Cubist Still Life in 3-D Objective: To create a 3

Cubist Still Life in 3-D
Objective:
To create a 3-D sculpture representing strong 3-D Design principles and
Cubist Still-Life elements using cardboard, paper-mache, and acrylic paint.
Introduction Cubism:
Watch the following video to prepare for this project and became familiar
with Georges Braque and the Cubist Still Life, 1928--1945
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yx34VewJ0bU
2. Before you begin your own work, answer the following 6 Essential
Questions about Cubism in your sketchbook. Note, you will need to do
some additional research:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
Where, when, and why did Cubism first emerge?
List two of its main artists?
What makes a work of art Cubist?
What is the difference between the 2 types of Cubism?
Which common objects did Cubists prefer to show?
Which color schemes are dominant in Cubism?
Planning:
1. Before you are ready begin sketching out your ideas in your sketchbook,
answer the following 4 Essential Questions about your Cognitive Process:
1. Which objects will you choose? (minimum of 3)
2. If your objects are not typical Cubist objects (musical instruments,
dishes, fruit, etc), how can you still give them a Cubist look?
3. How will you create unity? In other words, what makes your objects
seem like they belong together?
4. How will you make the display surface/ground interesting and not
just flat?
5. In what way will your objects and surface read Cubist? How is it
different from a regular still life?
Practice:
Before you begin with the physical creation of your 3-D still life, make sure
you have a plan. Watch these two youtube instructional videos:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vwoEie62LEw
Now, answer these 4 Essential Questions about your building technique
and materials:
1.
2.
3.
4.
Which method will you use to build your “structures”?
Which supplies will you need to use?
How will you ensure your final work is neat and well executed?
Do you have other ideas (materials or techniques) about the
construction process you would like to try or incorporate? Do you
plan on bringing in additional materials? Which?
5. Will your cardboard sculpture be in need of paper-mache to seal
edges or corners and to make it more structurally sound?
6. What is your color choice for this project? Why? How does your
choice relate and enhance the idea/concept for your particular
scuture or Cubism in general?
Pre-Production:
Before you begin the actual creation process, you need to discuss your
ideas and plans with the instructor for approval.
Production:
Have fun and remember to ask for help if needed! Keep in mind that for
this project strong building technique is more important than your
concept/idea.
