
Create a simile for each of the target vocabulary terms in the space provided. Underline the target
term. Then, explain what is being compared in the simile.
EXAMPLE

Simile: The watch dog is as ferocious as a Bengal tiger.
The watch dog is being compared to a Bengal tiger. They are both ferocious.
VOCABULARY PRACTICE
1. Simile: John’s adversary for the debate was as hard-hitting as the linebacker, Ray Lewis, on Sunday.
Explanation: John’s opponent is being compared to Ray Lewis—both are hard hitting—one
in their speech, the other in their hitting.
2. Simile: My dad’s foresight for picking the right fishing hole is like having my fortune read.
Explanation: Dad’s ability of picking a fishing hole where the fish are biting is being compared to having
a fortune read and knowing the future.
3. Simile: Being interrupted over and over was as exasperating as the line at the DMV.
Explanation: Being interrupted is being compared to the DMV line—both are frustrating.
4. Simile: The criteria for building the tree house was as overwhelming as having tests in every class on a
Friday.
Explanation: The plans for the tree house is being compared to too much testing right before a
weekend—they are both overwhelming.
5. Simile: The critique for the new restaurant was as subjective as a bride picking out her wedding dress.
Explanation: Restaurant critiques should be unbiased, and is being compared to a highly personal
choice.
