LEC Update Sep 12

September 12, 2014
Election Results
The results of the election for our council representatives have been announced. Your
elected LEC representatives are:



Captain: Stacy H. Stader
First Officer: Todd E. Lisak
Secretary-Treasurer: David S. (Dave) Razler
The effective date for us to take office as permanent reps will be September 30, 2014.
As your newly elected permanent LEC representatives, we would like to sincerely thank
you for your confidence and support.
Soon you will receive another ballot to elect either your captain rep or first officer rep
as your base chairman or vice chairman. Either rep can hold this position. The rep with
the fewest votes will be the vice chairman.
All of us recognize the great responsibility with which you have entrusted us. To be
clear, we work for you. You will provide us with the direction and focus to lay down the
framework for building a strong and effective association of professional JetBlue pilots.
Fatigue Event Review Committee
Some of you expressed your concerns over the company’s Fatigue Event Review
Committee (FERC). The System Chief Pilot sent an e-mail update on September 5
providing the management’s viewpoint on this committee. We are not satisfied with an
appointed FERC that has no ALPA member present on the board. Since the company
unilaterally created and implemented the FERC with no input from ALPA and has not
invited ALPA participation to this date, we can’t endorse its existence or its decisions
and outcomes.
Although the System Chief Pilot’s e-mail apologizes for not giving the ALPA MEC advance
notice of the changes in the reporting deadline, there is no mention about revising this
deadline or having pilot representation on the committee. Just 24 hours prior to the
SCP’s e-mail, the VP Ops sent pilots an e-mail stating his belief that “communications
and transparency” are important. Think back a few months ago when a Pilot Reliability
Policy was “accidently” distributed with no input from pilot representatives, and despite
being repulsive to most pilots, it was not rescinded or amended. Actions speak louder
than words.
Flight Crew Incident Report Submission Deadline Unilaterally Reduced
In case you missed it, last week Flight Operations leadership unilaterally reduced the
timeline for submission of not volunteering to grant an FDP extension FCIR from 7 days to
48 hours. Here is yet another important matter that has serious repercussions to pilots,
yet was unilaterally changed and implemented by Flight Ops staff. We can only guess at
the true intent of Flight Ops leadership for this change, but we believe that it is
unsatisfactory. We believe that it was intentionally changed in order to prevent pilots
from having adequate time to thoroughly and without stress draft a report and submit it
to their ALPA representatives for legal review, discussion, and rewrite if necessary.
Again, actions speak louder than words. With this timeline, it is important that you
submit your FCIR to us immediately so that we can review it. So far, the Flt Ops
leadership has not given ALPA any indication that they will retract this unrealistic and
punitive deadline.
So what’s the next step for our union?
Your continuing base reps will be voting for the permanent MEC officers at the MEC
meeting on October 17–19 in Hollywood, FL. Those elected or continuing officers will
appoint a committee to draft our JetBlue Policy Manual, which will be the guidelines on
how we run our union. In order to get our committees up and running quickly, your MEC
will draft a resolution on how the committee chairmen will be selected and how those
committees are staffed. Then the real work begins. An in-depth contract study survey
will go out to the pilot group to determine our priorities and goals, and the Negotiating
and supporting committees will then go to work. It will be a very busy year in 2015 for
your union, and we look forward to the current positive bargaining cycle to continue for
some time.
What can you do?
Please stay involved in your union by taking surveys, attending meetings in person, and
reaching out to us as necessary to convey your thoughts and ideas as we work through
the process that will lead us to an industry-leading CBA. Our collective results will be
directly dependent on your continued engagement and feedback. In the coming weeks
and months, we will be reaching out to you for your input.

Questions and Concerns
Please reach out to us with your questions or concerns. We will continue to work with
your chief pilots and Flight Ops staff so that we can consistently provide clarity and
understanding to the issues and questions they have.
