United States History Chapter 19 WWI Reagan High School March 2, 2007 DUE DATE: TUESDAY MARCH 13th, 2007 Assignment: We will be studying chapter 19 and World War I as a class from March 2nd until March 13th with the intent to provide an outstanding look into this world changing event. You are receiving an educational opportunity to explore the first “Great War” through the creation of a portfolio project. Listed below are the specific steps and requirements that must be met to receive full credit on your portfolio. Grade: Your portfolio project will count as a graded assessment for all homework and 50% of your final chapter test. The rubric to base your final portfolio grade on is included on the back of this instructional handout. Please follow the complete instructions for your project and become familiar with the grading rubric. Instructions: Your portfolio will be placed and organized together beginning with a title page with the required specifications. The next three items in your portfolio will be from the mandatory list followed by three items from the optional list. Make sure these items are in order and neatly organized. All pages in your portfolio will be the size of a standard sheet of paper measuring 8.5 x 11 inches and will be stapled together at the top left corner of the portfolio. Include the following parts to your WWI Portfolio Title Page: The title page will contain the following information: Title (WWI Portfolio), Name, Date (March 13, 2007), and Period. All of this information will be centered in the middle of the page surrounded by a collage of drawings, photo’s, magazine or newspaper clippings, and any other visual aids that represent WWI (be creative). Mandatory List of Items: The following three items must be included in your portfolio (in order) to receive full credit. 1. WWI Newspaper article WebQuest: You will create a newspaper article based on instructions that you will receive in a WWI WebQuest. The following site will be used for instruction: www.highpoint.edu/~amosj05/amos Upon reaching this site click on WWI and it will link you to the WebQuest that you need to complete. We will set aside class time to visit the computer lab in order for you to receive an opportunity to complete this assignment. 2. Mapping Battles: On the map that was included follow these instructions: A. B. C. D. Color all Central Power Countries Yellow Color all Allied Power Countries Green Color all Neutral Countries Blue Mark the Following Battles with a Circle for Allied Victories: Ypres, Cantigny, Chateau-Thierry, Marne, St. Mihiel, Meuse Argonne. Make sure that you include the dates of these battles when you lable them on the map. 3. Find a political cartoon that is dated during the time period from 1914-1920. Make a copy of the cartoon from a book or print it off from a computer. Write a brief synopsis of the WWI political cartoon understanding why the artist created the cartoon and outline the basic suggestions portrayed in the cartoon. Optional List (you must pick 3 out of 5): 1. Diary of a soldier, civilian, or P.O.W. (prisoner of war): Using your knowledge of conditions in Europe during WWI complete a diary/ journal entry in 1st person that explains a day in the life of one of these individuals. No less than 1 page written or ½ page typed. 2. Menu for a day: Create a menu for a family of four using the correct social jargon for different foods (example: liberty cabbage). Make sure you take into consideration the rationing of certain foods by the government in order to support the war effort. Research the price of food at this time and place the correct price beside each item on your menu. Include breakfast, lunch, and dinner. 3. Design a war bond poster: In order for the U.S. to support a war in Europe the finances had to be right. Research war bond posters during WWI and create your own on an 8 1/2 x 11 inch sheet of paper. Make sure you use a catch phrase and be creative but historically accurate. 4. Timeline: Create a timeline beginning with the causes of WWI and ending with the signing of the Treaty of Versailles. You must include at least 6 main events on your timeline. Label the events A, B, C, D, E, and F; below the time line list the events by letter and briefly explain the who, what, when, where, and why of each event. 5. Super Duper Venn: Create a complex Venn diagram following the example below. Use the leaders Wilson, Clemenceau, and Loyd George as topics for each circle. Place the opinions of each leader in the correct circle on how they wanted to finalize the end of WWI with war reparations and world politics. How did they differ? How did they agree?
