Rubric for Evaluation of Written Argumentation

Critical Thinking Resources Insight Assessment How to Apply the Rubric for Evaluating Written Argumentation The Rubric for Evaluating Written Argumentation (REWA) addresses a different eight aspects of sound and effective writing. Each aspect should be evaluated separately. When using the REWA give yourself a row separately. The REWA offers exactly four evaluative options. From highest to lowest the four are: Highly eveloped, Developed, Underdeveloped, and Substandard. As you can see, in the REWA each row can have a different evaluation decision. This indicates to the author where the writing needs or does not need more work to maximize its effectiveness. © 2011 Measured Reasons, Hermosa Beach, CA. Critical Thinking Resources Insight Assessment We strongly recommend that the REWA and the HCTSR be used in tandem. This way a person can accurately focus their evaluative attention on each of the specific criteria as expressed in the two rubrics. Otherwise the tendency is to confuse, omit, or collapse the different individually important criteria. Employing both rubrics allows for both the holistic evaluation of the soundness of the critical thinking exhibited in a piece of writing (HCTSR) and a detailed analysis of the effectiveness of the writing (REWA). Remember that the HCTSR assigns a single rubric score or evaluation decision that represents the best overall characterization of the critical thinking being displayed. By contrast, the REWA analyzes eight separate aspects of the writing and so it provides for eight scores. © 2011 Measured Reasons, Hermosa Beach, CA.
