June 2010 Satilla REMC Newsletter Local Students Selected for Prestigious Washington Youth Tour Andrew Boatright, Clint Burkett, Kera Sumner and Jeofry Wages to enjoy trip of a lifetime Andrew Boatright A Clint Burkett rea high school students Andrew Boatright, Clint Burkett, Kera Sumner and Jeofry Wages have been selected to participate in the 2010 Washington Youth Tour, sponsored by Satilla REMC and the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA). Boatright, Burkett, Sumner and Wages will join nearly 100 students from Satilla’s sister electric co-ops across Georgia for this once-in-a-lifetime trip, set for June 10-17. The teen delegates will explore government on a local and national level, gathering in Atlanta before departing for Washington, D.C. Once in D.C., Georgia’s delegation will convene with more than 1,500 youth representing cooperatives across the nation. The delegates will have the opportunity to mingle with peers from other states and exchange views concerning local and national issues. The Washington Youth Tour challenges teens to consider the part they play in history, government and the cooperative movement. It also encourages them to become involved citizens and to consider careers in public service. They will see firsthand the sacrifices that have been made by influential individuals throughout the country. Satilla’s representatives already understand sacrifice to some extent, because all are leaders in their respective schools and communities. Andrew, the son of Andy and Nicole Boatright, is a rising senior at Appling County High School in Baxley. He is very involved in his school’s Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA), Science and FCA clubs and a member of the cross country and wrestling teams. Andrew volunteers at the Sunshine Center and donates blood to help those in need. He hopes to attend college and pursue a career that will allow him to live in and contribute to his local community. Clint is a rising senior at Bacon County High School in Alma. His parents are Vance and Amy Burkett. He is active in the Beta, Drama, Spanish and FCA clubs. He participates in the drama team at his church and volunteers at local events such as the Relay for Life, Day of the Child and Christmas for Kids. Clint is very enthusiastic about the Washington Youth Tour and feels Kera Sumner Jeofry Wages he will become a more productive citizen by seeing places of historical significance and meeting the representatives that shape Georgia and the nation’s capital. Kera attends Pierce County High School in Blackshear, where she is also a senior. She is the daughter of Randy and Maria Sumner. She is vice president of the student body and a member of the varsity softball team. Kera puts her strong belief in community service to work by assisting with the Special Olympics. After graduation, she plans to become a lawyer, and possibly even a judge. Jeofry is the son of Jimmy and Leah Miles. He is a senior and attends Bacon County High School in Alma. Jeofry’s involvement with the Boy Scouts and other community events has provided him with empathy and awareness for people in need. He looks forward to the Youth Tour and hopes to grow as a person as a result of meeting leaders of both Georgia and the United States. Of the 14 candidates interviewed, the decision to pick four was challenging. All of the candidates would have represented Satilla well, and they all are to be congratulated for being nominated by their school counselors and principals for outstanding leadership qualities and abilities. Elizabeth Wilder of Coffee County High School in Douglas and Katelynn Lyon of Atkinson County High School in Pearson were chosen as alternates. Senator Lyndon Baines Johnson inspired the Youth Tour when he addressed the (NRECA) Annual Meeting in Chicago in 1957. The senator and future president declared, “If one thing goes out of this meeting, it will be sending youngsters to the national capital, where they can actually see what the flag stands for and represents.” Since 1965, the Washington Youth Tour has given more than 2,500 students in Georgia and more than 50,000 nationwide the opportunity to take part in this experience. Satilla REMC and other cooperatives continue to realize Johnson’s dream by providing a means for young leaders to witness firsthand the sacrifices and efforts expended on their behalf. GA00670G Satilla Employees Retire with 51 Years of Combined Service 2010 marked the final employment phase of two Satilla REMC employees, Sandra Smith and Ray Boatright. Both Ray and Sandra devoted their careers to serving the Members of Satilla REMC, and their dedication and loyalty to Satilla will not soon be forgotten. Sandra Smith 1985 ‘I plan to spend more time with my family and friends.’ After 25 years of employment with Satilla, Sandra Smith retired in February 2010. Sandra spent the first half of her career in the Customer Service and Member Services Departments and the latter half as Executive Secretary. As a “people” person, Sandra enjoyed meeting and assisting the Members of Satilla REMC and carries many fond memories of the people and friendships she has formed throughout her 25 years. Ray Boatright A native of Pierce County, she and husband, Sidney, are spending their retirement years on the farm where she grew up. Her love of family (particularly her grandchildren), horses and other animals guarantees that she will have no available time to idle away. 1984 ‘Satilla’s Members became my lifelong friends.’ Ray began his career at Satilla in 1984. He was assigned to Morris Chaffin on the underground construction crew and fondly calls Morris the “best boss” of his working career. Ray worked in the trenches with a shovel until Satilla bought its first trencher. He was also instrumental in converting Satilla’s overhead distribution lines from 7,200 to 14,400 volts. Ray worked 14 years in the Construction Department and transferred to the Maintenance Department, where he remained until retirement. He has many happy memories of the 26 years he spent at Satilla. Throughout his professional years of service, many of Satilla’s Members became his lifelong friends. Ray plans to hunt red and gray fox with his Walker hound dogs and spend plenty of time with his grandchildren, Jayci, Jayden and Ryland. In a day and age when employee turnover and a transient workforce are the norm, Sandra and Ray have been exceptional. When two employees work a total of 51 years for one company, their service is a statement of the caliber of the employees of that business. Repeatedly, they demonstrated their diligence in performance of their duties while revealing their caring manner toward co-workers, Members and the Cooperative. Congratulations to Sandra and Ray as they embark on retirement. Their dedication to the Members of Satilla EMC sets a standard of service for the co-workers they are leaving behind.
