Join the Friends on the
2016 Moultonborough House Tour
Under the leadership of President Jane Harrington, the Friends of the
Moultonborough Library invite you to
participate in the 2016
Moultonborough House Tour on Wednesday, June 22nd. This year’s
eagerly awaited tour will showcase four lovely homes as well as visits
to a charming Center Harbor B&B and the highly anticipated New
Woodshed Restaurant. Tickets will cost $40, payable by cash or check,
and will be available for purchase at the Moultonborough Library or Bayswater Books in Center Harbor, beginning May 20th. All necessary information regarding property locations and directions will be included
with the ticket purchase. The homes and Inn may be visited in any order between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. The
Woodshed will graciously offer ticketholders a view of the new restaurant only between the hours of
10a.m. and 3p.m.
The Friends are also looking for volunteers who would be willing to serve as hostesses for the House Tour.
Volunteers would serve on a morning or afternoon shift allowing them to participate in the actual tour. Volunteers will be offered a ticket at half price. Men who would be interested in directing parking at the various residences are also needed. All you need is a folding chair! Please contact Jane
or Linda if you are interested.
This year raffle tickets will also be available for purchase at some of the residences
on the tour as well as the Moultonborough Library on pre-tour Saturdays. Local
merchants have generously donated gift certificates for this
year’s raffle. Raffle tickets are available for $5 for one ticket
or $10 for 3 tickets. Help support the library and win a great
prize! Winning ticket holders will receive their prizes by mail after the tour.
The House Tour is the Friends’ major fundraising event in support of the Moultonborough Library. Monies raised support cultural and educational programs for adults and
children; and also provide the library with supplemental funding for additional furnishings, equipment, collection materials and seasonal activities.
Mark your calendar. Volunteer if you can. Enjoy this special event and help the Friends support our library!

President’s Corner—Jane Harrington
On behalf of the Friends of the Moultonborough Public Library, allow me please to wish
you all a Happy Spring. It is also a perfect opportunity to remind you to get reacquainted
with the library, reconnect with old friends and to take advantage of all the wonderful and
varied programs being offered.
This year just happens to be the 30th anniversary of the founding of our organization. I can think of no better
way to celebrate this watershed year than by attending the ever-popular Library House Tour. The plans for this
biennial event are well underway and we have some lovely homes to view. Please tell your friends and neighbors
to join you as well. The House Tour will take place on Wednesday; June 22, from 10 to 4 p.m.
This event also needs many helping hands to maintain its successful reputation. We are therefore looking for
more volunteers to help act as hostesses and parkers for either a morning or afternoon shift. Please let me know
if you are interested in helping by calling me at 253-6999.It really is a wonderful experience to be part of this
community highlight and most important Friend’s Fund-Raiser. (FYI…workers get discounted tickets at half the
price to see the other homes)
ONE BOOK ONE
CHILD
Through the “One
Book, One Child” program
each child in the Moultonborough Central School
receives his or her own
personal copy of a book. A bookplate in each book
designates that it is a gift from the Friends. The goal
of the One Book One Child program is to encourage
school-aged children to take advantage of all the
wonderful resources available at the Moultonborough Public Library and to promote literacy in our
community.
Working with the teachers and the librarian at the
school, the Friends selected titles for the children and
delivered the books to the school on March 4th. In
all, 216 books were purchased. Grade 1 students received Finding Winnie: The True Story of the World’s
Most Famous Bear by Lindsay Mattick; Grade 2 received Diva and the Flea by Mo Willems; Grade 3 received Appleblossom, The Possum by Holly Goldberg
Sloan; Grades 4 and 5 received The Marvels by Brian
Selznick; and Grade 6 received This Side of Wild by

Literary Discussion Series, Spring 2016
Iconic Characters
Susan R. Merrifield
Tom Sawyer, Huck Finn, Pollyanna, Atticus Finch—these fictional characters are
part of the fabric of American popular culture. Even if you have not read the books they inhabit, you know
who they are and recognize them as symbolic of personality types. This year, we will have the opportunity to
share literature that contains similarly iconic characters; these are people who are simultaneously larger
than life yet part of our shared humanity. Some of them, such as Hester Prynne, live isolated lives; others,
such as Janie Crawford and Malcolm X, are very much part of the communities in which they live. What they
have in common is that all of them transcend the boundaries of their time and place.
As you look at this list of books, you may recall that you read these texts in high school or college. Now you
will view these characters from the perspective of a mature adult. The three selections for Spring 2016 will
be discussed on Thursday mornings at 10:30 on April 2, May 26 and July 28.
April 28, 2016: The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath
Some literary critics consider Esther Greenwood to be the female Holden Caulfield because, like Holden, she is disillusioned and depressed by the people (both peers and
adults) she encounters in her rarified young adulthood in Post WW II East Coast America.
A suicide by thirty, the novel’s author, Sylvia Plath is strangely enough a feminist icon. Dr.
Linda Brion-Meisels, Professor Emerita of Psychology at Lesley University in Cambridge,
MA will lead this discussion of the talented, yet alienated, Esther Greenwood.
May 26, 2016: The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald
In Jay Gatsby, the reader meets a mysterious millionaire who gives fabulous parties that
he does not attend. Gatsby is obsessed romantically with a young woman, Daisy Buchanan, who symbolizes all that was dazzling, exciting and doomed about the Roaring Twenties. Gatsby’s world in which the rich get richer and the poor are invisible seems alternately part of the distant past and somehow strangely familiar. Join Mary Hays, the critically
acclaimed author of Learning to Drive, in our discussion of the enigmatic Gatsby.
July 28, 2016: The Autobiography of Malcolm X as told to Alex Haley (author of Roots )
Although he was assassinated over a half century ago, the name Malcolm X still has strong
associations. We still wonder who this iconic American was—this man who died young but
not before he inspired both fear and admiration in hundreds of thousands of his fellow
Americans. Educated in the schools of Roxbury, Massachusetts and the streets of Harlem,
Malcolm X came to symbolize what was considered missing from the non-violent, Gandhiinspired Civil Rights Movement of the 1950’s and 60’s. Please join Dr. Suzanne Brown of
Dartmouth College in a discussion of this canonical text.

CHILDREN’S ROOM EVENTS
SHARON GULLA
CHILDREN’S LIBRARIAN
Our younger patrons have had several fun events to enjoy in the
last few months, starting with a celebration of A.A. Milne’s
birthday in January, when we decorated cupcakes in the image
of Milne’s famous characters, Winnie the Pooh, Piglet, and
Tigger. In February, little girls and their dolls or stuffed animals
enjoyed a Valentine Tea Party, and in March, we had 150 participants in the annual Easter Egg Hunt. Thanks to the great volunteers who filled and hid over 1200 eggs. We
also celebrated “Take Your Child to the Library Day,” and I attended Literacy Night at the Central School
and talked about our book discussion groups for children and adults.
Story time continues weekly as well as Lego Club, Read A Thons and special craft events. I am so grateful
for the purchase of the Ellison machine, I use it for a variety of crafts, community outreach and bulletin
boards.
I recently started a Book Discussion for Second Graders and had an overwhelming response with 21
students participating. My plan is to follow this year’s students to Third Grade and continue with Second
graders as well. New toys were purchased for our littlest patrons and they are in constant use! A very
generous donation of Snap Circuits and Nano Bugs have been a huge hit as well with the older children.
I am working on new STEAM kits, which will be available for checkout.
Looking forward to Summer Reading, the theme is On Your Mark, Get Set, Read! A sports and fitness fun
filled program! Some activities planned include a magic show, live animals, a sing a long, Health Circus,
stories and movies. Thank you for supporting the Children’s Programming in so many ways.

TRUSTEE REPORT
Laurie Whitley
Library Board of Trustees Chairperson
Two new Library Trustees were elected at the town election in
March. We are very pleased to welcome Sally Bartlett and Jeanie
Lacey to the Board. Both newly elected officials bring energy and skills
to the Board which will greatly benefit the Library. At the same time,
we said good-bye and thank you to our beloved Trustee, Barbara Sheppard. Barbara has served MPL as
Trustee for 8 terms (24 years ). During her time on the Board, Barbara was both Treasurer and the Library
representative to the ABC committee. We are grateful to Barbara for her incredible service and devotion
to the library.
Many thanks to Town Meeting for their favorable vote on the 2016 budget. It is gratifying to receive such
support from the legislative body of our town. The Trustees take their fiscal stewardship responsibilities
very seriously and are grateful to the taxpayers of Moultonborough for their ongoing financial support of
our mission.
Soup ‘n’ Sweets
We want to say a huge "thank you" to each and every one who
attended or participated in the annual Soup 'n’ Sweets Luncheon
held recently at our library!! This "Friends" event attracted more
than 130 folks on Friday, March 18th, which is a new record! We
had 13 crock pots full of soups, chowders and chili and just the
right amount of delicious dessert goodies to share! Everyone
seemed to enjoy the light lunch while meeting their friends and
neighbors!
We all look forward to next year's event!! No doubt about it, the "Trustees", the "Friends"
group, and the wonderful staff of the Moultonborough Public Library are the BEST--and we owe it all
to the support of our community! Our most sincere thanks for making our successes possible! Hope
to see you all at the "Chocolate Fare" in the Fall!

On Monday July 18 , at 7pm Liz Charlebois, Education Director of the Mt. Kearsage Indian Museum, will lecture
on the History of the Abenaki Indians. This presentation will bring a new perspective of the vastness and richness of
Native American culture that not only includes New Hampshire, but most of New England and eastern Canada.
On Monday, August 1, at 7pm, Ramblin' Richard presents Songs and Stories of World War II: Popular Wartime
Songs and their Stories You Didn't Know. Richard, a retired professor, tells the stories and sings the songs while accompanying himself on guitar, 5 string banjo and baritone ukulele.

Library Director’s Report
Nancy McCue
Thank you to everyone who voted for our library budget at Town meeting in March. With
this new budget we were able to increase AnneMarie’s hours, so she is now a full-time employee. Her official job title is Library Associate- Technology. She has become an invaluable
resource for both the staff and patrons at the library. AnneMarie teaches classes on various subjects, including iPads
and iPhones, android smart phones, apps, Windows 10 and Social Media. She also is available for one-on-one consultation.
When we began our Coloring and Confections for Grownups program at the end of February, it was going to be
meeting once a month. But the participants are so enthusiastic they have been meeting every week. So if you’d like to
join them, stop by the library on any Tuesday morning, 10:30-12n. We have many designs to choose from and dozens
of pencils, markers and pens. Everyone is very generous in sharing supplies and ideas, and Sue makes delicious
sweets!
We’re looking forward to a lovely, warm spring and summer here at the library. We have quite an assortment of
programs planned for the next few months. On Thursday, April 21, at 10:30am, local chef and foodie Barbara Lauterbach will teach us How to Make Homemade Pasta. Barbara will also speak (from personal experience) about the
regional differences in traditional cooking in Italy. In conjunction with this program and the Moultonborough Recreation Department’s trip to the North End on May 10th, the library staff invites everyone for a Taste of Italy on Friday,
April 22, 2-4pm. Come try free samples of cucina italiana.
On Friday, April 29th at 10:30am we will be Painting Wine Glasses. We supply the glasses and paint markers, you
supply the artwork. (No artistic talent is necessary!)
On Friday, May 6th, Mystery Writer and Humorist Neal Sanders will present Gardening is Murder, which he describes as a husband’s viewpoint of gardening, “filled with humor and insight from someone who gardens less from an
abiding love of horticulture than for the love of a spouse.” His talk is drawn from essays in his widely read blog: “The
Principal Undergardener.”
We are again co-sponsoring a NH Humanities Council program with the Moultonborough Historical Society. On
Monday, May 9th at 7pm, former history teacher George Morrison will lecture on Vanished Veterans: An Illustrated
Introduction to NH's Civil War Monuments and Memorials, Art & Architecture, History & Memory.
In June we will begin our American History Lecture Series with former National Park Ranger Mike McKinley. The
schedule: June 7: A Fast Ship in Harm's Way: John Paul Jones and the Cruise of the USS Ranger November 1777-May
1778. June 14: Robert Rogers of the Rangers. June 21: A Sad and Terrible Blunder: Custer, the Battle of Little Bighorn,
and its Aftermath. All programs are on Tuesdays at 10:30am.
On June 29 at 7pm, the Friends will host a program sponsored by the NH Humanities Council: Songs of Old New
Hampshire. The very talented Jeff Warner offers the songs and stories that, in the words of Carl Sandburg, tell us
"where we came from and what brought us along."
On July 7, at 7pm, we will continue with another NH Humanities Council program: Who Won the War of 1812?
NH’s Forgotten Patriots. Historian J. Dennis Robinson offers an upbeat, often irreverent, slideshow on NH's reluctant
role in "Mr. Madison's War" with special emphasis on the bold privateers who swarmed out of the state's only seaport.
Chef and gardener Liz Barbour returns for another wonderful cooking demonstration. Her program Cooking and
Gardening with Edible Flowers will be on Friday, July 15, 10:30am.

MEMORIAL BOOK DONATIONS
Have you considered giving a gift of books or a donation to the Library Memorial Fund as a way to mark a
significant occasion? What a wonderful method for
a community member to honor that special someone
as well as to reaffirm the excellent quality of the work
done by the library staff and trustees. A donation to
the Library, whether due to the sadness of a bereavement or to commemorate a happier occasion such as
a birthday or anniversary serves a dual purpose. It
acknowledges that special person or occasion and, of
course, enhances the library's ability to provide additional material to our patrons who will appreciate
these gifts for years to come. It is truly a gift that
keeps on giving.
