I PLEDGE ALLEGIANCE TO THE FLAG OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA AND TO THE REPUBLIC FOR WHICH IT STANDS, ONE NATION UNDER GOD, INDIVISIBLE, WITH LIBERTY AND JUSTICE FOR ALL. “AMERICA” (My Country, ‘Tis of Thee”) – arranged by Thomas Wallace. Lyrics by Rev. Samuel Francis Smith in 1831 while he was a student at Andover Theological Seminary in Massachusetts. First performed in pubic on July 4, 1831 at a children’s Independence Day celebration at Park Street Church in Boston. First publication of “America” was in 1832. “GOD BLESS AMERICA” – arranged by John Higgins. Words and music written by Irving Berlin in 1918 while serving the U.S. Army at Camp Upton in Yaphank, New York, but decided that it did not fit in a revue called Yip Yip Yaphank, so he set it aside. In 1938, with the rise of Hitler, Berlin, who was Jewish and a first-generation European immigrant, felt it was time to revive it as a "peace song," and it was introduced on an Armistice Day broadcast in 1938, sung by Kate Smith on her radio show. Berlin gave the royalties of the song to the God Bless America Fund for redistribution to the Boy Scouts of America and the Girl Scouts of the USA. “THE STAR-SPANGLED BANNER” – lyrics by Francis Scott Key, 1816 Oh, say, can you see, by the dawn’s early light, What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming, Whose broad stripes and bright stars, thorough the perilous fight O’er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming? And the rockets’ red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there, Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave O’er the land of the free and the home and the brave.
