The Value of the Volunteer…
The Manager of Palliative Care New South Wales’ Volunteer
Support Services Program, Alex Huntir, has carried out an
extensive investigation of palliative care volunteers
throughout the state.
Mr Huntir said that researching
the activities of volunteer services
highlighted the diversity of
organisations and the roles their
members performed.
“Volunteers validate
the value of a
service to the
community ..."
“Volunteers reveal something of the relationship between
individual services and the community they tend. We
say that the presence of a volunteer service is like a
frog in the pond – if the pond is healthy then the frog
will stay. In the same way if your relationship with
the community is healthy, the community will want to
volunteer with you, as a gesture of support,” Mr Huntir
said.
He told last month’s ‘Dying to Know’ conference in Dubbo that
the value of a volunteer was less about what the volunteer did
and much more about the way it was done. “The ability to
bring peace into a person’s situation is really valuable,” he
said.
He said volunteers engaged with the philosophy of
palliative care, which meant building compassionate
communities, helping people make sense of their journey
and socialising the experience of death and dying.
Volunteers played a key part in reducing social isolation
which meant reduced stress, and in turn reduced demand for
services.
“Volunteers validate the value of a service to the
community and the health of the community’s
relationship with the service.
I couldn’t have said this better myself.
Sharyn Turney, CEO

Coming to Fernlea
House gives us all
purpose and pleasure.
We’ve spent a cosy
few weeks sharing
stories about our winter
experiences, singing
wintery songs and dressing up in our PJs
and as Royals. We have also been singing
a selection of songs after lunch and doing
so well we could form a choir!
Pajama Week!
What fun we had
wearing our PJs to
Fernlea House this
week. Check out
Marion’s cow onesie!
Congratulations to all the
volunteers who finished their
Fernlea Training last week.
