OBITUARIES
HC (Hugh) Cottrell
1946-2011
A former Senior captain and member of one
of the Club’s most famous families, died while
playing tennis on 9th December 2011.
Hugh Crispe Cottrell was born in Christchurch
on 2nd May 1946. After attending Fendalton
Primary and Medbury School, he went on to
Christ’s College (1959-1963) where he was a
Prefect and a member of the 1st XV 1962-63
(as a first five eighth) and Athletic team 1963.
On leaving school he began a law degree
at Canterbury University and joined the
Christchurch Football Club, where his father,
A.I. ‘Beau’ Cottrell had been a 1929-32 All
Black and later a long serving and respected
President and Patron and his older brother
Richard had also played.
Hugh played in the Under 20 A side in 1964
and after three seasons in Senior B team and
a Canterbury representative in the grade, he
was selected as a loose forward in the Senior
A side in 1968. He played four seasons in
the Seniors and was always a very fit, honest
and hard working forward. He captained the
side in 1971, who were Joint Championship
winners with New Brighton. He also served
on the Club’s Management Committee from
1968 -71 and was for many years the Club’s
Honorary Solicitor.
In 1974 Hugh married a Hawkes Bay girl Jane
Waldin and soon after they left for two years
in Europe. On his return Hugh played a couple
of seasons as a very experienced leader in
the Senior B side.
As a lawyer Hugh worked firstly for the
family firm of Joynt, Andrews, Cottrell and
Dawson. He had the distinction of being
appointed early in his career a Notary Public
and became a well respected practioner in
Family law, both as a mediator and a Counsel
for Children. He later set up Cottrell Law with
his brother Richard and after Richard retired
he worked firstly for Meares Williams and
then Mortlock McCormack. On his passing
the Mortlock McCormack website said that,
“Hugh brought a special brand of fun and
vitality to the office and his sincerity, honesty
and integrity were beyond reproach and
served as an outstanding example to all our
staff and to the law profession in general”.
Hugh also served as a Fellow on the Christ’s
College Board of Governors from 1991-1993
and was a long time member of the Axemen’s
Club.
He had a wide range of interests and hobbies.
Hugh played the piano, trumpet and the
guitar, was a very keen tramper, tennis player
and enjoyed surfing at the family bach at Gore
Bay.
Hugh was pre-deceased by his son Ben and
is survived by his wife Jane and daughters
Charlotte, Sussanah and Millie.

MJB (Jock) Hobbs
1960 - 2012
It is unlikely that any New Zealand rugby man
will ever have the overall impact on the game
that Jock Hobbs had. Jock was an All Black
captain, but his greatest contribution to rugby
and to New Zealand was made off the field.
Jock married Nicky, the sister of Canterbury
and All Black team mates Robbie and Bruce
Deans. He went to South Africa with the rebel
Cavaliers in 1986, a tour he later regretted
making.
Michael James Bowie Hobbs was born
in Christchurch on 15 February 1960. He
attended Christ’s College, where he was
in the 1st cricket Xl 1974-77 and the 1st XV
1975-77. On leaving school, Jock joined the
Christchurch Football Club in 1978, while
studying Law at Canterbury University and
captained a very successful Under 19 team.
The following year he went straight into the
Seniors and played over 100 Senior games
for the club over the next eight seasons. He
captained the side in his last six years.
After moving to Wellington in 1987, he suffered
a number of bouts of concussion and chose
to retire from the game in the year of the
inaugural World Cup in New Zealand.
He represented Canterbury from 1980-1986,
during which time it held the Ranfurly Shield
from 1982-1985. Jock’s outstanding play
during this era as a combative and tireless
loose forward, saw him selected for the All
Blacks in 1983 against the British and Irish
Lions. He played 39 times for New Zealand,
including 21 Tests and his leadership qualities
saw him captain the All Blacks on a short tour
to Fiji in 1984 and on a tour to Argentina a
year later.
6
Annual Report and Financial Statement of Accounts 2012
In Christchurch Jock worked as a barrister,
firstly for Cavell Leitch and later Cameron
and Company. In Wellington he joined Rainey
Collins, becoming a managing partner in
1991. As a barrister, Jock never lost a jury
trial. He was later Executive Director of
Strategic Finance and a member of the NZ
Institute of Directors. He also did an MBA.
Jock was coach/selector for NZ Universities
rugby from 1990-1995. He also chaired the
Stadium Supporters Club that helped secure
the Westpac Stadium on the Wellington
waterfront. Former Wellington mayor, Fran
Wilde said, “He chaired the meetings, worked
out the tactics and then rolled up his sleeves
and got on with it!”
As an administrator, Jock’s epitaph will
always be ‘the man who saved the game’.
He became a NZRU Councillor in 1995 and
emerged as the crucial figure when the
game went professional that year. He worked
around the clock for six weeks to get the key
players to sign with the NZRU and save the
game from the Kerry Packer-backed World
Rugby Corporation.
triumph in the final. Who will ever forget
the sight of a very ill Jock presenting silver
caps to Richie McCaw and Mils Muliaina
for their 100th test, during the Tournament
and receiving the Vernon Pugh Award for
distinguished service to rugby at the IRB
Awards in Auckland the night after the Final.
He lost his place on the NZRU Council the
following year, when the number of seats
was reduced. However, after losing the subhosting rights for the 2003 World Cup, Jock
was once again called on. He became Board
chairman in 2002 and his crowning rugby
achievement came in 2005 when he led the
successful delegation in gaining the hosting
rights to the 2011 World Cup. This was the
same year he was diagnosed with leukaemia.
It remained relatively dormant over the next
five years, but in 2010 he needed six months
of chemotherapy and late that year was
diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma
which required more aggressive treatment
and much rest. He chose to resign from the
NZRU and Rugby World Cup NZ Ltd boards
to focus on his health. He was the longest
serving chairman in NZRU history.
Christchurch was always Jock’s club. He
presented his Member of the New Zealand
order of Merit, for services to rugby, to
the club in 1996. In 2006 he was made a
Companion of the New Zealand order of
Merit. He was a member of the Axemen’s
Club and was always ready to help the
Christchurch Football Club when he could. He
listened carefully and gave sound advice.
Thankfully, Jock with his typical bravery
and determination, lived long enough to
see the hugely successful 2011 World Cup
tournament and see his beloved All Blacks
Jock would be happy to be remembered as a
man who loved his family, loved having a bit of
fun and who always gave nothing but his best.
He is survived by his wife, Nicky, and children
Emily, Michael, Penny and Isabelle. Michael
summed up everyone’s feelings for Jock,
in front of 800 people at his funeral when
he said, “we love you Dad, enjoy your rest you’ve earned it”.

Maurice Ryan
1918 - 2012
For older club members Maurice Ryan,
always immaculately dressed and usually
smoking a pipe, was a familiar figure at both
Bangor Street and at Westminster Street. This
well respected and liked Life Member passed
away peacefully in September. He was 94 and
his association with the Christchurch Football
Club extended back to the years before World
war II. At the time of his death he was the
oldest living life member and one of the few
remaining links to the club in the 1930s.
Maurice joined the Club in 1938. Previously
he attended St Bede’s College and may well
have joined Christchurch because the Marist
Club decided to go on-mass to rugby league
following a well -documented dispute with the
CRFU in 1923. He played through the grades
eventually reaching the senior team as a loose
forward before military service saw his playing
career end. In 1948 he joined the committee
and over the next two decades held a number
of administrative positions. These included
the role of Assistant Secretary for two years
and, Secretary for another three and Deputy
Club captain for a year. His tenure on the
committee ended in 1968 when he stepped
8
Annual Report and Financial Statement of Accounts 2012
down having served a year as Vice President.
He also found time to coach underweight
teams in the mid-1950s.
Ken Allsop, Club patron, remembered
Maurice fondly saying that he was “ a
dignified man, a good citizen who always gave
of his best...he supported every club event
and was a key figure in the 1963 centennial
celebrations... his meeting notes and letters
were always in long-hand, immaculately
written.”
Ken laughingly recalled trips with Maurice
to Dunedin to watch test matches and also
the AGM where they each received life
membership. “I was one of four that night and
because my surname name was Allsop I was
first... good old Maurice was last..we often
had a laugh over that.”
The Club extends its sincere sympathy to his
family.

CHAIRMAN’S REPORT
For the first time since 2004 the Christchurch
Football Club has been able to report a
surplus for the year. This is mainly attributable
to the profit that the motels have generated
because of the increased patronage due to
the earthquakes. Other contributing factors
have been the Bar & Restaurant’s continued
profitability and the Rugby Committee going
from a Loss of $54,540 in 2011 to a surplus
of $38,894 in 2012. The Club’s financials
are covered in more detail at the end of this
report.
On the rugby field we promised so much
but, in the end, only one team delivered –
The Colts Premiers – and they did it well!
Congratulations go to them and their support
team of Ross, Daniel, Dave, Peter, Kashi and
Kurt. We were well represented by the other
teams: Div 1 & Div 2 both nearly made the
Top 4 in their respective grades, Div 3 tripped
up in the final in a game they would normally
have won, the Colts Under 20s can be very
proud of their efforts to reach the final, only to
go down to a very well drilled team, and the
Canardlys continued to be the Canardlys – a
team of great guys who add so much to the
Club.
The Junior section of the Club continues to
grow under the leadership and guidance of
its very good Committee chaired by Tony
Hussey. They fielded forty Junior teams
this season which must have taken some
organising. Tony and his team can be
justifiably proud of their work during the year.
The process of organising the earthquake
repairs to the carpark and driveway is nearly
10
Annual Report and Financial Statement of Accounts 2012
complete and the contractors have assured
the Club that these will be completed by the
middle of March next year. The other repairs
to the Clubrooms and the Motels will be
carried out after the 150th Celebrations have
been held at Easter next year.
As always our grounds require care and work
to be carried out on them during the summer
months. We are very fortunate to have Russell
Bayliss looking after the grounds but he would
be the first to admit that he can’t do it on his
own. To maintain the grounds successfully
requires planning and money. The money will
be coming from Grants and the Grounds Levy
that all players have paid. The Executive are
hopeful that we will not have to use all of the
Grounds Levy collected this year and that with
the Grounds Levies collected in future years
we can be in a position in a few years time to
carry out a major upgrade of No 2 Ground.
A decision has been made to sell the
Aylesford Street section and we are confident
that this will be done by the middle of next
year.
Our 150th Jubilee celebrations, to be held
at Easter next year, are being organised by
Tony Murdoch and a very able committee
comprising some long time members who are
very passionate about the Club. It promises to
be a weekend to remember.
Lorna and Mike continue to do an excellent
job in looking after the motels, the bar and
the restaurant – this is very evident from the
financial results that they have realised. On
top of this Mike has, as in previous years,
done an excellent job in his position of Rugby
Development Manager.
the Club as she is involved with the Junior
Boys’ section of the Club.
The Club and our teams continue to be more
and more reliant on sponsorship. We are very
fortunate and grateful for the sponsorship that
we receive. Please show your appreciation by
supporting our sponsors.
As in previous years Eddie Cropley,
Westminster Sports’ CEO, has assisted the
Club by way of carrying out secretarial tasks
for the executive, identifying and negotiating
sponsorship deals and by preparing and
submitting the Club’s applications for Grants.
His assistance has been invaluable and we
are extremely appreciative for his contribution
to the Club.
Over the years the Christchurch Football Club
has been well served by the Club members
that have been on the Rugby Committee and
on the Executive. This year is no exception
with Mike O’Donovan, Toby Giles and
Pierre Gargiulio leading a very good Rugby
Committee. I know I have been very fortunate
to have an Executive comprising Gerald
Wilson, Toby Giles, Nick Martin and Bryce
Thomson working with me. Unfortunately,
early in the year Nick had to stand down
due to personal reasons but I am hopeful
that he will return some time in the future as
he has a lot to offer. I wish to make special
mention of Peter Bowden. He is on the Rugby
Committee, he has up graded the Club’s
website and he is at present up grading the
Christchurch Park website. He also updates
the Club’s website on a regular basis. Many
thanks Peter.
As most of you are aware Tanyia Legge
resigned from her position as the Club’s
Administration Assistant in late June. Tanyia
had been in this position for seven years and
in that time she had become the Club’s go to
person if you wanted to know something or
you needed something done in a hurry. The
Club is extremely grateful for all that she has
done. Fortunately, Tanyia will still be around
In August the Executive decided that if the
Club was to progress it required a Business
Development Manager and on 3 September
Tim Murdoch started in the position. Prior to
this Tim had worked for New Zealand Cricket
for a number of years. Tim is responsible
for the successful running of the Club and
has a number of projects that when they
are completed should see the Club in a very
healthy position for the next long while.
2013 promises to be a huge year for the
Christchurch Football Club. I believe that we
have every thing in place to ensure that this
occurs.
Alan Trent
11
CHRISTCHURCH PARK REPORT
MOTELS
Turnover for the year ended August 2012 was
$239,825, a 27.6% increase on last year. This
compares very favourably with last year’s
13.6% increase, however the occupancy rate
can still improve.
The units are yet to have earthquake repairs
but general maintenance has continued with
units 1 to 5 having had their roofs painted.
Some couches have been purchased along
with beds as on-going upgrades.
A new barbecue with improved roof has been
installed.
PLAYING FIELDS
It was alluded to last year that steps would
be taken to control the poa annua in the
grass sward. This was done by killing all
vegetation with Roundup and resulted in an
improvement, in particular on No.2 where the
wireweed was controlled.
12
Annual Report and Financial Statement of Accounts 2012
Emergency field repairs were undertaken
pre-season when we found that grass was
not growing on the drain-line depressions
running the length of No.2. Thanks to some
outstanding organising by Pierre, Toby and
Mike, along with the army of volunteers, this
work was completed.
We are always looking to maintain and
improve the grounds but funding is the
restraint. In spite of this, and the hammering,
particularly No.2 ground gets with practices
as well as games, the grounds came through
the season well.
The No. 2 ground will again be sprayed this
off-season for further improvement and it is
planned to skim this ground next season to
correct the undulations which were inflicted by
the earthquakes.
Two significant plant items were purchased,
a new John Deere mower, and a spray unit
which reduces the need for contractors.
MAINTENANCE
Maintenance is on going. Notably the
clubrooms roof was painted, trees in the
driveway have been trimmed as well as three
trees threatening neighbours’ properties
were removed. The removal of all trees along
the drain to stop the shading of the grounds
although desirable has not been carried out
owing to cost.
All earthquake related maintenance is still
awaiting the green light.
A number of projects are under-way to ensure
the facility is in pristine condition for the 150th
celebration.
Russell Bayliss, our groundsman and fix-it
man continues to give extra-ordinary service.
Thank you Russell.
Mac Ferguson, our relief manager and
maintenance (and crisis) electrician is
outstanding, together with Ken Charlton who
is always just a call away to offer assistance.
Eddie Cropley, David Wilson and many others,
who contribute, a huge thanks, your help is
very much appreciated.
Bryce Thomson
STAFF AND HELPERS
Lorna O’Donovan, our Complex Manager,
together with husband Michael, have
continued to manage and promote our
operation and the results speak volumes for
their effort. Thank you to them and their staff.

CLUB CAPTAIN’S REPORT
The 149th year has been another successful
season for the Christchurch Football Club on
and off the paddock. This was evident with
our Colts U20’s making the final, Division 3
playing in their fourth consecutive final and
the very well drilled Colts Premier team who
took out the competition in a gripping final
against Sydenham. All teams represented
Christchurch Football Club upholding the
traditions and the club’s fine reputation.
The highlight of the year was seeing the Colts
Premier team take out the final having lost
last year. The success of this team can be
attributed to the hard-work of the coaches
Ross Tarawhiti and Daniel O’Brien. The
team is to be commended on their level of
professionalism on and off the pitch. This
was a direct result of the time and effort put
in behind the scenes by the management
team of Dave Stuthridge (Sponge) and
Kashi. Within this team there are some great
“club men” who have shown rugby ability far
beyond their age. This bodes well for the club
and its future.
16
Annual Report and Financial Statement of Accounts 2012
The Division 1 and Division 2 teams had
mixed results in 2012. Although the results
did not always go our way, all team members
should feel proud of the way they played,
demonstrating great heart and spirit. A big
thank you has to be made to the coaches
and managers of Division 1, Matt Mustchin,
Johnny Seque, Matt Lewis, Duncan Trevella
and Leanne Curgenven. This team will learn
a lot from this season and will stand them in
good stead for the 150th celebration year in
2013. The Division 2 team, coached by new
combination Terrence Hunkin and Aidan Don,
started the season well but a few results
went against them, pushing them out of the
top 6. A special thank you must be made
to managers Graham Mitchell and Chris
Hammett for another well organised Division
2 team.
This years Under 20 team proved to be a
successful team in what is traditionally a
hard fought grade. This team made the final
against Boys High 2nd XV (coached by Daniel
O’Brien), but couldn’t quite beat the team they
had previously lost twice to throughout the
season. Thank you to Bruce Morton, Allen
Harding and Peter Freeman.
In their fourth consecutive final the Division
3 team came unstuck against their old foe
Burnside. Heading into the final they had
beaten each other once during the season,
which set the scene for an exciting final.
Here’s hoping this team can continue with its
great success in the many years to come.
The Canardlys had a somewhat inconsistent
season, leaving them to battle out the bottom
4 places of their respective section. This
grade is proving harder and harder to attract
new players but there has been a massive
effort put in by the team to try and grow the
Canardly’s for future years. A special mention
has to be made to Tommo, Wee Dave and
(captain) Lefty.
A very special mention must be made to
Mike O’Donnovan for his relentless hard work
and effort that he puts in to provide what is
undoubtedly one of the best-managed clubs
in New Zealand. His wife Lorna plays not
only a huge part in allowing Mike to be so
successful but finds the time to ensure the
clubrooms are a success.
Thanks must be given to all the volunteers
for their unfailing hard work. This ensures the
club remains successful and at the fore front
of Club rugby in New Zealand. Thank you also
to the partners and families for allowing the
volunteers the time that is needed.
2013 will be the year that Christchurch
Football Club celebrates its 150th jubilee.
It will be a season filled with excitement,
opportunities and a chance to catch up with
members and players from previous eras. It
will be great to see you all join in amongst the
festivities.
Give ‘em the Axe.

The preseason got off to a good start and
with wins against Southbridge, Burnside and
University, a twenty-six strong squad was
named. We headed to Hanmer Springs for a
team camp where there was training, team
building and everyone just getting to know
each other as a group. We came back from
camp with a really positive and good feel
about the season ahead.
Our season was plagued by some serious
injuries with Jake Ashby (Knee), James
Owens (Broken Leg), Jade Rauhihi (Knee)
Sam Cottam (Shoulder) just to name a few,
also there was the normal pulls and sprains
20
Annual Report and Financial Statement of Accounts 2012
associated with rugby. This stretched our
depth of the squad very early on.
After winning our first two games defending
the DCL shield and handing the Crying Towel
back to Linwood our season was off to a
good start. Unfortunately we went backwards
the very next week and also relinquished
the DCL shield to Marist Albion at Rugby
Park. After a stern talking to after what we
all agreed was a poor performance, it was
critical to get our season back on track as
there were some tough games to follow.
The season to follow was a not what we had
all trained and worked towards with a narrow
loss to Sydenham, wins against Sumner
and Shirley a loss to HSOB left us needing
to win two of the next three to make the top
section. A win against New Brighton had us
feeling positive, but things only got worse
with consecutive losses to Burnside and
University, we now needed results to go our
way.
We didn’t make the top section so our sights
shifted to finishing fifth by winning the bottom
section and playing the bottom two of the top
six. We finished top of section two winning
five in a row. This setup a semi final with New
Brighton at Rawiti Domain, but once again
we only had ourselves to blame though some
poor option taking and poor execution losing
29-19.
In closing this off I would like to thank Mike
and Lorna O’Donovan for the help and
support throughout the season and also
Megan Williams and her team at Christchurch
Park Physiotherapy for the countless hours
spent fixing our players and enabling them to
play.

The 2012 season has been another satisfying
year for Div 2. With a number of players
not returning from previous year/s it was
a challenge for the coaching staff to get
the new boys up to speed and put out a
competitive side. To all accounts this was
quite a success, with our losses in the first
round being close games able to have gone
either way. We managed to finish in the top
eight however we made a bad start with a
draw against Burnside, then had a good win
over University, but with losing our last two
games against Old Boys and Brighton ending
our season.
We had seventeen new players joining us this
year, Ben Anderson, Stefan Bendall, Jock
Mugford, Karl Uilelea, Tevita Pongi, Heath

Forsyth, Sam Milne, Alex Wenden, Sam
Jeffries, David Murphy, Liam Heneghan, Dan
Young, Simione Taufaeteau, Tevita Tupou,
Saia Tuionetoa, Sioeli Kolo and Tevita Taulani,
joining the seven guys returning, Andre
Thompson, Kyle Brewer, James Fahey, Matt
Casper, Tom Angus, Ricky Hollamby and
Kimeon Reade.
Ben Anderson had a solid year leading from
the front and was one of only two who played
in all games the other being our halfback
Jock, with stalwarts James Fahey and Kyle
Brewer only missing a game each, the backs
showed skill and excitement at times scoring
some great tries with Heath and Karl being
the standout backs.
With Chris Hammett unavailable to coach this
year, Aidan Donn joined the team as coach to
help out Terrance, both Terrance and Aidan
had a good relationship with all the team and
made it an enjoyable year. Chris was a great
asset to the team as co manager, and I look
forward to another year of working alongside
these guys.

to your support next year. Thanks also to Mike

The 2012 season was always going to be a
challenge with the expectation of going for
a four-peat of all the trophies on offer and
unfortunately in the final we had our chances
to take it but played poorly as a team on the
day. However we still did remarkably well
taking out the Cup and leading the Trophy
round up to the final.
showed his class and even showed the
backs how to score some tries. There was a
welcome return from Ned Leatua who settled
back into the team after a two year sabbatical
in Wales, although a little slower but still
putting in some good hits. Was great having
Lee Temomo join us from Div 2 who worked
well in tandem with JD as they alternated at
nine throughout the year.
The team was bitterly disappointed straight
after the final but held their heads up and
took it on the chin. I’m sure we’ll be more
motivated to come out and smash Burnside in
our Clubs 150th celebration season.
Some retirements and departures have
been noted. Garg moved to Nelson, Andy
Broomhall old age, and myself heading to
the GC.
Off the field there were plenty of antics with
our preseason trip to Nelson and postseason
trip to Wanaka, along with plenty of great
nights at the club and some impromptu team
parties.
2012 has also been a year where it seemed
like ½ the team’s partners were having
babies. From memory the tally so far seven
babies born with another three on the way,
and still counting.
It’s been a pleasure bringing some new and
not so new players into the team. Young
fellas like Justin (Bieber) Hill and Josh
(Beiber2) Hamilton typified the Div 3 spirit and
got amongst it. New recruit Pete Bowden
Thanks to the Div 2 boys that filled in when we
were short, much appreciated.

Leading points scorer: Nick Mannering 145
After the great effort last year and the
disappointment of the loss at the last hurdle
the Grand Final the goals were set to win this
very tough championship this year and finish
the business.
With the loss of twelve players from last
years squad it was always going to be a
big ask, but recruitment went well and on
board came Andy Williams (fullback) Brad
Tucker (lock) Scott Harpham (flanker) Angus
Hawke (hooker) Brydon Fonotia (Utility back)
Jayden Goodyear (wing) Peter Donaldson
(loose forward). Graduating from the under
20’s Chris Kerslake (half back) Ethan Plaskett
(No8) Henry Marchant (lock).
The team was very fortunate to have two
great leaders in William Mills and Nick
Mannering and when Milsie was called into
Div 1 part way through the season Nick took
over the reigns. The combined efforts of these
two were outstanding.
Ross had the forward pack well drilled and
hardened for the business end of the season
and this showed particularly in our last four
games. No forward pack got the better of
them all season.
Dan produced a varied attacking plan for
the backs and made some clever and bold
decisions at crucial times.
He also coached the ChCh Boys High
2nd fifteen to success in the Under 20
competition. Whilst we scored 65 tries during
the season, the cornerstone of our success
was magnificent defence, no more epitomised
than in our tough Grand Final against
Sydenham who had a huge forward pack.
Another huge factor during the season was
the strength of our bench where no matter
who was used contributed significantly when
they came on.
Every single member of this team contributed
to our success both on and off the field and
whilst I am reluctant to single out individuals
no one will forget the tries Sam Jamieson
(Grandad) scored against Lincoln University
one in each game, Sydenham (first round)
and the two in the semi final against Burnside.
All of which turned those games and ensured
victory, William Mills, Nick Mannering, Andy
27
Williams, Hamish Munro Sam Jamieson were
all deservedly given game time in Div 1 at
various stages during the year and all added
value. Hayden O’Donnell half back, whilst
used primarily in Div 1, also played well for the
Colts and his experience was an asset in the
final.
Last but not least the wonderful group of
family supporters and club stalwarts who
rode every try each week and in particular to
Life member Jerry Rowberry who did us the
honour of presenting jerseys to the players
both on the first day of the season and on
Grand Final day.
I would like to thank Ross and Dan for their
hard work as coaches. They not only helped
the guys become better footballers but helped
grow them as young men with good life skills
moving forward.
We also could not function without the
support from our sponsors Dwayne
Prendergast and his team at Benchmark
Homes, Nick and Phil Mills at European Cars
and Paul Herring at Ideal Electrical Supplies
for his continued support in supplying our
much needed tape requirements.
A big thank you to Pete Bowden who assisted
at various times during the season particularly
leading to Grand Final day.
Kurt Harrington our physio who has kept the
bodies together and been a great help to the
players.
Our great friend Kashi who always unselfishly
gives great support to the team and
management each week.
Those leaving Colts this season:
William Mills, Jack Burmester Chris Kerslake
Brad Murchison Sam Jamieson
Others may make Div 1 but wherever life
takes them they can be proud of the fact
they all made a huge contribution to this club
in Colts Premier 2012. The club can look
forward to seeing some of this team reaching
higher honours.
A big thank you to Mike O’Donovan for his
continued support and also to the under 20
coaches for their understanding and support
of Ross and Dan during the season.

The Under 20’s had a very successful season,
just falling at the last hurdle. We reached the final
but lost to CBHS (we will do better next year).
With a new coaching team of Alan Harding
and Bruce Morton, and the return to manager
of Peter Freeman, we approached the season
with vigour and enthusiasm (honestly we did).
Despite the tireless efforts of Mike O’Donovan,
pre-season training revealed a continuation
of a trend for the U 20’s of a plethora of
forwards and a dearth of backs. Working with
these very limited resources, Bruce (backs
coach), managed to convert some of the loose
forwards to backs, (Thanks boys for having
such a wonderful team spirit and going over to
the dark side – the BACKS).
We started the season with a fantastic win
against Shirley of 61–0 and in only one game
did we have more than seventeen points
scored against us, and in four we held the
opposition to a doughnut.
We greatly enjoyed our winning streak in the
middle of the season of eleven games.
Overall a very successful season, but from
the coaching teams point of view, equally
important is that we had a team of well
rounded, enthusiastic young men who wanted
to work together and for each other. Their
commitment to the team and the club was
very satisfying to witness and if we can keep
the members of this team within the club,
we are sure that they will make significant
contributions to the club.
36
Annual Report and Financial Statement of Accounts 2012
That being said, as most of the team will still
be eligible next year, we very selfishly hope
that the eligible ones will turn out for the U 20’s
next year. However we are realistic enough
to believe some will go to other teams (within
Christchurch), the Prem Colts, and probably
some to Div 1.
Another aspect of this season was the
camaraderie shown by and between the U 20’s
and Colts Prems, it was refreshingly different to
last season, and long may it continue.
The coaching team would like to say thank you
to the Christchurch Football Club, its officers
and members, parents, friends, hangers on
and other sundry people for their support,
encouragement and well-meant banter during
the season for without you we would not have
had such a successful and satisfying season.
Finally from the Coaches (Alan and Bruce),
and me the manager (Peter), we decided not
to single out individual players in this report
as they were a team, and we have spoken
(hopefully) to them all. Though we would like to
say thank you to the members of our team, for
you were a team, for a great season,
Well done lads, see you all next year.

The Canardly’s had a very interesting season
this year. It was a up and down one for us
being more on the down side though. We
gave it the old all but couldn’t put anything
into cabinet this year. With the normal
unexpected injuries this season we lost a
few key players that we couldn’t afford to
lose which made it a even harder job for
the coaches and the boys, having to make
up some kind of back up plan and put a lot
of boys playing in unfamiliar positions. This
as normal caused a lot of headaches for
everyone involved but made some players
shine even more than normal.
With us losing a few of the old team members
this season due to them hanging up their
boots but hopefully not for good, we also
picked up few new ones that were welcomed
to the team and club. The team also had a
few call ups to the union this year in which I
hope we learned from this experience as we
need to so we can come back as stronger
team next year.

We will be back next season with new head

time the season kicks off. With the return of
a few of the past players next season on the
cards We are also looking for new players
and their mates, so anyone interested please

would also like to thank the club and the
players that helped us out this season, big
thanks. We look forward to next one.

us a bit off guard in regard to playing gear.
Under 6 is regarded as a hard section to look
after with so many new players, and parents,
to the Club. Amber did a great job in finding
places in teams for all the children and finding
coaches as well. Not to mention finding ten
different colours for the team names. She
was a deserved winner of the Chapman Cup
Amber.
If registration numbers were anything to go
by 2012 was shaping to be a great season.
Five hundred and seventy seven boys and
girls registered to play for CFC. This can be
attributable to a few events including the
earthquakes which resulted in families moving
around the city, spin off for the 2011 Rugby
World Cup and the great reputation CFC has
as a Club.
Under 7 was looked after by Rhonda Kennett
this season. Rhonda looked after the majority
of these players last season. We had six
teams and just on seventy players in Under 7.
This was in line with the number of teams and
players the previous year. In the second year
of Rippa it is a good steeping stone into ten
aside and tackle rugby in 2013.
Record numbers registering is a fantastic
achievement however having this number
of players also takes in strain on your
resources. Slotting five hundred and seventy
seven children into forty Under 6 to Under
13 teams is no easy task. Having to find
forty plus coaches & managers, playing
strips at the rights sizes, balls, bags, rippas
& mouthguards was a challenge in itself. It
was fair to say the cupboard was bare as we
started the first games of the season and we
still handed over four hundred jerseys on back
order. Forty junior teams was another record
for CFC this season.
Under 8s this year were looked after by
new committee member Michael Sheedy.
Challenges for Michael included the loss of a
few coaches that had moved away from the
area and the need to increase the number sin
each team to allow for ten aside rugby. It was
great to see a few parents put their hands to
cover the shortfall in coaches. There were
five Under 8 teams with around seventy five
players. Numbers were similar to 2011. Most
of the teams were in Section 1 with some
good rivalry between the teams. There are
some very talented players in these teams
and the future competitive grades looks
exciting.
The Under 6 grade had ten teams this year
(six teams in 2011). New committee Amber
Field was literally thrown in the deep end. With
over one hundred children in this grade the
amount of new players to the Club caught
Steve Leiataua has looked after the majority
of the Under 9 teams for a few years now. He
has good coaches and players in these teams
that have been together for two to three years,
if not longer. These five teams are consistently
38
Annual Report and Financial Statement of Accounts 2012
playing good rugby. A highlight for the Under
9’s this year was their end of season mini
tournament. It was very competitive, on and
off the field, with the final going into extra time.
This is a great way of showing Club spirit as
individual teams can come together and have
fun day like this. Steve also arranged coaching
nights for coaches on various topics such as
tackling. This was done with Mike O’Donovan,
the clubs RDO, and was much appreciated by
all those in attendance.
Like Steve, Margaret Harry has been looking
after her teams for a few years now and had
the five Under 10 teams of around seventy
players on track for a good season also. Next
season brings new challenges to this section
as they move to competitive grades and also
will be playing fifteen aside.
Due to a vacancy in the committee I had the
privilege of looking after the Under 11 grade.
Player numbers and being fifteen aside saw
five teams into merge into three. The teams
played well in their respective sections with all
three making semi finals. The Black and Red
teams won their semi final games and went
onto the finals. Black won the section 3 final
comfortably and the Red team made a great
comeback but narrowly went down 24-27
in the section 2 final. The Gold team also
regained the Section 1 Challenge Shield lost
earlier in the season.
Under 12s continued to be under the watchful
eye of Taniya Legge. This year we had four
Under 12 teams which we have not had
before. This had its own challenges in placing
players into the best and appropriate teams.
The Yellow team were in the Section 4 Plaque
Final and went down in an epic battle against
Hornby 7-0. The Black team made Section
2 semi finals. An achievement they can be
proud of. In the U12 Championship section
we had the Gold and Red teams competing.
The Red team finished sixth overall. The Gold
team, having only lost one game all year to
Burnside, turned the tables and took out the
U12 Championship final beating Burnside 2214. The Gold team also had honours of being
the inaugural recipients of the O’Loughlin
Family Cup as 2012 JAB team of the year.
Coach Graeme Moody also received the
Bryan Mustchin Trophy for JAB coach of the
year.
Under 13s this year fielded two teams and
continued to be looked after by Aaron
Kitto. It was a challenge for our teams to be
competing against in this open weight grade.
Christchurch is traditionally known to have
smaller boys as the schools quickly snapple
up the much bigger players. Both teams
can be proud of their achievements. The
Red team made the Section 4 plaque semi
final losing out to New Brighton in a close
match 17-21. The Black team also made the
Championship semi final and went down to
CBHS 12-28. Aaron was also instrumental
in organising referring courses for our JAB
coaches in conjunction with the Canterbury
Rugby Referees Association.
We also have two other fellows that go
about doing their bit for the Club being
Graham Austin and Mike Verheul. Both these
gentlemen do a fine job representing CFC on
the CRFU Metro JAB committee, which we
thank them for giving up their time to do.
39
And lastly, a relatively silent member of the
team, Murray McEwan our treasurer. Murray
has the daunting task of keeping the books
straight and monitoring our spending to
ensure all our teams are kitted out each
season and we operate within budget. Not an
east task when you have so many teams and
players.
Club Day was a great success. Although
other parks such as Plylimon, Fendalton and
Jeffreys Rd are considered home grounds, to
have all forty teams play at Westminster St on
this day took a great deal of organising. The
weather was on our side and the fields held
up well as each field had four to five games
played on it that day.
With so many teams this year it was going
to be impossible to have our team nights as
in the past. In an attempt to have all teams
enjoy our great facilities we split team times
into afternoon and nights. Whilst the night
sessions ran as normal having five teams at
the club on a Saturday afternoon while the
seniors were playing gave the place more
atmosphere. It seems the children, an mums
and dads, enjoyed a nice Saturday afternoon
out. Having done it this way also meant teams
would be at the Clubrooms two to three times
during the season opposed to once.
Prize Giving was run in similar lines to the last
season as well with splitting the competition/
non competition grades. This gave all teams/
grades a chance to do their thing without the
facilities being too stretched to handle it.
40
Annual Report and Financial Statement of Accounts 2012
Sponsors play a big part in JAB. Jeremy &
Ang De Gouw of Marshlands Fresh Produce
continued to supply all teams with oranges for
the season. Roughly four thousand oranges!
Mark O’Loughlin of Bayleys (now Harcourts
Gold) supplied all the teams with player of
the day trophies. This year we also did Player
of the Day T-Shirts on team day/nights. Our
thanks to Christchurch Electrical, Frontrunner
Bush Inn, Vat 42 and Shaun Bradley Builders
for covering the cost of these.
So was 2012 as successful as 2011. We
may not have as many trophies in the
cupboard this year. However, if you take into
consideration the record number of players
we have, the record number of teams we
have, the ability to arrange coaches/managers
for all these teams and a well run JAB section
I would say we have been successful on and
off the field.
2013 looks to be a promising season for the
JAB. It all starts with our 150th celebrations
at Easter. We look forward to playing our part
in these celebrations with games schedule for
the Saturday. It’s hard to imagine but some of
the juniors players we will have at the 150th
will be there to celebrate the Clubs 200th
birthday on 2063.

AXEMEN
Trustees
Dale Cooper (Chairman) Don Quested, (Secretary) Bryan South (Treasurer) Jerry Rowberry,
Stephen Dillon, Andrew McKeller, Derrek Abbott (Immediate past Chairman)
For local participating Axemen members we
had a ‘Meet the seniors’ evening at the start
of the season. This was the first function of its
kind after a long break and with the playing
rosters changing so quickly these days
the Axemen viewed this as a very welcome
return.
The senior team had about twelve new
members this year and we enjoyed a great
night with Andrew McKeller’s presentation of
the team making the evening.
Next we had a well attended lunch with
interesting and entertaining presentations
from Tony Murdoch on the plans for the
Jubilee celebrations and also from Bob
Eastgate.
Buck Anderson from New Zealand Rugby
brought with him the William Webb Ellis Cup
which club members loved seeing, touching
and having photos taken with it. He also told
some funny and good tales.
A very special best wishes and farewell
was given to Brad Mooar, another Axeman,
furthering his coaching dreams as an
assistant coach of the new Kings franchise in
the Super 15 competition.
Axemen participating at the club know the
support and backing all our members make
to the on going strength and success of the
club today.
Coaching staff make regular references to
players and teams that have preceded them
and a number of members receive invitations
42
Annual Report and Financial Statement of Accounts 2012
to address club teams prior to key matches.
The Axemen continue to financially support
the club and this season have assisted
with the up grade of the clubs sound
system, a new sail cloth over the BBQ
pit and the electronic copying the club’s
extensive photographic history. These club
enhancements are all made possible by the
continued membership and support of the
Axemen.
Axemen have a long list of members who
live away from Christchurch who continue
to unselfishly support the club. For those
members if you are considering coming to the
150th celebrations we want to assist you in
any shape or form we can.
There are home stay accommodation options
that you may wish to enquire about or if it’s
just transport over the weekend. Please get
cracking and registrar and if you have any
special requests we will put in place the
necessary arrangements.
The Axemen Christmas dinner is on the 28th
of November and we look forward to another
great turnout and a most enjoyable evening.
Seasons greetings to all the Axemen family
and a sincere thanks for all your support and
positive encouragement of the Christchurch
Football Club.
Dale Cooper
CHRISTCHURCH GENTLEMEN (GOLDEN OLDIES)
149 years ago the “Gentlemen of
Christchurch” played a “Christ College’
team in a game of rugby football. This was
considered (in our eyes) the first game of
rugby in NZ.
Whilst Kit Chambers “KC” may be the only
current Gentlemen that played in the original
match of 1863 there was a new look to the
Christchurch Gentlemen of 2012 in more ways
than one.
The new playing strip made its debut in the
opening season tournament in Woodend.
Thanks largely to The Axemens Club,
Marshlands Fresh Produce, Golden Homes
and VAT42 Limited (SS Roofing) the playing
strip of sixteen years has been retired.
With a new strip also came new players. A few
making their debuts this season were Bruce
Moreton (CFC U20 Coach), Tabai Matson
(CFC U11 coach but may be known for other
reasons) and Andy March, finally, after much
banter, made it onto the field for a game.
match against the Hurunui Rams. Was a great
weekend. Highlight, apart from Eme’s table
surf, was a cameo appearance by none other
than former CFC RDO Bryan Mustchin. As we
all know Bryans no spring chicken. His build
would indicate he’s a front rower by trade,
but, paired up with son Mat he looked right at
home on the wing.
The trip being so successful will be on the
Gentlemen’s calendar of regular matches,
game or not!
Overall game results are irrelevant. Success is
measured on how many substitutes you have
at the beginning and end of a game.
The Gentlemen are looking forward to next
year, the 150th jubilee celebrations especially,
where we will feature in the Easter weekend’s
celebrations.
Tony Hussey
The Gentlemens usual calendar of games
included the Woodend tournament, Burnside
Battlers, Prebbleton Blue Bullets and the
Kaiapoi tournament.
This year a weekend the team headed away
with families in toe to Hanmer Springs with a

CFC NETBALL – SEASON’S REVIEW
The start and end of the season comes
round pretty quick, we started this year with
earthquake damaged courts being repaired
which meant an extra round on a Saturday
being added so here we were for the first part
of the season playing at 4pm on a Saturday,
once that sun goes down at the courts it gets
pretty cold, not to many of us enjoyed that,
once the courts were fixed things went back
to normal and the 4pm round was dropped.
We had seven teams this year, including a
young U17 team join the club.
Our Senior A Team started the season in
Senior Reserve and had to win most of the
games to stay there, unfortunately things
didn’t go to plan and they slipped down to
2A. They fought hard all season to get back
up the grades and found themselves in the
playoffs for Senior Reserve once again,
unfortunately it was not there year and lost
that game.
I would like to congratulate Helen Abernethy
on being the Player of the year, a welldeserved award and hope to see you back
next season.
I would like to thank the team for their hard
work and commitment this season and to
the coach Andrew Jarvie, for your time and
contribution; I know the girls appreciated it.
awesome bunch of people and I hope to see
you all back next year.
Each year we struggle with coaches and
managers and we know everyone is busy
but without the people we have, we wouldn’t
have the teams. So thank you for your
commitment and for giving up your time.
Every year we have to supply three club
umpires who commit to umpiring every
Saturday before or after their own games.
Umpiring is not for everyone and most people
would prefer not to do this at all so to Lisa
Gordon, Andrew Jarvie & Kerriann Gardner
a huge thank you for committing your time
every Saturday to do this for the club.
It has been tough finding the time this year
with everyone being so busy and running the
netball club has been challenging, we always
struggle for new committee members so I
would like to thank Sophie Foote for coming
on board, it’s great to have a new member.
Everyone contributed a huge amount and we
got through. If it wasn’t for the great team we
have, we wouldn’t be where we are today.
I would like to thank the committee for your
time, hard work and commitment this year, I
know it doesn’t get any easier.
Hopefully we will see the girls back next
season to help get this team back to Senior
Reserve.
I would like to congratulate Anne McIntyre
on getting married this season and they are
expecting their first child, so congratulations
Anne we look forward to photos when bub is
born.
To all the teams, thank you for your continued
support of the club. You guys are what make
it a great club to play for, you are such an
Congratulations to the winner of the
Townsend Trophy for Outstanding Club
Member award Lynette O’Neill who was
44
Annual Report and Financial Statement of Accounts 2012
presented with a spectacular visual
presentation of the wonderful times she has
had at the club over the years, great to see
such a deserving person win this award.
Next year will be upon us before we know
it and we look forward some exciting things
happening that will hopefully help move the
club forward. We are always looking for new
players, coaches and committee members so
if anyone is interested or is aware of players
who need a club to play for or want to be
part of a great committee in 2013 then please
contact Stacey Hosking on 021 1616 349 or
[email protected], we would
love to hear from you.
On behalf of the committee I would like to
thank everyone that has supported the netball
club this year and we look forward to the 2013
season

WESTMINSTER SPORTS INCORPORATED
‘Growing Sport, Serving the Community’
Collaboration and partnerships with kindred
groups, schools and the community are
critical to sustainability in grass roots sport.
Not only do these relationships better utilise
existing resources facilities and infrastructure
it also provides the critical mass (numbers)
and wider reach that the funders and
stakeholders put value in and financially
support.
The value of working together cannot be
underestimated.
For the financial year a total of $87, 456
funding/grants was procured by Westminster
Sports CEO for the rugby club’s purposes
along with sponsorships totalling $32,406. It is
prudent to point out that again at least a third
of the funding secured goes into maintenance
of the fields. The Club still has to decide how
it will manage a total replacement of the turf in
the next 2-3 years and if an artificial surface is
worth consideration.
Westminster Sports building plans have
recently been re-tabled with the Community
Board and Council staff and we have
engaged a project manager to progress
our plans. The multi purpose sports and
community facility is still being advocated –
however the design, type and size of structure
may change as budget and our community
needs are determined along with how it fits
with the Council’s and sport sector planned
rebuild of sports infrastructure across the city.
Our KiwiSport Coordinator continues to do an
excellent job working with a cluster of six local
primary and intermediate schools providing
daily quality sport and physical activity
opportunities and events for the students and
schools whilst also providing professional
46
Annual Report and Financial Statement of Accounts 2012
guidance and direction for the schools in this
space.
In Feb 2012 our Co Managed Sports
Coordinator at Mairehau High School
commenced. This position is in partnership
with the school and provides a near full time
resource in the school which is enabling us to
influence and have more input into how sport
and physical activity is delivered in this school
setting. Whilst we have managed to provide
access to a host of new sport opportunities
through our contacts and networks with our
member clubs and other organizations in our
local community getting the transfer of these
students to link with the clubs outside of the
school hours is not as easy to do. With some
new initiatives in the pipeline for term 4 and
2013 we should hopefully see this situation
change!
In the past year WSI also successfully
delivered a number of school holiday sport
based/specific programmes for youth (aged
11-17) in this community.
We also await the outcomes of recent Ministry
of Education announcements of mergers,
closures etc of some schools which we work
in to see what effects that will have on our
operations going forward.
Westminster Sports wishes to thank CFC for
its provision of office space and access to
facilities along with the contribution at Board
level of Alan Trent.

FINANCIAL REPORT
I present this report in Nick Martin’s absence. Nick stood down from his position as Financial
Director on the Executive earlier in the year for personal reasons. We are hopeful that Nick will,
in time, take up a position on the Executive again.
As I noted in my Chairman’s Report, this is the first time, since 2004, that the Club’s Financial
Statements have reported a surplus for the year - $38,894.
This is a very pleasing result but before we get too excited about it we need to identify what
factors have contributed to this result and we also need to ensure that we achieve a similar
result next year.
Motels
This is the first year that a full twelve months trading from the Motels has been included in
the Club’s accounts. Also, the occupancy of the motels has been favourably affected by the
shortage of accommodation in Christchurch. How long this will continue is unknown but while it
does the Club must take advantage of it.
Bar, Restaurant & Shop
Even though sales were down on last year’s the net trading profit increased. This was an
excellent result.
Football Administration
Running Football this year cost $17,407 compared to last year when it cost $54,540. This is
all thanks to a substantial increase in grants and sponsorship, and a donation from the Junior
Boys section of the Club.
Dividend
A dividend of $20,000 was received from CFC World Co Ltd. No dividend was received in 2011.
Grants
Grants received this year are on a par to last year’s. The only difference being that, rather
than being mainly for Grounds Maintenance, this year they have been mainly for Football
Administration.
My thanks go to Charles Knibb for his continued work behind the scenes in preparing the
monthly Financial Reports and in preparing these Financial Statements.
