Procedure:
1. Explain to your students what a diamante poem is. A diamante poem is an unrhymed 7lined poem. Tell your students that “diamante” is the Italian word for diamond. It is known
as a “diamond poem” because it is shaped like a diamond.
2. Explain to your students the rules on how to write a diamante poem and show them a
visual of a diamante poem:
Diamante poems are 7 lines long.
1. First line is 1 word (a noun).
2. Second line is 2 words (2 adjectives).
3. Third line is 3 words (3 verbs).
4. Fourth line is 4 words (4 nouns).

Noun – word used to identify a person, place or thing
Adjective – word used to describe a noun or a pronoun
Verb – word that describes an action
3. Tell your students that there are 2 types of diamante poems: synonym diamante poem and
antonym diamante poem.
In a synonym diamante poem, the nouns at the beginning and the end of the
poem are synonyms:
Kittens
Cuddly, soft
Purring, licking, prancing
Whiskers, fur, paw, tail
Meowing, scratching, snuggling
Cute, fluffy
Cats
In an antonym diamante poem, the nouns at the beginning and the end of the
poem are antonyms. For the fourth line on an antonym diamante poem, the
first 2 nouns should be related to the noun on the first line and the last 2 nouns
should be related to the noun on the last line:
Sun
Fiery, Yellow
Burning, Blinding, Exploding
Flame, Light, Night, Crescent
Shining, Orbiting, Reflecting
Cold, Silver
Moon
4. To start a diamante poem, ask your students to pick a topic they want to write about. The
topic has to be a noun (person, place, or thing). Explain to them that the diamante poem
starts with a noun (the topic).
5. Then ask your students to decide if they want to write a synonym diamante poem or an
antonym diamante poem.
6. Tell your students to make a list of adjectives, verbs, and nouns. If they are writing a
synonym diamante poem, make a list related to their topic. If they are writing an antonym
diamante poem, select another noun that is the opposite of their topic and make a list for
the 2 nouns.
7. Ask your students to write out their poem based on their list. Tell them to make sure that
the poem is centered in the middle of the paper to give it a diamond shape. Have them
create a Voki to recite their poem.
