Snow Days Could

This year, Hampshire High School
has a new traffic light.
“The new traffic light makes traffic
leaving and coming more organized.
The reason for putting the light down
there is to make it safer as you come and
leave,” said Erino Leone, assistant
(Continued on page 3)
Recently the West Virginia State Department of Education passed a new
policy that requires schools to make up
every single hour and school day missed
due to inclement weather.
According to assistant principal
Camella Hardinger, the policy was created because students were getting behind in their education.
“I think it’s a good idea because you
do miss a lot on those snow days, and
you’re getting behind, and that cuts into
your education for the next year because
if you don’t get to the standards for one
year that are required for the next year,
then it gets you further behind,” said
Hardinger.
If enough snow days and twohour delays occur, the school year
could extend to June 30, and that
wasn’t very popular with students at
HHS.
“That’s absolutely ridiculous,”
said junior Ashley Mumaw. “It’s not
our fault that it snows; we shouldn’t
have to waste our summer because
of bad weather.”
Mike Coleman, Hampshire
County’s test coordinator, was confident that senior graduation 2015
would not be moved due to snow
days.

Monarch Learning Center Students Donate to
Needy Families

Staff Writer
The Monarch Learning Center
students of Hampshire High School
collected coats for South Elk Garden
United Methodist Church within a two
week period.
HHS aide Kim Poland said, “The
students up there do amazing things, and
I’m proud of what they have collected.”
The students set a goal of collecting 30
coats in two weeks. The students
collected 96 coats. Not only did they go
over their goal, the students also used
their own money to purchase hats and
gloves.
These kids help out of the goodness
of their hearts. President of the Monarch
Kim Poland thanks Shawn Staub for the Monarch Learning Center’s
donations to South Elk Garden United Methodist Church.
Student Council Shawn Staub said, “We
help because it’s the right thing to do. It
helps us change society and also helps
people that are needy and could use the
money for more important things.”
The South Elk United Methodist
Church wasn’t the only organization
to benefit from the donations.
Students get community service
hours from helping out, and the
experience also helps change how
people look at them.
Vice president of the Monarch
Student Council Steffan Steinemann
said, “We not only help to help them
but to help our reputation and show
we are not as bad as some think.”
The coat drive isn’t the only drive
that these students help out with.
They also go to the nursing home,
clean up after football games, and
assist with many other activities in
the community.

Should "Begging" Have an Age Limit?
Shayna Hepner
Editor-in-Chief
Every October brings the promise of
chilly weather, pumpkin-spiced whatever, and Halloween. With Halloween
comes trick-or -treating, and with trickor-treating comes angry adolescents
complaining about not being able to go
trick-or-treating due age limit restrictions on the activity.
Many towns, cities, and communities
that host trick-or -treating put an age
limit on begging for candy in ludicrous
outfits (trick-or-treating). If individuals
handing out candy suspect the kid in
front of them (dressed up as whatever
creepy/ cute/ weird *insert noun here*)
to be older than the age limit enforced,
that individual can refuse to give the kid
(or adult) candy. Now I personally have
never experienced this discrimination,
but I’ve heard one too many stories
about people being refused candy for being
“too old."
I can understand why there is an age
limit on trick-or-treating. Older folks don’t
want to spend a large amount of money on
candy that they don’t even get to eat, but I
still think it’s unfair to those few who want
to continue trick-or-treating after the age of
13.
Trick-or-treating has become the main focus of Halloween. When you think of Halloween, what do you automatically think
of? Going trick-or-treating and eating candy
until you go into a diabetic coma is something that comes to my mind. When trick-
2
or-treating isn’t an option because
you’re “too old,” you feel deflated, and
Halloween isn’t so much fun anymore.
It’s similar to that feeling you get when
you find out that your mom -your own
mother- has just thrown away the
teddy bear you took with you everywhere as a child. It sucks, and it hurts;
trick-or-treating should be a freedom
allowed to anyone, any age.
Catch That Table
Tina Heward
Staff Writer
As most of the students and teachers at Hampshire High have noticed,
there are a lot of changes this year. One
of these changes is the new lunch tables
in the cafeteria. The tables are nice, but
they have their disadvantages as well.
It’s nice to be able to see who you are
talking to because that is what we all
wanted, right? It feels good to be able
to sit in a circle. It makes you feel closer
to your friends because you can actually hold a conversation without having to lean over people to talk; however,
there seems to be no room for everyone
to sit. Some students try to stand or sit
against the walls, and on some occasions that is the students' preference, but
it’s hard to do when teachers and principals
tell them to find a seat at the tables. I think
the tables are nice, but teachers should put
themselves in the place of the students. How
would you feel if someone were yelling at
you to sit down everyday, even though
there is not room? Most teachers do not
want to hear this excuse. They say, “Oh,
I’m sure there is room; you just have to find
room.” The honest truth is that if you aren’t
one of the first few to get to the cafeteria,
then chances are, there REALLY is no room.
Once again, I ask teachers to put themselves
in our position. Yes, you may have
lunch duty, but you do not have to
breathe down our necks. Take a moment and think about it. Sometimes
you have to put yourself in another
person’s position to understand how
he or she feels, and until you do, there
is no way that you will be able to understand the whole situation.
Pull up Your Pants
Katie Sherve
Staff Writer
Many students at Hampshire High
have very strong opinions about the
school dress code. In my opinion, parts
of the dress code are extreme while
other parts are reasonable.
My first problem is that shorts have
to meet strict requirements. Shorts and
skirts have to be a dollar bill's length
from the top of your knees, which may
be reasonable for any short girl but unfair to girls with long legs. For tall girls,
it’s kind of impossible to find shorts that
long that they would actually like.
Another problem with the dress code
is the leggings policy. Shirts worn with
leggings should have to cover the butt,
but the school policy says that the shirts
worn with leggings should be finger-tip
length.
While I don’t agree with the shorts
and leggings policy, not all rules are unreasonable.
Seeking Letters to the Editor
The Trojaneer staff is accepting letters
to the editor. If you would like to respond to an article or editorial, or if
you would like to share your thoughts
on an issue, please submit your letter
to Ms. Raley in room 120. Letters should
be fewer than 200 words and must include your full name. Letters may be edited for clarity, grammar and libel.
I understand students not being allowed
to wear pajamas; pajamas don’t present a
good image for the students or the school.
Sweatpants are different than pajamas;
sweatpants are there for you when you’re
sexy and you know it but too lazy to show
it. Another thing I don't like to see is boys
showing their boxers- they shouldn't be allowed to do this! Pull your pants up. Please!
Now let’s talk about shirts. Another thing
that presents a bad image is showing your
bra straps. Bra straps hanging out can
look trashy, some shirts that show a
little shoulder aren’t that bad.
More clothing items that present
bad image are shirts with obscene images or words on them. Obviously
they’re banned, and they should be; it’s
a school, do you really think they’re going to let you wear that?

DECA Strives for Success
Freshman Academy Comes to HHS
Brittany Brown
Staff Writer
One of the newest additions to
Hampshire High School this year is
Freshman Academy.
Freshman Academy is a system of
ninth grade level core classes all
arranged into one wing of the school. The
purpose of Freshman Academy is to
allow teachers to work together to help
any students having trouble in class; it
also maintains a comfortable learning
environment for the students.
Teachers and students find it easier
to have all the classes in one wing.
Social Studies teacher Robert Gunther
said, "The benefits are that you can
actually get to talk to other teachers to
compare how well students are doing in
class, and it's better because you couldn't
do that before. You can now find out how
to help them get used to the high school
experience."
Last year, freshmen and
upperclassmen were all mixed together
in classes. Now, freshmen can all be in
the same areas.
English Teacher Jacob Pike said,
"There's a lot more time to communicate
with the ninth grade colleagues and
work on trying to sync things up. If
Mrs. Edgell is working on the Greeks, I
will try to work something out with the
Odyssey."
The ninth grade students of
Hampshire seem to like Freshman
Academy because it is easier to get to
classes, and they get to meet new people
in their grade. Some feel more
comfortable being in only freshman
classes, while others would rather
mingle with the upperclassmen as well.
Although the school has not provided
iPads for the freshmen yet, they are
planning to provide them before the end
of 2014.
"They will make it easier to type
notes and stuff," freshman Kalesha
Pierce said of the iPads.
Traffic Light (continued from page 1)
principal.
Principal Jeffrey Woofter said, “The
speed of leaving and coming is about the
same rate as it was last year.”
Woofter feels that this new light will
make the highway safer for students and
staff.
Math teacher Katrina Tiedeman
thinks the light helps students and staff
leave in a timely fashion.
Junior Austin Peacemakers hates the
fact that he now has to wait for all the
buses to leave before he can leave in a
car.
"I think it does get us out faster, but
when we don't have school, I think it's
kind of pointless," senior Emilynn
Corbin said about the light.
Members of DECA attended the Annual Fall Leadership Conference in
Ripley, W.Va. on Sept. 21 through Sept. 23. At the conference, members
participated in team-building activities.
After School Tutoring Enhances Education
Brittany Brown
Staff Writer
This year, Hampshire High offers an
after school tutoring program.
Students who attend tutoring sessions
are served a hot dinner and provided
with an activity bus for a ride home.
"Tutoring is a way to try to help
individual students to raise their scores.
Right now, we are a priority school, and
we need to get our test scores up," said
assistant principal Erino Leone.
Leone said the program may last all
year, since Principal Jeff Woofter obtained
a grant for bus transportation. The
average number of kids tutoring varies
from day to day.
Teachers find it easier and better for
students to focus on what they need help
doing in a certain class.
Spanish teacher and tutor Stephanie
Tison said, "I love tutoring, and I wish
more students did it. I love seeing a kid
get a better grade because they came to
tutoring and got the help they needed."
Freshman Johnanna Thomas has
noticed improvements in her grades as a
result of tutoring.
Freshman Courtney White said
tutoring helps her focus on her
homework and understand subjects better
than before.

New Vet Building Set to
Open this Fall
Tina Heward
Staff Writer
Hampshire High School's new
veterinary science building is scheduled
to open this fall.
"I have fought for this building since
2010; I am so excited. I am glad that my
students will have new opportunities,"
said agriculture teacher Isaac Lewis.
Construction of the new $1.1 million,
4,800 square-foot building began in
April, according to Lewis. The building
will house one classroom, one lab, locker
rooms, and cat and dog kennels. This
building is the only one of its kind in the
whole state of West Virginia, and allows
students to do part time residency, said
Lewis.
"It's great for students because they
can graduate and go straight into the
workforce," assistant principal Camella
Hardinger said about the vet program.
Students are also excited about the
building.
Senior Catherine Largent said, "It will
be great experience."Largent also likes
that Lewis will be able to teach one on
one with the proper equipment.
Senior Sarah Thorne said, "It's a great
structure, and I can't wait for it." Thorne
likes that vets can come in and show the
students how to do procedures.
Although there is a lot of excitement
about the new building, some students
are concerned about the walking
distance to the new building since it is
located on the other side of the foreign
language building.
Dare to be Scared
Ayla Phillips
Staff Writer
Working at a haunted house is not a
typical after school activity, but several
Hampshire High School students love
doing it.
Six students volunteer at The House
of the Setting Sun, a haunted house in
Greenspring, W.Va. This organization is
run by Saundra Stinette. Stinette's
grandson, sophomore Justin Kirk has
been playing at the haunted house since
he was young, and he has been scaring
visitors for the past eight years.
The students who volunteer do more
than scare during the month of October.
Some go down after scaring season, which
begins in October, to help create the new
theme for the next year's haunted house.
The theme this year is Wendell Labs, a
spooky vampire laboratory.
Junior Samantha Fletcher helped with
the building of the house before the
season began.
Fletcher said, “I think volunteering
here helps people to build character
because you are so involved in the
testing dates may be moved depending
on the number of snow days, according
to Coleman.

Sophomore Ashley Divelbliss is a
vampire this season and has been
volunteering there for four years.
Divelbliss joined the haunted house after
being introduced to it by a friend.
The haunted house is a way for the
students to be creative and have fun with
their friends. It teaches them
responsibility. The haunted house is also
great way for students to fulfill their
volunteer hours required to graduate.
Sophomore Katlyn Brantner said,
“The fact that it is volunteer work does
not affect how much effort I put towards
it. I do my best no matter what.”
The House of the Setting Sun is open
weekends from Oct. 1 through Nov. 1.
In addition to walking through the
haunted house people can purchase
souvenirs in the gift shop or have their
pictures taken.
