ABOUT THE DISTRICT
Welcome
TO BEAUTIFUL WEST BROADWAY!
A message from Leah McCormick, Executive Director, West Broadway BIZ
(L) MAYOR BOWMAN VISITED THE WEST BROADWAY BIKE TO WORK PIT STOP
I’m writing this after the rush of the Sherbrook
Street Festival, still riding off all the energy,
weeks later! Thanks for coming out and
celebrating with us, it was a truly great show of
community and community pride. See page 22
for a little recap of the Festival. I’d like to give a
big thanks to all the sponsors and volunteers
who made Sherbrook Street Festival possible.
During the Sherbrook Street Festival, West
Broadway saw two new art installations vinyl art on the front of Waltz On In by
Andrew Shandroski and a mural on Khao
House by Nereo II. Looking ahead to spring
and summer, we hope to have even more art
pop up in the area!
The BIZ took part in Nuit Blanche on Saturday,
October 1. Local artist and mural master,
Michel Saint Hilaire took Winnipeggers on a
tour of murals in the area, see page 8. We’re
already looking forward to planning activities
for next year’s Nuit Blanche celebration!
It was another busy and fun filled summer
here in West Broadway. June was abuzz with
people on two wheels. We were part of Bike
Week Winnipeg, see page 5. Thanks to our
partners for the West Broadway Bike to Work
Day Pit Stop, Misericordia Health Centre and
CancerCare Manitoba. And a shout out to
Tara of Mama Pacha for making us some
awesome custom West Broadway lip balm
to hand out to cyclists!
We also painted our planters fun bright colours
this summer, planted 13 new trees, and made
some repairs to our grapevine lights. As the
days get shorter, nothing lights up the
neighbourhood like the spheres in the trees
and, of course, the spirit of our community!
Warm wishes to everyone during the chilly
Winnipeg winter.

ABOUT THE DISTRICT
Bike Week
WINNIPEG
June
17 -23,
2017
We had a blast during Bike
Week Winnipeg this past
June! We’re lucky to have
some of the best cycling
infrastructure in the city,
right here in West Broadway.
We hope that beyond Bike
Week, Winnipeggers start
cycling more and make use
of the protected bike lane
along Sherbrook.
In partnership with Misericordia
Health Centre and CancerCare
Manitoba, West Broadway BIZ
hosted two events during Bike
Week– a ride-through
breakfast on the Monday and
a Bike to Work Pit Stop on the
Friday. Approximately 150
cyclists rode through West
Broadway and stopped for
a snack or just to chat on their
way to work. Mayor Bowman
even stopped by to fuel up
for the rest of his ride!
Wheels are already in motion
for next year; Bike Week
Winnipeg 2017 is June 17-23.
Whether you ride for fitness,
fun, or to get from point A
to point B, let’s celebrate
four years of Bike Week
in Winnipeg and the 10th
anniversary of Bike to
Work Day.
THIS PENNY FARTHING WAS DEFINITELY ONE OF
THE MOST UNIQUE BICYCLES WE SAW AT THE WEST
BROADWAY BIKE TO WORK PIT STOP!

KARRIE BLACKBURN (CENTRE) WITH ONE OF HER BEGINNER HOOP CLASSES.
“You’re the Hoop Lady!” exclaims
our server at Stella’s as she brings
us menus on a rainy
October evening.
Getting recognized as the “Hoop Lady”
happens quite often to Karrie Blackburn, 28.
Perhaps it’s because she usually has a hoop,
or two, in tow.
“I always have a hoop with me. It’s kind of like
how a cell phone is to some people.”
Says Karrie.
6 | WEST BROADWAY BIZ
Karrie is the founder of Kurrent Motion Hoops,
a concept that gradually developed since she
discovered hula hooping in 2009.
“I went on a camping trip and there was
a woman with four hoops doing so many
amazing tricks and I thought I could do that…
but I couldn’t.”
With determination, and a few YouTube
videos, Karrie was able to master waist
hooping and in two weeks had dropped 10
pounds. Over two years she shed 75 pounds.
But she gained something important –
confidence and a new zest for life!
ABOUT THE DISTRICT
KARRIE SHOWCASING HER HOOP SKILLS AT SHERBROOK STREET FESTIVAL.
PHOTOS COURTESY OF LISA WALDNER.
Karrie took her new found zest for life and
travelled around Europe and New Zealand.
She’s been to 18 countries with her hoops,
teaching others how to hoop, but also
learning herself.
While in New Zealand three years ago, the
concept of Kurrent Motion was officially
born. Karrie never set out to become a hoop
instructor and performer. She’s been hard at
work building her brand and expanding classes
over the past few years, and as of September
2015, Kurrent Motion is her full-time job.
She now teaches hoop classes for a variety
of skill levels in Winnipeg and Southern
Manitoba. Currently Karrie teaches
beginners’ courses at the Broadway
Neighbourhood Centre.
“The Broadway Neighbourhood Centre is really
great. West Broadway is very central, so people
from many areas are close to the classes.”
She also notes that, “The BNC hosts the
Winnipeg Circus Club on Sundays. It’s for all
ages from kids to adults. Any one of any age
can learn a new skill including juggling or
even unicycling!”
Similar to the Circus Club Classes at the BNC,
Karrie’s hoop classes welcome people of all
ages and skill levels.
“One of the biggest impacts I see when people
take my classes is increased confidence. Some
people come in not even knowing how to waist
hoop and by the end of the classes they have
a great sense of accomplishment in learning
something new.”
Benefits of Hooping
• Full-body work out, burning up to 100 calories in 10 minutes
• Increases coordination, balance, flexibility and mobility
• Helps increase serotonin
and enhances mood
• Creates new neural pathways
• Aids in digestion

TOUR GOERS LEARNING ABOUT THE PUPPY LOVE MURAL ON THE SIDE OF FOODFARE.
Nuit Blanche
IN WEST BROADWAY
The BIZ took part in Nuit Blanche
on Saturday, October 1, 2016. This
year Nuit Blanche Winnipeg was
bigger than ever in its seventh
year and we’re happy we were
a part of it!
During the all-night celebration
of contemporary art, we aimed to
make West Broadway a starting
point to Winnipeggers’ nights
as they headed downtown, to
the Exchange, St. Boniface,
and beyond!
8 | WEST BROADWAY BIZ
West Broadway resident, artist, instructor,
and mural master Michel Saint Hilaire, guided
two mural tours. Starting off at one of the
newer businesses in the area, Decadence
Chocolates, Michel gave tour goers an
in-depth look at murals and points of interest,
primarily along Sherbrook Street. After going
on the tour, we were reminded of just how
much public art is in the neighbourhood,
and we hope to continue to add more!
Eye spy: Spot the watermelon in the Puppy
Love mural by Gabrielle Funk and Takashi
Iwasaki, and then try to find the watermelon
in the heritage mural beside it.
The mural by Funk and Iwasaki was
commissioned by the BIZ in 2014 as part
of Synonym Art Consultation’s inaugural
Wall-to-Wall Mural and Culture Festival.

NEW ART IN WEST BROADWAY
Gaia “Mother Earth” on Khao House
Vinyl installation on Waltz On In Barbershop
This mural was live-painted by Nereo II during
Sherbrook Street Festival at the Khao House
Patio Party. This piece is characteristic of
Nereo’s style, using spray paint to create
something beautifully detailed and dreamy.
This artwork was designed by Andrew
Shandroski, known for his abstract style and
minimal line work. The piece feels reminiscent
of a tattoo shop and gives off an Americana
vibe – a perfect fit for the façade of a
barbershop. Shandroski’s work was chosen
amongst submissions from a call for artwork
put out by Synonym Art Consultation.
Fun Fact: Did you know that Nereo also
painted the cow mural on the side of
Boon Burger?
My wife Megan & I are extremely excited to be planting more roots in
Wolseley! In 2016, we will be opening a
Local Wolseley Real Estate Office to continue serving our Wolseley
friends & neighbours with all their real estate needs!

JOSEPH PILAPIL DOING HIS THING DURING THE TRAVELLING SIGN PAINTERS’ ARTISTIN-RESIDENCY AT THE TALLEST POPPY. PHOTOS COURTESY OF EMILY CHRISTIE.
Maybe you’ve seen them
wheeling around their mobile
sign cart, at a pop-up event,
or as part of a local art exhibition
– the Travelling Sign Painters have
become a recognizable name
throughout Winnipeg.
Bridget Ellen and Joseph Pilapil, the duo
behind The Travelling Sign Painters, met at
Red River College in the Digital Media Design
(DMD) program.
“At Red River College we became part of
a close group of friends who worked on
projects together,” says Bridget. Joe also
notes that their group of friends from
College continues to collaborate on art
shows, such as Up and to the Right.
The concept of the Travelling Sign Painters
came to fruition just over a year-and-a-half
ago. Bridget, who is an avid cyclist, was online
and stumbled upon someone in Minneapolis
who cycled around doing on-the-fly prints.
At the time, Bridget and Joe were taking a
sign-painting course with Rick Wagner of
10 | WEST BROADWAY BIZ
ABOUT THE DISTRICT
JOE AND BRIDGET TAKING A BREAK FROM PAINTING TO ENJOY SOME CHICKEN
AND WAFFLES AT THE TALLEST POPPY.
Signmeister. Joe had contacted Rick after
his self-learning reached a plateau and he
wanted to learn more about the art of
sign painting.
“I like having a useful talent. I’m always like,
what can I do with this?” says Bridget.
Taking inspiration from the cycling artists in
Minneapolis and combining that with the
duo’s new script paintings skills, the
Travelling Sign Painters came to be.
Since the concept was born and the cart
constructed, the duo has put their talent to
use for local businesses such as Pop Cart, at
local events such as the Canada 150 launch
at The Forks, and they’ve also showcased
their skills within West Broadway.
Last October, Bridget and Joe were artists-inresidence at the Tallest Poppy. They spent
two days demonstrating sign painting,
including making some beautiful chalkboard
menus for the Poppy. It was during this time
that they developed a love for the restaurant’s
signature meal, chicken and waffles.
“I know they have other food and it’s good,”
Bridget pauses, “but chicken and waffles!”

ABOUT THE DISTRICT
You can also get a tiny taste of their work on
the façade of EMK Clothing (they painted
the store hours).
Beyond the work the Travelling Sign Painters
have done in West Broadway, both Bridget
and Joe have connections to the area. Joe
is a resident and started getting more into
cycling once he moved into the area because
“it’s so central to everything.” Bridget led
a bike tour on behalf of Travel Manitoba
through West Broadway for a visiting
blogger (@alexinwanderland) to showcase
art and points of interest.
The Travelling Sign Painters are West
Broadway supporters, full of ideas for the
future of the area.
THE STORE HOURS ON EMK CLOTHING
PAINTED BY THE TRAVELLING
SIGN PAINTERS.
Joe suggests that more multi-use buildings
would be beneficial, for example, the Thom
Bargen building which is a mix of rental
housing and commercial space.
And more public art would be a great
addition, they both agree.
“Artwork could even be on people’s garages,
if they’re open to it,” says Joe.
Joe and Bridget both currently work
full-time and the Travelling Sign Painters is
their part-time side gig. They hope to make
it a full-time thing and eventually have
a storefront.

Sherbrook
STREET FESTIVAL
Thanks for a great show of community at the 2016 Sherbrook Street
Festival. The Festival is a celebration of our vibrant community and the
people who live, work, and spend time in West Broadway. It’s also a
great way to meet the owners of the shops that line the Sherbrook strip
and help support local businesses!
Over 3000 West Broadway
residents and Winnipeggers
alike stopped by the Festival
for some fun; Sherbrook
Street was bustling with good
times at the beer gardens,
merchant village, and music
stages. The bouncy castle,
craft area, and fire truck were
also highlights for the kiddos
and those young at heart.

FESTIVAL VOLUNTEERS.

Outstanding
COMMUNITY MEMBER
The West Broadway BIZ would like to recognize Michelle Slota for her
service to the community in her role as Event Coordinator for the
Sherbrook Street Festival over the past decade. The BIZ has been fortunate
to have Michelle bring all her hard work and compassion over the years.
Sherbrook Street Festival
under Michelle’s direction grew
substantially in size and quality.
The festival is an important
event that brings together
Winnipeggers to celebrate
our vibrant community.
The Festival has contributed
to changing the way the media
views and portrays West
Broadway and has helped
shape South Sherbrook into
the thriving district it is today.
Michelle has also dedicated
hundreds of hours of her
evenings and weekends
volunteering at many
community events including
the West Broadway Spring
Clean-Up, Tree Banding, the
Snoball Winter Carnival, and
as a counselor at Klinic and
Women’s Health Clinic.
MICHELLE HAS BEEN THE SHERBROOK STREET FESTIVAL
GO-TO FOR MEDIA INTERVIEWS, HELPING WINNIPEGGERS
LEARN MORE ABOUT WEST BROADWAY.
In 2013, Michelle was the
recipient of the Mayor’s BIZ
Award for her work in the
community. She remains
a resident here and an
incredible community asset.
Hats off to you Michelle!
