Newsletter of the
Mattapoisett Free
Public Library
Summer 2010
FROM THE LIBRARY DIRECTOR
STRATEGIC PLANNING COMMITTEE
Just in time for late spring and summer programs, the
Mattapoisett Library is reaching out with this newsletter to
each household. We want you all to be informed about
upcoming programs and library services. There is much
activity at your library these days! Verso is our opportunity to
be in touch with the residents of Mattapoisett and visitors.
In addition to the print copy, the newsletter can also be
emailed to those patrons with email addresses on file. If you
would like to get more frequent communications about
library news and program announcements, please email us
at [email protected]. We will be glad to add you to our list
of patrons in the know!
The library Board of Trustees and staff want to ensure that
our newly renovated library and the services provided therein
are meeting the needs of the Mattapoisett community. A
strategic planning committee of residents, Friends of the
Library, staff and Trustees was formed in January to
determine service priorities for the next five years. Two
community forums were held to get public input. In addition,
a reception is scheduled for June 23 at 7:00 PM to greet
summer residents and to hear their suggestions. Goals and
objectives will then be developed, and voted by the Board of
Trustees. The final document will be posted on the library’s
website and will be submitted to the Massachusetts Board of
Library Commissioners. Filing the library’s plan of service
with the state means the town will be eligible to apply for
state library grants for programs and services. We would like to
thank all the community members who participated in the forums.
I am eager to hear your thoughts about library service. Your
library is so much more than its growing collection of books.
Please drop by or feel free to contact me. I hope each of you
enjoys a healthy and book-filled summer,
Susan Pizzolato, Library Director
[email protected]
THANKS & BEST WISHES TO JAN BOLTON
Please join the library trustees and staff to say thank you to
Adult Services Librarian Jan Bolton who is retiring at the
end of June. A public reception is planned for Tuesday, June
29 at 6:30 pm at the library. Hopefully, many of you can
stop by and wish Jan well in her next chapter! She will be
greatly missed after serving the community for 18 years at
the library.
Library Board of Trustees
The Mattapoisett Free Public Library is jointly managed
through the efforts of the Library Director, the Board of
Trustees, and the Town Administrator. There are six elected
trustees, each with a term of three years. Currently serving
are Martin Hudis, Chair; Ruth Jolliffe, Vice-Chair; James
Dildine, Treasurer; Rachel Deery, Secretary; Mary Magee,
and Jennifer McIntire. With a beautiful new facility we are
engaged with the community in a strategic planning process
to ensure that services and resources meet our citizens’ needs
and expectations. The Board is very interested in new ideas
from all patrons and citizens, so please stop by and join the
excitement as we move into the future of library service!
MATTAPOISETT LIBRARY TRUST, Inc.
Thank you to our generous donors for your contributions in
response to our Annual Appeal and throughout the year!
Your gifts make it possible for the library to serve you better.
The Mattapoisett Library Trust, Inc., founded in 2001, is a
not-for-profit 501(c)(3) charitable organization dedicated to
expanding the role of the library in the community. The
Trust underwrites new programs, enhances the collection,
and enriches the library in areas that are beyond the normal
operating costs of the library. In addition, the Directors of
the Trust are establishing a permanent, managed
endowment fund. The income from the endowment will be
used to expand library services as described above.
Contributions to the Trust may be earmarked by the donor
for the endowment fund. Lifetime gifts or estate planning
legacies to the endowment are an ideal way to permanently
benefit the Mattapoisett Free Public Library.
This year the Library Trust provided financial support to
make improvements to the website, to purchase a
microscope, and to acquire databases for public use that
were beyond the scope of the regular budget. The funds
were also used to underwrite cultural programs for children,
young adults and adults throughout the year.

The Friends of the Mattapoisett Library, Inc.
From the President of the Friends
The Friends of the Mattapoisett Library was organized and
incorporated to increase public support for the library and to
supplement its educational and cultural services. The group
is a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) charitable corporation whose
purpose is to support library services, to promote the
enrichment and use of
library resources, to sponsor
educational and cultural programs and to focus public
attention on the library’s needs. The Friends’ Board of
Directors presently meets on the second Wednesday of each
month at 6:30 PM.
Over the years the Friends have contributed funds (raised
largely through membership dues and the annual book sale)
to support the library’s renovation, to purchase furniture,
equipment, and museum passes and to support adult and
children’s programming. Why not take a moment to join the
Friends of the Mattapoisett Library. Many of your friends and
neighbors have already joined, and we want you to help.
Elizabeth East, President
LIBRARY TOTE BAGS
The Friends have tote bags available for purchase on both
the upper and lower levels of the library. The tote bags are
$12.00 each and all proceeds collected will help support the

Junior Friends of the Library and the Council of Teen Advisors
Junior Friends
Council of Teen Advisors (CTA)
The Junior Friends of the Mattapoisett Free Public Library is
a group that aims to provide young people in the sixth grade
and older with opportunities for personal enrichment
through community service at the library. Membership is free
and open to any library cardholder who is a seasonal or yearround Mattapoisett resident. Just like the Friends of the
Mattapoisett Library, the Junior Friends group assists the
library by volunteering in many ways, including offering
programming and assisting with the book sale.
A dedicated group of students in grades 6 through 12 have
joined the Council of Teen Advisors (CTA) and meet
periodically with library staff to help shape the programs and
services for youth patrons. After developing a mission
statement and choosing service priorities, the students have
assisted in the strategic planning process and in
brainstorming more effective ways to reach out to their peers.
Young volunteers are needed to assist with library programs
including story times, crafts, teaching chess, computer skills,
sorting and stacking books for the annual book sale, helping
with the children's annual lawn games and summer reading
program, and promoting the use and enjoyment of our
beautiful library.

Visit the MFPL Aquarium
Thanks to Jen and Nathan Zieske, and Denise’s Pet Care
Center, visitors to the Children’s Department can now enjoy
our fresh water aquarium! It’s a work in progress, so take a
look this summer! How many fish can you spot?
In the month of April, the CTA members sponsored a
student art show, “A Gallery of Stars,” with the cooperation
of the ORRJHS and ORRHS art teachers. Student work in a
variety of media was displayed throughout the library.
Visitors to the show were asked to place a Post-It star beside
the pieces they especially enjoyed. By the end of the month,
the rooms were filled with star-spangled art work.
Other suggestions from CTA members include setting up a
college and career search kiosk, redecorating the young adult
space on the main floor, and developing the mezzanine for
young adult study and relaxation. Comfortable furnishings
and audiovisual equipment will be added.

INTERNET ACCESS AND COMPUTER USE
SAILS LIBRARY NETWORK
The Adult Services Department has five computers available
for Internet access. Patrons may use an Internet computer
for up to one hour per day by logging in using their User ID
number (located on the back of each patron’s library card).
A PIN, which is the last four digits of the patron’s telephone
number, is also needed. Staff members may not look up card
numbers, so please have your library card with you or on file
at the desk. The staff would be happy to assist with logging
in, with getting online and also with printing.
Please consult the User’s Agreement on the screen or ask for
the full Internet Policy at the circulation desk if you have
questions about library computer use or Internet safety.
As members of the SAILS library network, Mattapoisett
patrons can select materials from a database that holds more
than 2 million items including books, DVDs and videos,

notified by phone or email when the materials arrive. Let us
know your email address the next time you stop in!
Microsoft Office programs are installed for patron use, as
well as Ancestry.com and other programs. Users should
bring flash drives or CDs to save their work.
Materials outside of the SAILS network may also be
requested by clicking on the Virtual Catalog tab once in the

Would you or someone you know enjoy a visit from a
volunteer bringing library materials every few weeks? Would
you like a library volunteer to visit your parent or
grandparent and bring books? Call the library and let the staff
know about reading needs and interests. Volunteers can
bring books (including large print), magazines, DVDs, books
in CD and cassette, and other items. Delivery is available to
adults and children, whether permanently or temporarily
home-bound or living in a health care facility in the area.
Call 507-758-4171 to learn more about this service.
Volunteers at the Library
offering a helping hand!
Thanks to our great group of volunteers, the staff gets able
assistance with many tasks.
Orientations are held
periodically so that those interested in assisting can learn
about volunteer jobs and responsibilities.
Adopt-a-Shelf: In order to keep library materials neat and
in order, volunteers “adopt” a section of the stacks to shelf
read and keep neat. It’s a huge help when patrons and staff
go searching for materials!
Computer Tutors: Need some help learning how to use
email or navigating your computer or the web? A library
volunteer, supported by staff, will be happy to work with
you one-on-one or in a small group to help you gain skills
and confidence. Please call 508-758-4171 for an
appointment.
Some volunteers shelve, repair books, organize materials
for story hour and crafts programs or work on other
special projects for the staff. Some volunteers receive
credit as part of the Senior Tax Abatement Program.
Interested in helping out? Please ask the circulation desk
staff for a volunteer application form and the date of the
