M saic 2015-2016 Internship A Vision For Mosaic Mosaic is a brilliant and unique art form. Taking broken or useless pieces from various sources, an artist purposefully crafts them together to form something new, whole, and beautiful. God’s work is similar, in that God is taking our brokenness and making us whole. In addition, God is piecing us together with other people to form the church community. As a mosaic is composed of an array of unique pieces, so too is Mosaic Church of Clayton. It is a community of people from different walks of life, ethnicities, and journeys. We are a collective body in awe of seeing brokenness made whole by the love of God in Christ Jesus. For the last four years, our innovative and emergent church start has connected with the greater area of Johnston and Wake counties in North Carolina. We are a relational expression of the church that desires to connect deeply together in community and meet people where they are. We believe that the purpose of community is to strengthen each other through mutual living and to create an environment of belonging for all. This community vision takes form in the day-in-and-day-out interaction through like-interest groups, home-based discipleship groups, and informal gatherings. For many adolescents and young adults, college is a difficult time to explore and find reassurance in a call. The internal and external pressure to choose a “significant” or “practical” major to fall back on (if ministry does not work out) can be a frustrating obstacle to overcome. In addition, many sensing a call are not even afforded the opportunities to participate in ministry until undergoing graduate-level theological education. At Mosaic, we believe that the earlier someone experiencing a call can explore, engage, and find support in pastoral experience, the more formed he or she will become. This was the experience for Mosaic’s pastoral staff, whose members each also sensed a call during their teenage years. It is therefore, close to the heart of our vision. Since we are an innovative and emergent expression of the church, we desire to offer an opportunity for students to engage in ministry in a capacity that is not commonly found in our context. Internship Nuts & Bolts Mosaic is dedicated to cultivating a community that takes an active role in their spiritual growth and growth of God’s Kingdom. God is not passive, and neither are we. These internships will encompass three broad areas, pastoral leadership, worship, and community engagement, with several responsibilities and expectations under each. Each intern will be expected to 10-12 hours a week with Mosaic. Pastoral Leadership Within pastoral leadership, the interns have the opportunity to participate and learn about pastoral care through one-on-one coaching with a Mosaic minister, reading materials, and “as they arise” crisis and needs-based ministry. As a pastoral leader, the interns will be coached and guided to writing and delivering a sermon to the Mosaic community once a semester. The interns will also participate in monthly pastoral staff meetings and share his or her creativity and voice to our worship planning (through worship order, song selection, participant selection, worship reflections, and themes). By the end of the internship, the interns will have developed pastoral leadership and be confident in his or her ministerial skills and pastoral communication. The pastoral interns would be expected to meet all responsibilities described under project activities and methodology. The interns will be viewed as a pastoral staff member and be given voice, creative freedom, and help when needed. The intern will have opportunities to learn with, and from, the pastoral staff, and be expected to participate in coaching sessions. Engagement This is what we refer to as the process of taking a first-time Mosaic guest to a full-time community participant who’s learning and using his or her individual gifts for the Kingdom. The Pastoral Internship Grant will enable us to strengthen our engagement process by allowing the intern to assume leadership in this area and apply his or her creativity and passion. By providing leadership in this area, this will increase our ability to build stronger community through the discovery and utilization of our people’s God-given strengths. In essence, our engagement process is designed to strengthen individuals’ spiritual health so that they are able to recognize and take action in regards to the needs around them. For example, through the process a Mosaic member may be guided and supported in efforts to use personal carpentry skills to serve and organize home-repair efforts that help families that cannot afford to hire someone. This process may also help this member realize that he is gifted in areas of teaching, so he or she begins to teach others how to complete simple repairs to support their families. The engagement component empowers one person to empower others. The plan to strengthen the engagement process is three-fold: • First, the intern will work with the pastoral staff to clearly define and implement an innovative system within our Guest Services component to communicate and respond to the needs of visitors and newer members (having attended 3-5 Sundays). This will focus on exploring the experiences of individuals of varying faith journeys as they encounter the Mosaic community. • Second, through ongoing collaboration with Area Coordinators, the intern will organize an evolving-needs assessment that will allow for an efficient match of needs and skilled church members. • Lastly, the intern will further develop and implement “Gifted Sunday” programs that will encourage members to discover and develop their strengths and to use them within the greater collective vision set forth by God and Mosaic. The intern will invite guests to our bi-monthly Gifted Sunday sessions and will co-lead a two-hour guided discussion focused on helping attendees discover their individual gifts and how they can use them in the community and for the Kingdom. By attending to these three areas, the engagement process will be fruitful in providing members with the means to discover their interests and strengths and to use them within the greater collective vision set forth by God and Mosaic. The intern will invite guests to our bimonthly Gifted Sunday sessions and will co-lead a two-hour guided discussion focused on helping attendees discover their individual gifts and how they can use them in the community and for the Kingdom. Next, the intern will make sure that each Gifted Sunday participant is connected with a Mosaic community coach, who then helps participants connect with Area Coordinators to become involved and use their own creativity and leadership. Additionally, the intern will colead Coordinator meetings and encourage coordinators to reach out to new members of the community within their respective areas of interest. The intern will help empower and guide the community of Mosaic to reach its full potential for the Kingdom. While facilitating an opportunity for a person to discover and then engage his or her giftedness, this process begins with an individual’s first interaction with Mosaic. This focus area of the internship will be in our Guest Experience component. • How does someone discover Mosaic? • • What is their experience like from the time he or she walks in the front doors of our facility until he or she departs after worship? How are we following up with guests and engaging them further? These are all the questions that center on our Guest Experience component. This will be a vital component to the internship, as the intern discovers how and why people engage church in 2015. Not only will the intern bring creativity to how guests experience a Sunday gathering of Mosaic, but he or she will also learn the skills of listening and engaging sojourners. There will be a practical leadership factor to this area of focus, as the intern leads a group of 25 greeters, equipping and empowering them to best serve guests, importing guest information into Mosaic’s database and sharing this data the pastoral staff. The intern will meet with Mosaic’s greeters monthly to troubleshoot issues in hopes of creating a sense of excitement for people’s initial and subsequent impressions of our community. Worship These days, worship looks, sounds and feels different from church to church. Mosaic offers a relaxed atmosphere to worship God through music, prayer, reflection and community interaction. Yet we believe that the real worship that God desires is the way we live out the Kingdom of God each day of our lives. We are passionate about facilitating a worshipful experience for members and guests through the various elements of our time together on Sunday mornings. In our rich four-year history, worship has been lay led by members of our community. The worship team has matured and developed to offer a different experience each week. The internship will facilitate the opportunity for the student to learn from and develop the worship experience. The plan to strengthen the worship component is three-fold: • First, the intern will work with the pastoral staff to creatively plan worship around the teaching schedule and liturgical calendar. Each week offers a new experience through song, contemplative elements, and teaching. • Second, the intern will enhance the development and leadership of the worship team through practice and coaching. Working alongside the worship coordinator, the intern will also lead the team during Mosaic’s Sunday worship gatherings and organize the worship team into various sub-groups. • Lastly, worship planning goes beyond the set order of a service by extending into the atmosphere and experience of the Sunday morning gathering as a whole. The intern will provide leadership to the audio/visual setup and production, as well as other elements that enhance the worship experience. Internship Support Network Our pastoral staff has a rich experience with leadership coaching. We’d like to instill this catalyst of support within the internship by providing a pastoral leadership coach. This aspect of the relationship will center on a monthly and/or as needed gathering with the intern and coach, focusing in on the following points: • • • • Development and leadership goal setting (to be created together by the coach and intern) Professional, spiritual, emotional, and ministerial support Budget maintenance Theological and spiritual exploration, through conversation and written reflection Through relationship and reflection, the success of this initiative will be measured by the pastoral, ecclesial, and leadership development of the intern. In short, we want the intern to walk away educated, edified, equipped, and empowered for his or her next chapter of ministry. The internships will also include attending the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship’s ChurchWorks conference, February 21-25, in Asheville. ChurchWorks is designed to provide a learning and developmental experience for ministers of different capacities through large group workshops, small group conversations, worship, and networking sessions. Registration, travel, meals, and lodging will be covered by Mosaic. In addition, the internships will attend the Forum for Theological Exploration’s (FTE) annual internship conference. FTE has provided the financial support for this internship. Logistics Working Hours Each intern will be expected to 10-12 hours a week with Mosaic. An increase or decrease of hours one week should result in an altering of hours the following week so as to keep the appropriate average of hours worked. Interns should plan ahead in regard to hours worked for special events and trips. During these events there is sometimes a need for an intern to work more hours than their usual weekly average. Interns should anticipate this situation and, ideally, an intern should adjust their hours in the weeks prior to the event (i.e. work fewer hours) in order to accommodate the increased hours that the intern will work during the special event or trip. Salary & Benefits Each internship will pay $5,500, with an additional $300 mileage reimbursement available. Mosaic will cover the cost of developmental resources, ChurchWorks conference registration and travel, as well as FTE internship conference for the intern. Funds have been budgeted to cover incidental expenses incurred during an internship. These funds are based on the intern’s responsibilities and hours worked per week. Some common expenses are meeting-related expenses (e.g., coffee with students), mileage driven to a retreat or conference registration. These expenses can be reimbursed and require a receipt. An intern can also raise additional funds for his or her salary. Sharing the vision of the internship with family, friends, and mentors is a great way for an intern to expand his or her role and support. Resources for fund-raising are available through Mosaic.
