and individual activities. Athletic Facilities include two soccer fields, an outdoor track, an indoor basketball arena, outdoor basketball courts, two baseball diamonds and the main athletic field shared by the Varsity Soccer and Lacrosse programs. The summer sports camps use all of these facilities, as well as the offsite facilities of the Bensalem Ramblers Baseball Complex and the Wissahickon Skating Club. Most clinics are designed for athletes between the ages of 6 and 15 (as of June 1, 2014). The minimum age for the baseball program will be age 8. All camps will be divided by age group and/ or individual skill level to help maximize the benefits of the week for each camper. Registration is available up to the day camp starts. Professional, college and high school coaches and players make up the staff that offers individual instruction at each position. This is assured by limiting the number of participants so that there is a six to one camper to counselor ratio. Guests over the last few years have included: Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Ryan Madson; Phillies General Manager Ruben Amaro Jr.; White Sox hitting instructor Jeff Manto and former MLB players Greg Gross and Steve Braun. Campers will compete in various baseball related events at the end of the week and top participants will receive awards. In addition to receiving a written evaluation at the end of the camp, each camper will be filmed and have his film analyzed one on one with one of the coaches. All campers should supply their own sneakers or spikes, gloves, caps and long pants. Past guests have included Saint Joseph’s University’s Phil Martelli, former Duke University All-American Bobby Hurley, former assistant coach of the Sacramento Kings Pete Carril, and Head Coach at Temple University Fran Dunphy. Campers should come dressed to play. We try to have a maximum of nine players on a team to ensure individual instruction. Awards will be given and each camper will have a personalized evaluation. Our goal is to help each player improve his or her skills and knowledge of the game and to help them be the best player they can be. Morning sessions will focus on individual instruction such as foot skills and small-sided play. The afternoon sessions will focus on futsal, team play and competitions. Players are required to wear shin guards and soccer cleats. Please dress appropriately for the warm weather. Sneakers should be packed and brought each day for activities in the field house. Coach John Mundy and high school coaches Hugh Mundy, Jim Bortz, Steve Harnish, and Chuck Lumio will instruct athletes in all areas of track and field. They will be assisted by Holy Ghost graduates and current track and field athletes, including Jeffrey Ainsley, ’11, a Decathlete HS All-American. The staff also includes female athletes from area girl’s high schools. Athletes will participate in the jumps, throws, sprints, hurdles, relays and distance events. Campers should come dressed to practice and compete. Grouped by age and gender, athletes will rotate through stations to learn about various events and topics. The daily schedule includes warm up activities, event explanation and skill practice, film study, discussions on various aspects of track and field including mental preparation, diet, rest, and an introduction to weight training.
