Hello year 7!
In this year’s summer exam, you will be sitting a non-fiction reading
paper. This is made up of two non-fiction texts and your job will be to analyse
them and compare them.
In preparation for this, you will need to do some revision at home; for this to
be successful, you will need to know certain things:
 What should I revise?
 How can I revise?
 What are my teachers looking for?
What should I revise?
 Re-read your marked draft assessments in your exercise book – see
what target your teacher has given you
 The top tips for non-fiction analysis (see below)
Top tips for non-fiction analysis
1. You should use quotation, explanation when analysing language.
2. Maximum quotation length should be 8 words – no more!
3. The texts are usually there to persuade us or to give a particular
impression of something. Focus on how the text is persuasive or what
impressions it gives. That is your explanation.
4. Track through the text from beginning to end when analysing it.
How can I revise?
 Read some non-fiction texts so you know more about what they will be
like. This will be allowed in your reading time at school
 Practise answering sample questions – your teacher will provide these
for you
 Go online. Find two texts about similar things and compare them. How
are they similar? How are they different?
What are my teachers looking for?
 That you have tried your hardest in the exam
 That you find enough pieces of information (for example, 5 marks = 5
pieces of information needed)
 That you quote from the texts to support the things you are saying
 That you can show how non-fiction texts are similar or different and
compare them

Notes on the stave
To help us remember where the notes go we can use the rhymes: ‘Every
Good Boy Deserves Football’ & ‘FACE goes in the space’.
Musical alphabet
The notes of the musical alphabet are: CDEFGABC.
There are only seven letters and then in starts again. Remember that the
musical alphabet always starts on C.
