Chemistry: Quarter 2 - Indianapolis Public Schools

Science Parent Resource Companion Chemistry Quarter 2
Quarter 2 Chemistry
Unit 1: Describe how the distribution of electrons within an atom determines its interactions with other atoms; describe the attractive forces between
molecules and their effect on chemical and physical properties. (C3.1, C3.2, C3.3): October 20-November 21
Students Objectives:
 Create electron dot diagrams based on the position of elements in the periodic table; model how electron transfer forms ionic bonds between metal
and non-metal atoms; model how electrons are shared to form covalent bonds; compare and contrast metallic bonds to ionic and covalent bonds; draw
particle diagrams of each type of bond. (C3.1)

Explain how cations and anions form; identify the electrical charge of an ionic compound; model the octet rule in formation of covalent bonds; identify
the different types of bonds that can be formed in covalent bonds (single, double, triple, etc.) based on the octet rule. (C3.2)

Describe the representative units that define molecular compounds and ionic compounds; describe three properties of ionic and covalent compounds;
explain how the strength of a covalent bond is related to its bond dissociation strength. (C3.3)
Unit 2 Based on chemical formulas, classify the names and structures of simple compounds, both ionic and covalent. (C3.4, C3.5): December 1 – December 12
Student Objectives:
 Build Lewis-structures of simple compounds and translate them into 3-D structures; describe the relationship between atomic and molecular orbitals;
describe how VSPER theory helps predict the shape of molecules; and build VSPER models of simple molecules. (C3.4)

Evaluate chemical formulas to determine the formula name; evaluate chemical names to determine the chemical formula; identify incorrectly formed
compounds based on the formula name; identify incorrectly formed names based on the formula compounds. (C3.5)
