A WELCOME FROM
OUR CHAIRMAN
A very warm welcome to Battle Festival
2016, again taking place throughout
October, throughout Battle.
2016 is a very special year for Battle being the 950th Anniversary of
the Battle of Hastings, which took place right here in the heart of town
and gave Battle its name. Major events are planned and Battle Festival
will mark this momentous occasion with the World Première of our
inspirational and topical opera, PUSH, which we’ve commissioned in
partnership with Glyndebourne, De La Warr Pavilion and the Root1066
Festival. The course of English history was changed forever here in Battle
and in this current era of major change for the UK, PUSH will demonstrate
the power of human kindness alongside peace, tolerance and togetherness
in times of challenge.
We are also delighted to announce the Primrose Piano Quartet, one of
the UK’s foremost chamber groups as our new ensemble-in-residence.
They will give three concerts over one weekend featuring popular classical
music for all ages. The Quartet was formed in 2004 and enjoys a busy
performing schedule in the UK and abroad with regular appearances at all
major London concert venues. We very much look forward to their events.
Battle Festival is a registered charity so I would like to give a very special
thanks to our sponsors and supporters who have again made this Festival
possible, with a particular mention for Arts Council England whose
backing has enabled us to keep ticket prices affordable and in many cases
free of charge.
The Festival this year has scheduled a whole range of eclectic events and I
do hope you will enjoy yourselves and attend as many of them as possible.
See you in Battle in October!

PUSH
Musicians from some of the UK’s major
orchestras will accompany a choir of 200
children and adults drawn from across 1066
Country. Mr Gronowski himself will be guest
of honour at the world première of this opera
inspired by his extraordinary life.
PUSH
Powerful new opera explores
themes of invasion, loss and
the redeeming power of
human goodness.
World Première of this inspirational opera,
specially commissioned for Battle Festival 2016
and the ROOT 1066 International Festival in
partnership with Glyndebourne and the De La
Warr Pavilion.
Taking inspiration from events that shaped our
history, PUSH explores themes of invasion, loss
and the redeeming power of human kindness.
Written by internationally acclaimed composer
Howard Moody, the opera is inspired by the
compelling, true story of Simon Gronowski,
who was pushed from a train bound for
Auschwitz by his mother in 1943. Yet the story
neither begins nor ends there. The narrative
also draws on various accounts of those who
have experienced refugee and prisoner status,
including events of 2016; ‘The Jungle’ in
Calais, the mass arrival of Syrian refugees into
Europe, and the scenes from the train stations
in Budapest as refugees were trapped whilst
trying to board trains.
04
Making its world première on Saturday 1
October at the De La Warr Pavilion, PUSH will
be performed by soloists James Newby (2016
winner of the Kathleen Ferrier Award), Mathew
Stiff and Tereza Gevorgyan.
This thrilling and innovatively staged
production is directed by Simon Iorio, staff
director at Glyndebourne, and the show is
designed by award-winning Ele Slade (‘Best
Costume Designer’ at the 2015 Off West End
Awards, for Usagi Yojimbo at Southwark
Playhouse). Following the première a semistaged version will be presented in Battle, at
St Mary’s Church on Saturday 8th October 2016.
A very special project that sees world class
performers working alongside community
participants to present a remarkable story.

“PUSH is a story
of our times,
full of themes of hope
and togetherness
as well as separation
and fear.”
PUSH is supported by
Arts Council England, Hastings Borough
Council, Rother District Council, East Sussex
Arts Partnership, Chalk Cliff Trust, Magdalen
& Lasher Charity, Battle Partnership.
PUSH is a Battle Festival production in
partnership with Glyndebourne and the

International Festival.
“wonderful: marvellous
for opera- and musiclovers, and helpful for
the young generations,
against the barbarity
and for a better world
of peace, democracy,
tolerance and friendship
between men.”
“PUSH demonstrates
that even in the most
challenging of times,
we can be a strong force
of healing, forgiveness,
unity and optimism.”

Fake Thackray – an
evening without
Jake Thackray with
John Watterson
John Watterson
Jake Thackray’s songs are
exquisitely funny, satirical,
incisive, irreverent, witty and
gloriously un-PC. And sometimes
all of these at the same time!
Jake was a one off; his poetry broke the
rules yet worked beautifully. He was a true
craftsman of the English language and his
legacy of scores of wonderful songs continues
to entertain and delight audiences of all
ages today.
John’s appreciation and love of Jake
Thackray’s music is obvious to his audience.
John’s performance is a celebration of the man
that was Jake Thackray – his life, his work and
his genius. John is a talented guitarist and
vocalist and has that engaging quality that
makes you want to listen to his performance.

Alter Ego Gallery in Abbey Court
is a hive of work by local and
regional artists, both established

month-long celebration of 1066
Country artists in the 950th
anniversary year.
Kerry Bennett is an artist
with a passionate and deep
appreciation for flora, fauna
and the natural world.
Born in Argentina and growing up in Brazil
she became enchanted with the nature on
her doorstep. Painting from an early age she
strove to capture the sub-tropical essence
of her surroundings, with works combining
both colour and nature. Kerry’s itinerant
lifestyle continued when she moved to the
United States to study fine art and ceramics
at Palomar College, California. Having
successfully completed her studies she
made one more move to settle in the
United Kingdom, her ancestral home,
where she continues to paint the natural
world as she sees it.

Brothers in Art –
In Print
Paul and John Nash
Having grown up in
Buckinghamshire and London
under the shadow of their
mother’s mental illness, the
brothers Paul and John Nash
emerged simultaneously as
artists, Paul tutored at the
Slade and John ‘a natural’, first
exhibiting together in 1913 at the
Dorien Leigh Gallery, London.
Both brothers were landscape painters, both
explored wood engraving and book illustration
and were influenced by their childhood and
the trauma of two World Wars. Both were
appointed Official War Artists in their careers,
Paul first during WW1, John later. However,
whereas Paul, the self-assured older brother
went on to experiment with abstraction and
surrealism and is now widely recognised as a
major figure in twentieth century British art,
John concentrated on his botanical interests
and painting the English countryside he loved.

The Ladykillers tells the classic
black comedy tale of a sweet
little old lady, alone in her house,
pitted against a gang of criminal
misfits who will stop at nothing…
Award-winning dance theatre
company Protein presents a
playful, immersive show that
explores our relationship with
food in an evening of indulgence,
nostalgia and mischief.
From Elvis to selfies: A fast
paced race through seven
decades of British Pop Culture.
Jam-packed with hits, Blast from the Past is a
fast-paced race through seven decades of the
blockbusters and bestsellers we all remember,
and the fads and fashions we might prefer to
forget. Set to a soundtrack of chart toppers
from 1952 to the present day, the show honours
British pop culture and its ability to unite us all
in weird and wonderful ways.
Somewhere between a dance performance,
sketch show, TV gameshow and the ultimate
compilation album, Blast from the Past will
have you feeling nostalgic, singing along,
laughing out loud and playing a swift game of

Posing as amateur musicians, Professor Marcus
and his gang rent rooms in the lopsided house
of sweet but strict Mrs Wilberforce. The villains
plot to involve her unwittingly in Marcus’
brilliantly conceived heist job. The police are
left stumped but Mrs Wilberforce becomes wise
to their ruse and Marcus concludes that there
is only one way to keep the old lady quiet. With
only her parrot, General Gordon, to help her,
Mrs W. is alone with five desperate men. But
who will be forced to face the music?

Transforming the venue into a dining room,
with themed tables set around a performing
space, audience members are welcomed upon
arrival by two host dancers. The show gradually
emerges from this informal gathering and
develops into an unusual, humorous dinner
party that uses song, dance and text to engage
with stories and issues around food and eating.
Protein’s performers will prompt thoughts
about what we eat and where it comes from, as
well as exploring the sensory aspects of food:
the nostalgic reminiscences of a grandmother’s
recipe; life around the family table; or the
sometimes irresistible temptation to help
ourselves to another person’s leftovers.

History & Heritage
The Battle of Hastings
happened right here
in the heart of Battle
950 years ago and gave
the town its name. It
changed the course of
English history forever
and, fittingly, there are
many events planned
in 1066 Country
throughout October
to mark the date.
We at Battle Festival are producing a truly
inspiring and topical opera, PUSH, and Battle
Abbey itself will host a major anniversary
re-enactment amongst their many events.
Battle Museum has scheduled numerous
events and exhibitions throughout the
anniversary year and the specially formed
Concorde 1066 has programmed a full day
of events for the big day itself, 14th October.
Don’t miss the many parades, military bands,
exhibitions, tapestries, talks, even the sighting
of Halley’s Comet on the day before the battle
is covered. It’s all happening in Battle!

The Battle of Hastings:
950th Anniversary
Lecture
The 1066@battlemuseum exhibition uses
visual imagery in mixed media to convey what
it was like at the Battle of Hastings in 1066.
Brigadier Hugh Willing
For the Battle and District
Historical Society (BDHS)
Unique tapestries drawn from the Bayeux
Tapestry themes show what people at the time
thought happened. Of particular note is the
1818 “Stothard” tapestry watercolour set, the
only one on display in the UK.
The time of this lecture - 13
October at 7.30 pm – was, exactly
950 years before, the eve of the
Battle of Hastings.
The famous “Battle of Hastings” axe head is on
display complete with a touch and feel replica.
A diorama provides an overview of the progress
of the battle.
With his military experience, Hugh will
re-examine this most famous battle in
English history and look at some of the
controversies that surround it.

Alderney Tapestry
comes to Battle
Battle Museum of
Local History
The Bayeux Tapestry is long thought to
be incomplete and so, in 2012-2013, the
islanders from Alderney, off the French coast,
embroidered their own three metre long finish
to the Bayeux Tapestry.
Why did Duke William really want to invade
England; can we be sure of how many ships
and troops were in his invasion force, and
did he actually land at Pevensey or was it
nearer to Rye?
Concorde 1066
October 14th 2016 is the 950th
anniversary of the Battle of
Hastings, the battle which
changed English history for ever,
and gave Battle its name.
To mark this event, there will be a parade
of over 600 local schoolchildren on Battle’s
High Street at 2pm, a multi-denominational
commemorative service in St Mary’s Parish
Church at 3.30pm, and a military band
procession on Battle High Street from 5.30pm.
This will be followed by a ‘sunset ceremony’
and lowering of the flags

Battle Community
Tapestry at PURE
Autumn Art Fair
Tina Greene
The Battle Community Tapestry
is a 3m long design in the style
of the Bayeux
Tapestry showing the development of the
town of Battle after October 1066, until the
founding of the first church for the town,
St Mary’s, in 1115.
It is an embroidery on linen, using wool from
Bayeux and the same stitches as those used
950 years ago. It has eight “scenes” showing
the “why”, “where” and “how” our town came
into existence.
Many of the designs are similar to those in the
Bayeux Tapestry itself, such as the Inter-lacing
trees; Aesop’s fables; history depicted and the
Latin script, which have been checked by the
Battle and District Historical Society.

Gifts, a ten year project
(2005-2015), was made
with the gift economy (ie
no exchange of money)
by artist Clare Whistler.
Raised by a family of wolves
since birth, Mowgli (Neel Sethi)
must leave the only home he’s
ever known when the fearsome
tiger Shere Khan (Idris Elba)
unleashes his mighty roar.
About eight gifts that were traditionally given
to a new child – Egg for Life, Coal for Heat,
Evergreen for Eternity, Salt for Health, Candle
for Light, Bread for Food, Coin for Wealth and
a Silver Ring for Love throughout Life. Made in
collaborations with other artists, these ‘gifts’
were offered and received in intimate, invited
events in unusual locations.
Guided by a no-nonsense panther (Ben
Kingsley) and a free-spirited bear (Bill Murray),
the young boy meets an array of jungle
animals, including a slithery python and a
smooth-talking ape. Along the way, Mowgli
learns valuable life lessons as his epic journey
of self-discovery leads to fun and adventure.
Film maker Nichola Bruce has interpreted the
film footage of the eight events shot over the
years by different filmmakers. The weather,
gestures, places and the participants combine
in a strange series of journeys unearthing what
these objects, offered as a gift, may hold. Clare
Whistler has also created a book, Gifts, a record
of the Gift Project alongside essays about gifts,
ritual, utopian ideals and the gift economy. The
film was financed by Arts Council England and
Hastings Borough Council.

Paul Sedgwick
Paul Sedgwick is a local stained
glass artist working out of a
workshop on a farm in Battle,
using age old techniques.
It’s crammed with beautiful panels in various
states of repair or manufacture. He is most
inspired by the sea and rural scenes: “East
Sussex is endlessly beautiful, I see something
new every day”
Paul created the stained glass Battle

Pen & Ink Drawings
Lino Printing
Steve Hodson
Kerry Farmer
(Inky Fingers Emporium)
Inky Fingers are Steve Hodson
and Polly Lewis, Steve does
the illustrations. Polly does
everything else!!
Come for a fun workshop where you will be
guided by Steve and Polly to create pen and
ink drawings.
Steve was born in Hastings and, of course,
learnt about the Battle of Hastings from
an early age which might explain his deep
passion for the battle and why he lives in
Battle now. This will act as the main focus
and inspiration for your drawings. But of
course Inky Fingers don’t just do historical
illustrations, they can illustrate any subject
in their own style. Come along and see what
you can create!
Kerry has lived in Hastings for 25
years and has always loved living
by the sea. Some of her passions
are photography and travelling.
She has produced mono prints, lino prints
and screen prints but it was lino printing
that really excited her due to its simplicity
and bold results. Most of Kerry’s lino
prints are produced using her own original
photographs of the local area and of places
she has travelled. She completed her
Foundation Diploma in Art and Design
in 2008 and has continued to create prints
which she sells on Etsy for the past 2 years.
In this workshop Kerry will use her expertise
and experience of printing and a step by
step guide to all viewers and participants to
help you design and create beautiful prints.

THANK YOU
Supporters of Battle Festival
Generous sponsorship and funding has yet again
allowed us to schedule a wonderfully diverse
month of cultural activities. We have been able
to subsidise or waive ticket prices in many
instances and, in so doing, can help open up
the arts to an audience that may otherwise not
experience it. For this we owe many individuals
and organisations a great deal of thanks.
Battle has an incredible volunteer force of
organisations, clubs and individuals who do
unending work for the good of the town.
We would particularly like to thank Battle Film
Club, Battle Historical Society, Battle Museum, St
Mary’s Church Church and Battle Baptist Church.
Also staff at Claverham Community College,
Battle & Langton CE Primary School and Battle
Memorial Halls.
This year in particular we have partnered with organisations and
performers of national and international repute and we thank
them for their participation and faith in us.
Thanks also to our new ensemble in residence, The Primrose
Piano Quartet, for performing a wonderful taste of October's
events at a fund-raising concert in the summer.
As always, thanks to the many corporate, media, public body and
individual sponsors and friends who have donated money, time,
expertise and advice - we thank you most sincerely.
Thanks as ever to our Patrons for all they do and also to all
our performers, artists, artisans, mentors, host families and
volunteers. To all our venues, thank you for having us and in most
cases, for having us back again and again.
To all our partners and families whose ongoing support allows us
the freedom and time to organise and arrange such a major event.
Finally, thanks to all of you who attend our events - we hope you
enjoy the events, the town, the people and the experience, and
that we can welcome you back again in 2017.
Battle Town Council
34
Outside of Battle we pay particular thanks to The Fairlight Trust,
Education Futures Trust and Rye Studio School. The adults and
schoolchildren throughout 1066 Country and beyond taking part in
PUSH have given a huge amount of time in return for the opportunity
to perform and this will of course have had a knock on effect on
parents, teachers, drivers etc. We thank you all most sincerely.
Special thanks also to Robert Gee, Laura Cooke, Fiona Cornford,
Dinah Lampitt, John Wooding, Cassia Friello, Roy Holland and Tracy
Dixon for all they do and to everyone whose contribution has made
Battle Festival possible. There are far more than we could ever
mention but they are not forgotten.
Friends of Battle Festival Scheme
As a registered charity, the festival is funded by grants and
donations which means we can keep ticket prices lower than we
otherwise could, and even offer some events free of charge. But
we couldn't do it without your support and our Friends of Battle
Festival scheme. Please consider becoming a Friend in whatever
capacity you can, from individual donations to corporate
sponsorship - it all really does add up and make a difference.
