3D Printing Competition Hosted by the American Society of Engineering Education Rules and Guidelines Goal Create an Aggie-themed design using CAD software, and 3D print your design for display and judging at E-Week community night. Entry requirements • Your design must relate to Utah State University in some way. Be creative! • Your design must fit into a rectangular prism with volume less than 6 in3. Put another way, if you multiply the largest dimension of your design in each direction (X, Y, Z) the product must be less than 6. For example, you may design something that fits within a 1.8” cube, or you could instead design something that fits in a 0.25”x6”x4” sheet, etc. This is a relatively small space, so make use of details. • Group submissions are allowed, but no person may participate in multiple submissions. • You are welcome and encouraged to get help from the 3D printing consultants, and other staff in the printing lab (IS 119). The lab is open Mon-Th 8am-10am, and Fri 8am-7pm, or can be contacted at [email protected] or 435.797.7898. • All submissions must be original work. • Models may not contain anything offensive or inappropriate. • The first 25 submissions may print their models at half price! To reserve your spot, send a preliminary design (CAD file and screenshot) to [email protected] with the subject line “3D printing preliminary design.” Judging process and criteria During community night, Feb 23rd, entries will be judged by an expert panel for technical merit and intricacy, and by the general audience for creativity and aesthetic appeal. These two scores will be normalized and averaged to determine the overall winners. Additional awards will be presented to the audience favorite, and best judged model. Submission procedures Entries must be completely submitted (including all steps) by 6:00pm February 22nd. Keep in mind that the printing process may take 4-5 days, so be sure to plan ahead. Step 1) Email [email protected] with the following: (subject line: 3D Printing submission) • A title and description for your design. (2 to 200 words) Feel free to be creative. • Your CAD file (from SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Autodesk Inventor, etc.) • A rendering or screenshot of your model. (.jpg, .png, etc.) Step 2) Print your design in the EED printing lab. To receive the half-price printing discount, please bring your files in person to the lab, and tell the consultant that you are participating in the 3D Printing Contest. Step 3) Bring your printed model to ENINV 104, and place it on the table in the middle of the room (between the two sets of cubicles), next to the label that matches your design. Note: After judging, the models will be returned to you. Questions If you have questions about the details of the available printers and materials, see the printing lab website (http://eed.usu.edu/1_students/student_resources/3-d_printing/3-d_printing-intro) or talk to the consultants in IS 119. If you have any questions about the competition structure and process, email [email protected]. Good luck! We look forward to seeing what you create!
