News and Homework for week beginning 16th January This week in Maths... We continued looking at fractions, learning and consolidating methods to compare and add/subtract fractions by converting them into equivalents. Some of us used equipment (math rods) to develop our understanding of fractions as part of a whole. During year 6 ‘Bikeability’, the rest of Owl class undertook a mini-project focused on statistics. We collected data about the heights of everyone in our school, drew tally charts and bar charts then used Excel to produce a line graph and further charts of our choosing. In English… We have focused on witnesses in our model newspaper article recount, firstly taking part in freeze-frame role play to consider the actions and feelings of the people involved in the event, followed by revision of inverted commas to punctuate direct speech when devised witness quotes of our own. Owls came up with lots of super synonyms for said which they also included in their writing! During year 6 ‘Bikeability’, remaining children studied a short film called ‘The Tiny Crusader’. They sequenced film stills, annotated, planned and wrote a retelling of the story in the first person as ‘Ulric the Blacksmith’. In other news... On Monday, we conducted a science experiment to find out which surface provided the best friction. Children developed their ‘working scientifically’ skills, devising their own test, choosing the variables to keep the same and those to change, read force meters, and recorded data. On Wednesday and Thursday, year 6 undertook their ‘Bikeability’ course and all passed successfully! Well done year 6. On Friday, we continued our DT heraldry topic when the children were able to create a mock-up of their design using coloured card. Lilly, for independent working and excellent focus and effort when writing her retelling of the ‘Tiny Crusader’ story. Keep it up Lilly! Homework: Please see below for homework this week. Remember to still log on and complete tasks on Mathletics, Spellodrome and Reading Eggspress. How many award certificates can you earn before the end of this term? Spellings: Please see separate sheet for list of words to be learnt this term. Spellings to be learnt this week are underlined in blue. There will be a review in class each Friday.
