Afternoon Break Out Session
5. Making Connections. Using the Identity
of Low German Children as a Tool for
Engagement. Donna Pardy will share the
process whereby Low German speaking
children worked together to create
dual-language texts. Texts range from
word-to-word to original story translations
using the R. Epp dictionary and Dietsch
oral language skills. Wendy Campbell will
share specific literacy strategies with a
focus on "The Rights of All Children and
Social Justice".
6. The Power of Community
Collaboration: Milverton Public School’s
Journey of Inclusion and Learning. In this
session, attendees will come to understand
the importance of creating an Inclusive
culture at school. Come to this seminar
and you will take away some ideas, and
create your own unique responses to this
very needed model of community
collaboration for the benefit of Inclusion for
ALL!
7. Not Just Fixing Cavities! Making lasting
impacts with the dental health of
newcomers! This seminar will describe our
rural based dental health programs/
partnerships with Public Health and our
progress to date. Anne Wall will describe
her role as Oral Health Worker and how
she works with Low German families.
8. Building Bridges. It’s all about getting
there ... It’s about reaching hearts and
meeting both strengths and challenges ...
a constant learning curve of giving and
receiving. Loreen Plett and Teresa
Tratnyek from Perth District Health Unit
work together with the Low German
population. They will speak about their
experiences of home visiting, working at
the “Mother and Young Child Clinic” and
providing health tips at ESL classes. A recently
completed ”Needs Assessment” survey in
this population prompts them in “bridge
passages”.

Keynote Presentation: The Low German
Morning Break Out Session
Experience
By Anne Wall
This session will give a brief overview of Mennonite
history, highlighting Anabaptist roots and discussing
the foundations which unite all Mennonite groups. It
will also address the distinctive beliefs separating
different Mennonite groups. We will explore issues
such as pacifism, education, gender roles and the
impact of cultural values versus faith-based doctrine.
1. Effectiveness and Progress of Using a
Protocol with the Low German Population.
Anne Wall, will describe the development and
implementation of the protocol that was
developed between Family and Children’s
Services and the different churches within the
Low German Community.
Anne Wall is a Child Protection Worker with
Family and Children’s Services of St. Thomas and Elgin
County. Anne has utilized her own Low German
Newcomer experience to build relationships with the
Low German population, the leadership and local
service providers. Through story-telling, reflections
and discussion,
participants will gain helpful insights into working
with the Low German families.
2. Mental Health Issues in the Low German
Community. Katharine Enns, M.A., is a mental
health worker with the Canadian Mental Health
Association in Elgin County. She has worked
with Low German clients for many years and
will discuss mental health challenges specific to
this cultural group.
3. Language. Learn some basic and practical
Low German phrases that will help you to
connect with Low German families.
4. Providing Options and Building Bridges in
Education: The CASE program at Listowel
District Secondary School.
JD Keupfer, Program Coordinator
This workshop will provide an overview of
Community-based Alternative Secondary School.
Started in 2006, this alternative program
provides a path to an Ontario Secondary School
Diploma for students whose families had not
been participating in mainstream secondary
eduction. This program has been received by
several community groups, including Low
German families, respecting their needs and
concerns. CASE combines a strong academic
foundation with an emphasis on practical
learning through work placements.
