4-1-16 - Maclay School

4-1-16 E-mail Blast
Dear Parents,
When this time of year approaches, it always seems to signify to me that school is
nearly over. It is hard to believe that this year has flown by so quickly! These last
nine weeks will continue to bring many new activities and new learning adventures.
Your wonderful children continue to do such a fantastic job, so let’s continue to work
together to keep that same momentum going through the end of the year!
Change for a Children's Chance
The Lower School Student Council is sponsoring a coin drive benefiting the Children's
Home Society. Lower School students are encouraged to bring in any loose change to
help us fill our change bottle. The collection bottle will be in the Commons from March
24-April 8. Thank you in advance for helping us support children in our area!
Math-EQ: How can we show how numbers are related to each other?
Last week we used a traditional method to introduce long division. This week in math, we
will continue practicing long division using the “Standard” method using three digit
numbers with and without remainders, learn how to interpret remainders, and learn a new
algorithm called “Partial-Quotient Division.” Below is the link to Khan Academy that you
might find useful. While it is a bit lengthy, it compares the two methods and explains how
to use partial quotient. Knowing the basic multiplication facts is at the root of any method
of division. We cannot stress enough how important it is too continue to work with your
child on knowing these facts.

Science-EQ: How have the forces on Earth changed its surface as we know it today?
We are quickly moving along in Science. Thank goodness today was a beautiful, sunny day!
We had a fun and educational trip to the caverns in Mariana. We learned so much about our
planet and what is right under our feet! The lunch at Pizza Hut was delicious, and a great
time was had by all. We are almost finished with Lesson 2, and will have a quiz next
Thursday 4/7. Then, we will begin the last chapter in this unit titled: Slow Changes to
Earth’s Surface,” which will focus on weathering, erosion, deposition, and mountain
building.
Social Studies-EQ: Who were the winners, who were the losers as Florida became a
part of the United States?
Strawberry Girl has allowed us to take a look at Florida's citrus industry, appreciate the
impact trains had our state's development and agriculture, and compare today's school
situations with the strawberry schools of the past.
Reading-EQ: How is fiction like life? Which characters do you relate to and why?
This week in reading class, the students continued to read the novel James and the Giant
Peach. They are once again enjoying their literary groups and interacting and sharing with
each other!
Grammar: Unit4, Lesson 34:
This week we will be studying “Prepositions and Prepositional Phrases”. The students will
learn that a preposition is a word that shows how a noun or pronoun is connected to some
other word in the sentence. Next week, we will focus on “Pronoun-Verb Agreement.”
