MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Parents and Carers,
Welcome to Week 4 of Term 2! With NAPLAN behind us for another year we look forward to
seeing some results and school data coming back in the coming months. Well done to all our
Year 5 and Year 3 students sitting the National Assessment in 2017. When supporting
students during the tests I could see their best efforts were being made throughout the week.
Thank you to the P&C for providing a Mothers’ Day stall last week. I’m sure our Gowrie mums
were well looked after last Sunday!
School Reports and Parent/Teacher Interviews
In Week 9 families will receive the new Gowrie student reports highlighting academic and
social growth across Semester 1. The reports will reflect progress against the Australian
Curriculum outcomes and aim to provide a comprehensive analysis of your child’s
development. In order to get the most out of this new document we will also be offering
parent/teacher interviews in Week 10 to discuss any questions or concerns you might have.
Please look out for additional information coming home soon with instructions to book
interviews through a new online process.
Tennent Assembly Week 4
On Friday this week Tennent will be hosting our school assembly. There will be ribbons
handed out from the Athletics carnival and the Term 2 Gowrie Cup will be awarded. I look
forward to seeing family and friends on the day from 12:40pm.
The Future of Education – Community Consultation
Recently the ACT Education Directorate launched The Future of Education, a consultation
process looking to capture stakeholders perceptions and wishes for our education system.
Soon we will be calling for parent and community members to meet with facilitators here at
school to capture your thoughts. This conversation will address your wishes and ideas for the
future of government schools in the ACT, looking at the big picture beyond Gowrie. All
comments and thoughts are welcome as our facilitators aim to capture and feed forward your
information to the Education Directorate.
Students and education leadership staff have already contributed to the conversation with a
wider view now being sought with classroom teachers, administrative staff, support staff,
parents, carers and community partners being offered a chance to engage with the
conversation. A date for the parent and community consultation evening will be published
soon with the meeting to take place at Gowrie Primary School. I look forward to hearing your
thoughts as we shape future decisions for our education system together.

Early Years Enrichment Program
Gowrie hosted the Early Years Enrichment Program for preschool students this week. The
focus for the day was numeracy in the early years with a safari theme. We had preschool
students from a variety of Tuggeranong schools attending the day. I would like to sincerely
thank Shannon Staszak for coordinating this special event. I would also like to especially thank
Amanda Horne, Lyn Cleaver and Wendy Marlowe for organising and teaching the three
numeracy enrichment workshops. A fun day was had by all!!
2017 ASG National Excellence in Teaching Awards (ASG NEiTA) - Reminder
Gowrie has so many fabulous teachers who work in our school and now you can nominate an
outstanding teacher for the 2017 ASG National Excellence in Teaching Awards (ASG NEiTA).
They deserve to be recognised and awarded for their tremendous contribution, but we need
your help. Nominations for the awards close on 3 July 2017. To nominate go to:

NEWS FROM PRESCHOOL - GECKOS
OUR NEW TURF! With a very big thank you to everyone who was involved in the first phase of
our yard upgrade! Keira, Shane, Tanya and their companies, Mrs Garland and all our other
helpers have done a fantastic job in laying the new turf. It’s such a great space now and the
children are very much enjoying the use of the new turf for a variety of activities.
BACK TO WORK! We are very much into the full swing of our term 2 program and we are
focusing on our name writing, pencil grip, alphabet letters and pre handwriting activities –
including fine motor learning experiences.
PRESCHOOL BUS WASH TOUR! Last week we had a fabulous time with the Rosellas on our
local area bus ride around Tuggeranong and to the bus depot. The bus wash was very exciting
and we enjoyed assisting Jo (our guide) in helping our bus driver, Dean, get around the
suburbs while we played Spotto! Jo said we were the BEST preschoolers she’s ever had!

READY! SET! GO! We had a lot of fun learning to run in races so we could participate in the
school Cross Country event! We were super-fast!
3/4SH Buddies: One of our favourite fortnightly events is when we spend time with Mrs
Harding and 3/4SH. This term the children have been working on a Buddy Poster together!
You will see these up around Play Room 1 and Lambrigg soon!
PRESCHOOL SUBCOMMITTEE: It was a lovely day at our Preschool’s Harvey Norman BBQ to
raise money for this year’s preschool groups. Thanks to The Lake Tuggeranong Lions Club for
supporting and assisting our 2017 Preschool Subcommittee. The team raised over $600.
THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO HELPED AND TO EVERYONE WHO WENT AND BRUOGHT A
SAUSAGE!

NEWS FROM KINDERGARTEN
Kindergarten have had a busy few weeks since the holidays!
KCL have been
working hard with Ms.
Pasfield. Ms. Pasfield
will return during
term three for a 6
week teaching block.
We have begun our new unit in History, called “In our
Shoes”. In Our Shoes focuses on exploring students’
own family histories.
Kindergarten have been exploring STEM principles.
STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering
and Maths. The classes have been using different
materials to explore balance and stability.
During our Gross Motor program
both classes have been focusing on
fundamental movement skills that
can be used in different contexts. We
have worked on our balance, core
muscle strength and ball skills
(throwing, kicking and catching).
Thanks for reading and we look forward to the rest of the semester!
Lyn Cleaver and Kimberley Connell
