Educator’s Guide to
Beyond Planet Earth Augmented Reality Lesson
Overview:
This lesson gives students a tour of the Beyond Planet Earth exhibit at the American Museum of Natural History.
Students will use iDevices to scan targets, which are viewed as 3-D animations. Students will read the accompanying
passages and answer questions.
Grades and Subject Areas:
Grade 4
Subject Science Astronomy
Objectives:
Students will:
! Use iPods or iPads to scan targets
! Collaborate with a partner
! Make careful observations of the animations
! Read passages and answer questions about astronomy
I Can Statements:
!
!
!
!
I can use an iPod or iPad to view an augmented reality target.
I can cooperate with my partner.
I can answer questions by carefully observing animations.
I can show what I know about the solar system by reading the passages and answering questions.

Curriculum Connections:
Alaska Content Standards:
Science:
The student demonstrates an understanding of the theories regarding the origin and evolution of the universe by:
[4] SD4.3 recognizing and using appropriate instruments of magnification (e.g., binoculars and telescopes)
[5] SD4.1 distinguishing between stars, planets, moons, comets, and meteors
Students develop an understanding that advancements in science depend on curiosity, creativity, imagination, and a
broad knowledge base by
[5] SG4.1 investigating that scientists’ curiosity led to advancements in science
Students develop an understanding that scientific knowledge is ongoing and subject to change as new evidence
becomes available through experimental and/or observational confirmation(s). SG3
Reading:
The student comprehends literal or inferred meaning from text by
[4] 2.2.4 Drawing conclusions based on information presented in the text (e.g., cause and effect, character
motivation)
!
!
ISTE Student Standards:
1. Creativity and Innovation
Students demonstrate creative thinking, construct knowledge, and develop innovative products and processes
using technology. Students:
c. use models and simulations to explore complex systems and issues
4. Critical Thinking, Problem Solving, and Decision Making
Students use critical thinking skills to plan and conduct research, manage projects, solve problems, and make
informed decisions using appropriate digital tools and resources. Students:
c. collect and analyze data to identify solutions and/or make informed decisions
6. Technology Operations and Concepts
Students demonstrate a sound understanding of technology concepts, systems, and operations. Students:
a. understand and use technology systems
ISTE Teacher Standards:
3.
Model Digital-Age Work and Learning
Teachers exhibit knowledge, skills, and work processes representative of an innovative professional in a global
and digital society. Teachers:
d. model and facilitate effective use of current and emerging digital tools to locate, analyze, evaluate, and
use information resources to support research and learning

Lesson Plan
Prep Time:
10 to 30 minutes
Background Knowledge:
Students should be familiar with your school’s iDevice norms.
Students should understand the term probes in relationship to space exploration.
Prior to Lesson:
Copy targets and handouts.
Be sure apps are installed and working on iPods or iPads.
Be sure cameras and Safari are turned on for each device.
Copy handouts.
Set up document camera.
Turn on projector.
Time Needed for Lesson:
About an hour
Lesson:
Introduction:
1. Use the projector to:
Go over I can statements:
I can use an iPod or iPad to view an augmented reality target.
I can cooperate with my partner.
I can answer questions by carefully observing animations.
2. Use document camera to:
Go over directions for finding and using the app:
Touch the Explore button.
Point camera at the target.
View the animation from different angles and distances.
Touch the More button and read the passage.
Answer the questions on the worksheet.
Go over the directions for using the worksheet:
Go over the tips.
Explain how students should circle Who / What has been there?
Explain how students should circle Exists and Doesn’t Exist Yet.
Point out where students should write their responses.
Lindy Kinn – March 2012
4
Organization:
1. Partner students up.
2. One partner gets a worksheet, a pencil, a hard writing surface.
3. One partner gets an iPod or iPad.
Start the Activity
Each set of students moves to a different target and begins completing the task.
Students continue moving through the targets until they have visited all the animations and answered the questions
on their handout.
Extension/Challenge:
!
!
Share the resources with parents so that students can show their parents how it works
Visit The Scale of the Universe 2 interactive website. Help students establish an understanding of their
place in space and define the scope of their study area.
