Dear Friends,
This past year was a banner year for the Library. Construction
was completed in the spring and the formal dedication was
held at the Annual Meeting in June, celebrated by State and
Town dignitaries, the Board and many friends. Throughout the
spring, we heard effusive, grateful compliments from patrons
young and old: everyone who walked through the Library’s
doors was amazed at the new spaces and excited about the
new capabilities. We acknowledged the tremendous effort
made by so many — both in dollars contributed and in hours of
volunteer service — to make it all happen. But no one spent
more time in leading and overseeing the project than our
Building Committee Chairman, Malcolm Whyte . . . and this is
why our Annual Report this year is dedicated to him and his
generous, optimistic spirit.
collections (print and electronic) that are infinitely more
attractive and accessible to borrowers, users and browsers
of all ages in their new setting where carrels, comfortable
seating, up-to-date workstations and better lighted and
labeled shelving all contribute to increased usage;
areas where lovers of poetry, literature and the cultures of
other lands can attend far more programs than ever before
were possible;
a place where speakers of other languages can find materials, software and classes to help them learn and improve
English skills;
assistive technology that is available for young patrons with
disabilities who might otherwise not be able to easily use our
computers;
The Library, forever changed by its expanded structure, has become the vibrant center of the Center — where everyone goes,
where everyone meets, where everyone continues to expand
horizons. Libraries are not just about books anymore . . . they are
about transforming communities. And the Wilton Library is
about strengthening and transforming our community to be
the best it can be.
a drive-up window that provides instant access for the elderly, for parents with young children, and for those who are
simply too busy to browse;
. . . and so much more.
This first year of the Library’s expansion has set our sights for
the future — we certainly can make a difference in the lives of
those we serve and the possibilities are thrilling. It will be up to
all of us to maximize the return on the huge investment the
community has made by using this amazing resource to its
fullest potential. We are proud to present this annual report
not only as a record of the year just passed, but also as a sign of
all that is to come.
Wilton Library’s “community” is, of course, more than simply the
sum of all our individual constituents. Our community has character all its own, creates an environment and a quality of life
that allows residents and employees to exchange, to learn, and
to grow. Within our new spaces we can impact both the community as a whole and those who live and work here in more
ways than ever before . . . inspiring, challenging and changing
lives for the better. We now can offer:
creative crafts that teach kids about recycling and conservation are available throughout the week on a “drop-in” basis
for busy moms in the new Craft Room;
a separate, spacious Story Room to inspire our youngest
listeners and readers with a lifelong passion for books;
