June 2016 – Newsletter #8
________________________________________________________________
Administrators’ Message
And the count down is on! But depending on who you are, the countdown means something
different. Yes, it is June. And with June comes a whole new perspective to the school year.
There are a number of ‘wrap ups’ and traditional end of year activities.
First and foremost we need to mention that the Grade 7 Pike Lake Trip is in progress as I type!
It is only fitting that the Pike Lake trip gets special mention in our newsletter for it has been
taking place for over 40 years and is engrained in the culture of RCHS. We are still trying to
figure out who gets more excited – the students, the parents, or the staff? I am sure that
there will be some great stories once they get back on Friday. A special thanks to Mr. Carlson
and Mr. Cuff for taking on the organizing of the trip.
And for RCHS, the Pike Lake trip is the first of a number of events about to take place. On
Friday and Saturday we will be sending a team off to Provincial Track and Field. We then have
our end of year Music Concert on Wednesday June 8th @ 7pm. This is always a popular event
and people leave genuinely amazed at how far each Band has progressed over the course of
10 months. When the next week rolls around, the Theatre will once again be packed as we
hold the annual RCHS Awards Night on June 14th @ 7pm. We look forward to seeing all
honor roll students, award winners, and their parents pack the house. RCHS is fortunate to
have such great support from business and service groups who fund the scholarships which
are at the heart of the evening.
Then we get into exam week! Exams start on Wednesday, June 22nd. Until that date, there
are classes as normal for Grades 7-12. Once exams start on Wednesday there are no classes
for Grades 10-12. Grade 10-12 students will only be at school if they write an exam. For
Grades 7-9, students and parents need to keep a close eye on communication from the
teacher as to when they write a test and when they need to attend to complete a project.
Last, and definitely not least, is Grad 2016! At the start of this message I made the comment
that the countdown means something different depending on who you are. For some
students in Grade 12, they have been meeting the countdown with mixed emotions. Yes they
are excited to be done High School, but they are also regretting that they only have so few
days left. Either way, we are looking forward to honoring our Seniors at Graduation on June
29th.

First Day of School
SRC
For the month of May our SRC hosted HOJA on our annual Day of Awesome, made plans for
the End of the Year Extravaganza, and had SRC elections for the 2016-2017 school year. The
afternoon of Day of Awesome was filled with games, student and teacher performances, as
well as a student created video. Following this the HOJA group performed and included
some staff in their performance which lead to our very own Mr. Brodie Cuff, a past HOJA
member, singing the song “Sweet Dreams”. Over all the day was an awesome success, and
was enjoyed by the staff and students. As we approach the end of the 2015-2016 school year
the SRC is making plans to finish the school year off on a high note with our second End of
the Year Extravaganza. This is event was a huge success last year, and the SRC is looking
forward to another great turn out. Speaking of the school year’s end, the student body
recently participated in exercising their right to vote for next year’s SRC executives. In closing,
as this year’s SRC President and Vice-President we would like to thank you for an
unforgettable year and wish you and the 2016-2017 SRC the best in your future endeavors.

Music Department
Just a quick note from the music department of things; I wanted to let everyone know that
the Spring concert has been moved to Wednesday, June 8th at 7pm from the original date
on Thursday. There was a scheduling conflict with a junior football game and decided that
Wednesday the 8th of June would work. Students are to still show up at 6:30 to set up in the
library wearing their performance attire; black bottoms, white tops, and black accessories.
With the exception of Choir students wearing their performance blacks.
Also, for students taking band next year, just a reminder that from gr. 8 and onward, it is the
responsibility of the parent to look after purchasing or renting an instrument for your son or
daughter. Long & McQuade in my opinion have the best rental options and they have two
locations in Saskatoon just off Circle Drive and Millar on 43rd street, and a second location
on 8th street and Broadway. Students who play percussion, or large instruments like the
baritone/euphonium, baritone saxophone, or Tuba are not expected to rent from the city.
They can use the school's instrument at a cost of $50 per year which will be attached to your
student fees. But the best option is to buy or rent an instrument of their own as the
depreciation value of musical instruments is very small.

Heritage Fair
RCHS sent eleven students from grades 7 and 8 to the Saskatoon Regional Fair on April 27th
& 28th. Over the two days students were able to take part in a variety of workshops including
ones hosted by the Western Development Museum, Elections Saskatchewan, the
Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame, and the Saskatchewan Archaeological Society. Everyone
had a blast and we learned tonnes about how to improve on our Heritage Fair projects for
next year.
Of the 135 students that took part in the Saskatoon Regional Fair, only 20 awards were given
out. Our RCHS students took home four of those awards! Tyler Moore received the Canadian
Sports History Award for his project on the Stanley Cup; Connor Olivier received the First
Nations and Metis Heritage Award for his project on the Battle of Batoche; Diana Cerniuk
received the Genealogical Heritage Award for her project on her family’s history; and Dinithi
Mudalige placed 2nd overall for her
project on the evolution of the
Canadian
Immigration
Policy,
advancing to the Provincial Fair in
Regina held May 24th and 25th.
Congratulations to all of our students
who took part in the Saskatoon
Regional Heritage Fair! We are so
proud of the work you have done to
represent our school at the Heritage
Fairs!

Career Guidance Report – June, 2016
A. Grade 12 students are reminded to keep all correspondence from post-secondary
institutes in a safe, easy to find place so that all information is accessible. Deadlines
for registration of classes, payment of fees and so on must be adhered to. Failure to
meet deadlines could spell trouble for those who miss them. Seek assistance from
reliable sources when it comes to course registration:
- College or program advisors at the institute.
- Current student of that institute who is in the same program.
NEW
- Older siblings who have had similar experience.
- www.ratemy professor.com may help when selecting a class.
I strongly recommend that an advisor from the institute that you will be
registering at should be your 1st resource. Older siblings, friends or acquaintances
who have attended that same institute in the same program of study can also be
valuable resources. If you run into difficulties contact Mr. Gawletz to arrange for
some help.
B. Grade 12 students who have been conditionally accepted into a college or university
program for next fall will have to complete an “Online Request for High School
Transcript” form and send the completed form to Ministry of Education in Regina.
Most students have already completed this process at the time they applied.
NEW
Completion of this form arranges for a student’s final official marks to be sent to the
post-secondary institute that they will be attending in the fall. The cost is $20.00,
which can be paid online using a credit card. Students who fail to complete and send
this form will have their conditional acceptance revoked and they will not be able to
attend. See Mr. Gawletz if you need help with this very important final step of the
admission
process.
Students
must
go
online
at
http://www.education.gov.sk.ca/transcripts to find and complete the online form.
C. All Grade 12 students who are planning on attending the U. of S. next fall are invited
NEW to attend a 2 hour U. of S. class registration tutorial in the Sr. Computer Lab during
periods 2 and 3 on Tuesday, June 7. Those in attendance will get help from Mr.
Gawletz in setting up and registering for their classes for 2016-17.
D. Our annual Awards Night will be held on June 14 beginning at 7:00. Congratulations
in advance to all scholarship and bursary winners. The time and effort that you have
NEW
put into your academic successes, extra-curricular endeavors and/or community
volunteerism has not gone unnoticed. A huge thanks goes out to all businesses,
organizations and families who sponsor our local scholarships and bursaries. Your
support helps and rewards so many young people in our community.
E. Some students and parents have been asking about student loan applications. The
combined Saskatchewan Government / Federal government Student Loan application
NEW
can be found online at https://www.saskatchewan.ca/residents/education-andlearning/student-loans
F. Encounters With Canada (EWC) is taking applications for their 2016-17 program. Every
week throughout the school year EWC hosts over 120 dynamic young people aged 1417, who travel to the Terry Fox Youth Centre in Ottawa. The week costs each
NEW
participant only $675 which includes transportation to Ottawa, all meals,
accommodation and programming. To be eligible a student must be between 14 and
17 years of age. Students have a choice of one of 13 career-themed weeks offered at
various times over a 26 week period. This year we had Grade 12 students Hayley
Benjamin and Brendan Paproski attend and they reported back that it was a fabulous
experience. More information is available at the Guidance office or go online at
www.encounters-rencontres.ca.
G. A reminder of the Saskatchewan School Boards Association Education Scholarships.
Each year the association awards two $2,500 scholarships to graduating high school
NEW
students who plan to remain in Saskatchewan for post-secondary studies. One of the
scholarships is for a university bound student and the other goes to a student planning
to register at Sask. Polytechnic in the fall of 2016. Applications can be found online at
www.saskschoolboards.ca. Scholarship information can be found under About Us /
Awards. The deadline for applications is August 31.
H. Grade 11 students interested in full time programs offered at Great Plains College
may be eligible for the Grade 11 Early Entrance Awards valued at $1,000 each. This is
a unique scholarship that sees each applicant receive the $1,000 if they apply by June
30 of their Grade 11 year and then follow through and attend that program at Great
Plains College after they graduate the following year. The scholarship applies to most
of the full time programs offered at Great Plains College.
I. Great Plains College is currently accepting applications to the Practical Nursing
Program offered in Biggar. The Biggar program begins in February of 2017. The
Biggar application deadline is June 30, 2016.
J. I hope that everyone has a safe and enjoyable summer. I will be leaving the Career
Development Counsellor position at RCHS at the end of June, moving a little closer
to retirement. I’ve enjoyed the past 30 years in this position, it has been a very
rewarding experience. I thank all of those whose paths I’ve crossed as a teacher /
career counsellor at RCHS and ROSCHI. Every student and parent I’ve worked with
has added so much to my career journey. All of you have made it real easy to come
to work every day. I am so blessed to have had the opportunity to serve this
wonderful community.
